What one standard drink actually looks like
The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism lists several beverages that each deliver that same 0.6 fluid ounces of pure alcohol:
- Regular beer, 12 fluid ounces at about 5 percent alcohol by volume.
- Malt liquor or hard seltzer, 8 to 10 fluid ounces at about 7 percent.
- Table wine, 5 fluid ounces at about 12 percent.
- Fortified wine such as sherry or port, 3 to 4 fluid ounces at about 17 percent.
- Cordials, liqueurs, and aperitifs, 2 to 3 fluid ounces at about 24 percent.
- Distilled spirits or brandy, 1.5 fluid ounces at about 40 percent.
Notice how far the volumes spread out, from 1.5 ounces to 12. The stronger the beverage, the less of it makes a drink. The institute also cautions that the alcohol percentage varies within a beverage type as well as across types. Two beers labeled the same style can sit several percentage points apart.
The only arithmetic you need
Because a standard drink is a fixed quantity of alcohol, you can calculate one from any container. Multiply the fluid ounces by the alcohol percentage, then divide by 60.
Check it against the official equivalents and the arithmetic lands on 1 every time. Beer: 12 times 5 is 60, divided by 60 is 1. Wine: 5 times 12 is 60, divided by 60 is 1. Spirits: 1.5 times 40 is 60, divided by 60 is 1. The formula works because 0.6 fluid ounces of pure alcohol is 1 percent of 60 ounces.
Now run it on the things people actually drink.
- A 16 ounce pint of a 7 percent beer. 16 times 7 is 112, divided by 60 is 1.9. Nearly two standard drinks in one glass.
- A 9 ounce pour of a 13 percent red wine, which is a normal restaurant style pour in a large bowl glass. 9 times 13 is 117, divided by 60 is about 2. Again, nearly two.
- A 750 milliliter bottle of table wine, which holds about 25 fluid ounces. At 12 percent that bottle is about 5 standard drinks. At 14 percent, which is common in warmer climate reds, it is closer to 6.
- A mixed drink made with a free pour of 3 ounces of 40 percent spirits. That is exactly 2 standard drinks before the mixer goes in.
- A 12 ounce can of hard seltzer at 5 percent is 1 standard drink. The same can at 8 percent is 1.6.
The number you need for this calculation is printed on most beer, wine, and spirits containers as alcohol by volume, often shortened to ABV. It is usually in small type near the bottom of the label. Once you know where it is, the rest takes ten seconds.
Why the gap changes what you tell a clinician
Suppose you drink two glasses of wine most evenings, poured at 9 ounces from a 13 percent bottle. You would describe that as two drinks. By the standard drink definition it is closer to four, and four a day is a different conversation.
This is not about catching anyone out. It matters because the research that health care professionals rely on is counted in standard drinks. A 2017 systematic review and meta analysis in Lancet Public Health pooled 36 trials with 2,865 participants and looked at what happened to blood pressure when people cut back. Among those drinking two or fewer drinks a day, reducing intake was not associated with a significant blood pressure reduction. Among those drinking more than two a day, it was, and the effect grew with the starting amount. The largest reductions, about 5.5 mm Hg systolic, were in people drinking six or more a day who cut their intake roughly in half.
Read that carefully, because it cuts both ways. Someone who is genuinely at one standard drink a day should not expect cutting back to move their readings. Someone who believes they are at two but is actually at four sits in the part of the evidence where reducing intake was associated with a measurable difference. The 2025 American Heart Association and American College of Cardiology high blood pressure guideline estimates that reducing alcohol is associated with roughly 4 to 6 mm Hg lower systolic pressure, and that estimate is an average across people who were drinking enough for a change to register.
Counting also puts the common definitions in reach. The alcohol institute defines binge drinking as the pattern that brings blood alcohol to 0.08 percent, which it describes as about five or more drinks for men or four or more for women in roughly two hours. Two generous pours and a top up at a dinner party can reach that without anyone deciding to.
Pour once, then you will always know
Here is the trick that costs nothing and takes two minutes.
- Fill a kitchen measuring cup with 5 fluid ounces of water. Pour it into the wine glass you normally use. Look at where it comes to. Most people are surprised by how low the line sits.
- Do the same with 1.5 fluid ounces into the tumbler you use for spirits. Take a photo if the shape makes it hard to remember.
- If you drink from a pint glass, measure 12 fluid ounces into it. American pint glasses usually hold 16.
- Measure your coffee mug too, while the measuring cup is out. A recipe cup is 8 fluid ounces. Many mugs hold considerably more.
You do not need to measure again. You are calibrating your eye once, against your own glassware, so that every later estimate is closer to true.
When someone else is pouring, arithmetic still helps. A 750 milliliter bottle holds about 25 ounces, so a bottle shared by four people is roughly 6 ounces each, which at 13 percent is about 1.3 standard drinks per person per bottle. If a table goes through two bottles, each person has had something near two and a half standard drinks.
Caffeine is quoted per 12 ounces, and cups are not
The Food and Drug Administration's consumer page on caffeine gives its figures per 12 fluid ounces. Those numbers are worth knowing exactly, because most caffeine tables published elsewhere use 8 ounce servings and the two sets are not interchangeable.
- Regular brewed coffee, not specialty coffee: 113 to 247 milligrams per 12 fluid ounces.
- Black tea: 71 mg per 12 fluid ounces.
- Green tea: 37 mg per 12 fluid ounces.
- Caffeinated soft drinks: 23 to 83 mg per 12 fluid ounces.
- Energy drinks: 41 to 246 mg per 12 fluid ounces, which the agency also states as 54 to 328 mg per 16 fluid ounces.
- Decaffeinated coffee: 2 to 15 mg per 8 fluid ounces.
Scale those to the cups people buy. A 16 ounce coffee is one and a third times the FDA serving, so roughly 150 to 330 mg. A 20 ounce is one and two thirds, so roughly 190 to 410 mg. One large cup of ordinary brewed coffee can therefore deliver more caffeine than some people get from an entire day of what they think of as moderate intake.
The width of that range deserves as much attention as the size of the cup. FDA's own figure for a single 12 ounce serving spans more than twofold, and the agency notes that caffeine amounts and container sizes both vary between products. Brew strength, bean, and method move the number as much as volume does. Two 12 ounce cups from different kitchens are not the same exposure.
Two caffeine limits, answering two different questions
You will see two numbers quoted, and they are not in conflict.
FDA describes 400 mg a day, which it puts at about two to three 12 fluid ounce cups of coffee, as an amount not generally associated with negative effects for most adults. That is a general population figure about caffeine's overall effects.
The 2025 American Heart Association and American College of Cardiology guideline lists caffeine among the substances that can raise blood pressure and points to keeping intake under 300 mg a day. That is a narrower question asked about one outcome, in people whose blood pressure is the reason for the conversation.
Hold those two figures against the arithmetic above and In practice, clear. A single 20 ounce cup of ordinary brewed coffee can land anywhere from well under to well over the guideline figure, depending entirely on how it was made. You cannot resolve that by counting cups. You can only narrow it by knowing your usual size and your usual source.
Separately, caffeine also affects a single reading rather than just long term pressure. A large 2017 systematic review of measurement error found acute caffeine raised systolic readings by about 3 to 14 mm Hg, which is why the standard measurement checklist calls for no caffeine in the 30 minutes before a reading. What the label serving tells you, and what it does not
The serving size printed on a Nutrition Facts label is not a recommendation. FDA states that serving sizes must be based on the amount people typically consume, not on how much they should consume. It is a description of ordinary behavior, chosen so that labels can be compared with each other.
Two habits close the gap between the label and the container. First, read the servings per container line before the calories. A 20 ounce soda bottle holds about one and two thirds of a 12 ounce serving, and a 2 liter bottle holds about 67 ounces, which is more than five. Second, look for the two column labels some packages carry, which show the numbers for one serving beside the numbers for the whole package. When only one column is printed, the multiplication is yours to do.
Beer, wine, and spirits mostly do not give you a caffeine style table to work from, which is why alcohol by volume is the figure to find. Between the volume on the front and the percentage in the fine print, every container tells you what it holds.
Making the count useful
Counting is only worth doing if it reaches the person who can use it. For a week, write down the drink, the size in fluid ounces, and either the alcohol percentage or the caffeine source, plus the time of day. Then bring the actual numbers rather than an adjective.
An adjective like social, moderate, or a couple means something different to every person who says it and every person who hears it. Twelve standard drinks last week, mostly Friday and Saturday, is information a health care professional can work with. So is three 16 ounce coffees before noon.
Those counts also let you use published guidance on your own terms. The American Heart Association, on a page last reviewed in September 2025, says adults who drink should limit intake to no more than one to two drinks a day for men and no more than one a day for women, and says plainly that if you do not drink alcohol, you should not start. The alcohol institute notes that harm may come with any amount of drinking and increases as the amount increases. The 2025 to 2030 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, released in January 2026, states the direction rather than a number: consume less alcohol for better overall health. None of those statements can be applied to your life until you know what a drink means in your own glass.
Start with the measuring cup. Five ounces of water in the glass you use tonight will tell you more about your actual intake than any chart.
