Bulk Fenugreek Seed Extract for Supplement Manufacturing

Fenugreek seed extract is a dry powder made from the seeds of Trigonella foenum-graecum L., an annual herb in the legume family (Fabaceae). Bulk grades are usually standardized to 50% total saponins, measured by UV or by weight. We supply it in bulk to supplement brands, contract manufacturers, and formulators.

Botanical name Trigonella foenum-graecum L.
Plant part Seed
Typical grade NLT 50% total saponins (UV)
Pack sizes 5 lb, 11 lb, 25 lb, and 55 lb
Why Fenugreek Seed Extract

A spice seed extract with one widely traded grade

Fenugreek seed extract is simple to compare across suppliers. Most listings quote the same saponin grade, and the seed is a familiar spice with a clear identity. Your quality team mainly needs to pin down the test method behind the number.

Familiar spice seed

Fenugreek seeds are small, hard, and yellow to amber brown. They are a common spice in curry blends, so the raw material moves through established spice supply chains.

One common market grade

Nearly every bulk listing quotes NLT 50% total saponins. That makes quotes easy to line up, as long as the test method matches.

Two ways to measure saponins

Some suppliers read total saponins on a UV spectrophotometer against a reference compound. Others extract and weigh the saponin fraction, called the gravimetric method. Listings often add 'UV' or 'GV' to the grade to show which.

Fine, free flowing powder

Published specs call for 95% passing an 80 mesh screen and a bulk density of 0.40 to 0.60 g/mL. That suits capsule filling, tableting, and dry blending.

Ethanol and water extraction

Standard extracts are made from the seed with ethanol and water, then dried to a brown to yellow brown powder. One published spec names India as the origin.

Distinct aroma and taste

Fenugreek has a strong, sweet aroma often compared to maple, and the extract tastes bitter. Plan taste trials for powders and drink mixes, and expect the aroma to carry into a blend.

Formulation Uses

Where formulators use fenugreek seed extract

This extract fits measured formats where fill weight and serving size are controlled, including:

  • Capsules
  • Compressed tablets
  • Single ingredient powders
  • Multiple ingredient botanical blends
  • Stick packs and sachets
  • Powdered drink mixes, after taste trials
  • Private label programs

Plan fill weights from the confirmed assay on each COA. Fenugreek aroma can carry into other powders in a blend, so check the smell of finished capsules after a few weeks in the bottle.

What Commercial Buyers Should Review

What to check before you buy fenugreek seed extract

Two powders sold as 50% saponins can differ in test method, solvent, and carrier. Review these points together, and ask for lot documents before you approve a supplier.

Species, part, and origin

Confirm Trigonella foenum-graecum L. seed on both the specification and the certificate of analysis (COA). Ask for the country of origin too. Growing regions include India, Egypt, Ethiopia, Morocco, and Turkey.

The method behind 50%

Ask whether total saponins are measured by UV or by the gravimetric method. The two methods can give different numbers for the same lot, so a UV grade and a gravimetric grade are not interchangeable.

Identity by TLC or HPTLC

A TLC or HPTLC fingerprint compared with a reference standard confirms the seed. Some specs also report trigonelline by HPLC, which gives you a second, compound level check.

Solvent, ratio, and carrier

Confirm the extraction solvent and the native extract ratio. Ask whether a carrier, such as maltodextrin, is added to reach the stated grade.

Allergen statement

Fenugreek is a legume, in the same plant family as peanut and soy. Check that the supplier's allergen statement reflects this, and decide with your regulatory team how your label handles it.

Contaminant and micro limits

Check heavy metals by ICP-MS, microbial limits by USP methods, residual ethanol, and pesticide residues. Seeds are a farm crop, so check Salmonella and E. coli results on every lot.

Label math: If your label lists saponins per serving, base the number on each lot's measured assay and your own finished product testing. Keep one method, UV or gravimetric, on your spec, the COA, and your release tests.

Specification

Typical specification for fenugreek seed extract

These values reflect the common 50% saponins grade. Final figures come from the specification sheet and COA for your lot. NLT means not less than, and NMT means not more than.

Storage & Handling

Storage and handling for bulk fenugreek extract

Seed extracts keep best when they stay sealed, dry, and out of light. These steps keep the powder in good condition between production runs.

Keep it sealed

Close the inner liner after each use and press out the air. Extract powders pick up moisture from the air and can cake when left open.

Store cool and dry

Keep bags off the floor in a dry room, away from heat and light. Follow the temperature range on the spec sheet.

Keep strong aromas apart

Fenugreek aroma travels. Store it away from flavor sensitive ingredients, and clean shared scoops and blenders before the next run.

Rotate stock

Record the lot number and retest date for each bag. Send older lots to production first.

Buyer FAQ

Fenugreek seed extract buyer FAQ

Quick answers to the questions procurement and quality teams ask most.

What is fenugreek seed extract standardized to?

Most bulk fenugreek seed extract is standardized to NLT 50% total saponins. The figure is measured either by UV or by the gravimetric (weighing) method. Check which method your label and finished product spec rely on.

What does UV or GV mean after the grade?

They name the test method behind the saponin figure. UV means a spectrophotometer reading against a reference compound, and GV means the saponin fraction was extracted and weighed. Results from the two methods are not interchangeable, so compare quotes on the same method.

Is fenugreek extract the same as fenugreek seed powder?

No. Seed powder is whole seed that has been cleaned, dried, and milled. Extract is made by soaking the seed in ethanol and water and drying the liquid into a concentrated powder with a stated assay. Extract is the usual choice when a label needs a standardized amount.

Is fenugreek an allergen?

Fenugreek is not one of the nine major food allergens named in US law. It is a legume, though, and published allergy reports describe cross reactions with peanut. Ask for the allergen statement and decide with your regulatory team how your label handles it.

Is this the same as a branded fenugreek extract?

No. Branded fenugreek extracts are proprietary products sold under their owners' trademarks and specifications. This is a generic seed extract, sold on its own specification and COA.

What documents can I get with an order?

A certificate of analysis (COA) and a specification sheet ship with every order. An allergen statement and a safety data sheet may also be available, depending on the lot in inventory. Contact us to request them.

Can I get a sample before a bulk order?

You can request one by choosing sample options on the quote form. We will confirm availability, size, and timing.

How should I store an opened bag?

Close the liner, press out the air, and keep the bag in a cool, dry place away from light and strong odors. Use the powder within the shelf life shown on the COA.
