Digestive Health Center

Detox and digestive health, explained in plain language.

68 practical guides, led by a new 25-guide detox series on what your body already does every day and how to judge detox products and routines without extremes. Fiber, cooking, hydration, labels and everyday habits are here too, written to help you make informed choices and prepare useful questions for your health care professional.

Your body's detox team
  • LiverNearly 25% of the blood the heart pumpsChanges compounds so they dissolve in water, and makes bile
  • KidneysAbout 150 quarts filtered a dayFilter blood, send wastes and extra water out as urine, and balance salts and minerals
  • GutAbout 600 milliliters of bile a dayCarries bile and waste out of the body, and acts as a barrier
  • Lungs12 to 20 breaths a minute at restBreathe out carbon dioxide and other gases
  • Lymphatic systemNo central pump, relies partly on movementReturns extra fluid to the blood and carries immune cells

Skin plays a small role: sweat mostly cools you, so it is a minor exit route.

When a symptom needs a clinician, not more fiber

Food changes help many people, but some digestive symptoms belong with a health care professional rather than a grocery list.

Read the full guide: Prunes, kiwifruit and chia: what the studies actually examined

Signs to bring to a clinician

  • Constipation that is new, particularly in later adulthood
  • Blood in the stool
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Persistent abdominal pain
  • Vomiting
  • A family history of colorectal cancer or inflammatory bowel disease
  • Symptoms that began after starting a new medication

If fiber is not helping

If you have tried an adequate amount for several weeks, with enough fluid, and nothing has changed, the answer is not a bigger portion. Non-response is a reason to see a clinician, not a reason to take more.
