Bulk L-Carnosine Powder for Supplement Manufacturing

L-carnosine is a white crystalline powder made of beta-alanyl-L-histidine, a dipeptide built from the amino acids beta-alanine and L-histidine. It is assayed by HPLC and sold at about 98 to 99.5% purity. We supply it in bulk to supplement brands, contract manufacturers, and formulators. You can request testing documents and samples on the quote form.

Chemical name L-carnosine (beta-alanyl-L-histidine)
CAS number 305-84-0
Assay NLT 99.0% (HPLC)
Pack sizes 5 lb, 11 lb, 25 lb, and 55 lb
Why L-Carnosine

One dipeptide with clear purity and identity tests

L-carnosine is a single molecule with a published CAS number and a positive optical rotation. HPLC methods cover both the main compound and its two amino acids. That makes lot to lot comparison simple for buyers and quality teams.

Defined composition

L-carnosine is C9H14N4O3, with a molecular weight of 226.23. It joins one beta-alanine unit to one L-histidine unit through a peptide bond.

High purity grades

Market grades run from about 98% for food use to 99.5% for pharmaceutical use. Common supplement COAs set NLT 99.0% by HPLC.

Component amino acids you can measure

Good certificates of analysis (COAs) report free L-histidine and beta-alanine by HPLC. Published limits are NMT 1.0% for L-histidine and NMT 0.1% for beta-alanine.

L-form you can verify

Specific rotation on the COA confirms the L-histidine part of the molecule. Published specs set it at about +20° to +22°.

White, odorless, water soluble

Most lots are white, odorless powders that dissolve in water but not in methanol. A 2% solution has a pH of about 7.5 to 8.5.

Process residues on the COA

Supplement grade COAs list a hydrazine result, with a published limit of NMT 2 ppm. That line records a process residue result for that lot.

Formulation Uses

Where formulators use L-carnosine

This powder fits measured formats where fill weight and serving size are controlled, including:

  • Capsules
  • Compressed tablets
  • Single ingredient powders
  • Multiple ingredient powder blends
  • Sports nutrition powders
  • Powdered drink mixes
  • Stick packs and sachets
  • Private label programs

Plan fill weights from the assay on each COA. L-carnosine costs far more per kilogram than most amino acids. Small changes in assay and loss on drying move your cost per finished serving.

What Commercial Buyers Should Review

What to check before you buy L-carnosine

Powders sold as carnosine can differ in grade, purity, and documentation. Review these points together, and ask for lot documents before you approve a supplier.

Exact compound

Confirm L-carnosine, CAS 305-84-0, on both the specification and the COA. Zinc L-carnosine, N-acetyl-carnosine, and beta-alanine are separate ingredients with their own specs.

Identity and specific rotation

Look for HPLC or infrared identity against a reference standard. Check that the specific rotation falls at about +20° to +22°.

Related substances

Ask for free L-histidine and beta-alanine results by HPLC. Both show how complete the reaction and purification were.

Hydrazine and solvents

Ask for a hydrazine result on every lot and residual solvent results against USP <467>. Some published COAs name process solvents but report no result for them.

Grade and documents

Laboratory, food, and pharmaceutical grades come with different documents. Confirm the grade, the producing plant, and whether the COA is the maker's original or a distributor's summary.

Contaminant limits

Check heavy metals by ICP-MS and microbial limits by USP methods. Published lead limits for supplement grades run as low as NMT 2 ppm.

Label math: L-carnosine is not a salt, so 1,000 mg of a 99% lot supplies about 990 mg of L-carnosine. If you compare it with beta-alanine or zinc L-carnosine, compare the compound named on the label, not the gram weight of each powder.

Specification

Typical specification for L-carnosine

These values reflect a published supplement grade COA. Final figures come from the specification sheet and COA for your lot. NLT means not less than, and NMT means not more than.

Storage & Handling

Storage and handling for bulk L-carnosine

L-carnosine keeps best sealed, dry, cool, and out of light. Some producers store it refrigerated, so follow the temperature on the spec sheet for your lot.

Keep it sealed

Close the inner liner after each use and press out the air. Published specs cap loss on drying at 1.0%, so keep moisture out of open bags.

Follow the sheet's temperature

Some spec sheets call for 2 to 8°C (36 to 46°F). Others allow a cool, dry room. Store each lot as its own sheet directs.

Keep away from light

Leave the powder in its original opaque packaging, away from light and incompatible materials. Note color and odor on arrival so you can spot any change.

Rotate stock

Record the lot number and retest date for each bag. Send older lots to production first.

Buyer FAQ

L-carnosine buyer FAQ

Quick answers to the questions procurement and quality teams ask most.

What is L-carnosine made of?

L-carnosine is a dipeptide of beta-alanine and L-histidine, joined by a peptide bond. Its CAS number is 305-84-0, and its molecular weight is 226.23.

Is L-carnosine the same as beta-alanine?

No. Beta-alanine is a single amino acid, while L-carnosine is beta-alanine joined to L-histidine. The two have different CAS numbers, assays, and prices, and they are not interchangeable on a label.

Is L-carnosine the same as zinc L-carnosine?

No. Zinc L-carnosine is a chelate of zinc and L-carnosine, a separate ingredient with its own specifications and trade names. Order each by its exact name and CAS number.

What purity grades are available?

Most suppliers offer about 98% to 99.5% by HPLC. Supplement COAs commonly set NLT 99.0%, and pharmaceutical grades reach 99.5%.

Why does the COA list hydrazine?

Hydrazine can be used in some synthesis routes for L-carnosine, so good COAs test each lot for traces of it. Published supplement grade specs set it at NMT 2 ppm.

What documents can I get with an order?

A certificate of analysis (COA) and a specification sheet ship with every order. An allergen statement and a safety data sheet may also be available, depending on the lot in inventory. Contact us to request them.

Can I get a sample before a bulk order?

You can request one by choosing sample options on the quote form. We will confirm availability, size, and timing.

How should I store an opened bag?

Close the liner, press out the air, and keep the bag cool, dry, and away from light. Use the powder within the shelf life shown on the COA.
