Bulk Tongkat Ali Root Extract for Supplement Manufacturing
Tongkat ali extract is a dry powder made from the root of Eurycoma longifolia Jack, a tree in the quassia family from Southeast Asia. Most specifications name eurycomanone, a quassinoid measured by HPLC, as the marker compound. We supply it in bulk to supplement brands, contract manufacturers, and formulators. You can request testing documents and samples on the quote form.
A root extract you can specify by eurycomanone
Tongkat ali extract has a named marker compound and a national standard in Malaysia. HPLC methods can also tell it apart from a related species. That makes lot to lot comparison practical for buyers and quality teams.
Eurycomanone as the marker
Eurycomanone is the main quassinoid in tongkat ali root. Specifications state a minimum percentage by HPLC, and published grades run from about 1% to 3%, with some higher grades sold.
Ratios need an assay
Many listings sell 100:1 or 200:1 extracts. A ratio describes the process, while an HPLC assay measures the marker in your lot, so ask for both figures.
A national standard
Malaysian Standard MS 2409:2011 covers freeze dried water extract of tongkat ali roots. Some branded extracts state that they meet it, which gives buyers a reference specification.
Water extracts
The Malaysian standard covers water extracts. Branded water extracts also report protein, polysaccharide, and glycosaponin figures next to eurycomanone.
Species identity by HPLC
A related species, Eurycoma harmandiana, carries chaparrinone as its main quassinoid. An HPLC profile led by eurycomanone points to E. longifolia.
Southeast Asian origin
Tongkat ali is native to Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand. Ask for the country of harvest and whether the roots were wild collected or cultivated.
Where formulators use tongkat ali extract
This extract fits measured formats where fill weight is controlled, including:
- Capsules
- Compressed tablets
- Single ingredient powders
- Multiple ingredient botanical blends
- Stick packs and sachets
- Powdered drink mixes, after taste trials
- Private label programs
Plan fill weights from the confirmed eurycomanone result on each COA. A 1% extract and a 2% extract are not interchangeable gram for gram. A ratio grade alone gives you no basis for that math.
What to check before you buy tongkat ali extract
Two powders sold as tongkat ali extract can differ in species, plant part, marker content, and carrier. Review these points together, and ask for lot documents before you approve a supplier.
Species and plant part
Confirm Eurycoma longifolia root on both the specification and the certificate of analysis (COA). Ask the supplier to state that no stem, leaf, or other aerial parts are included.
Eurycomanone by HPLC
Ask for the eurycomanone percentage by HPLC against a reference standard, with the chromatogram. A ratio such as 100:1 on its own does not tell you the marker content.
Identity fingerprint
An HPLC or HPTLC fingerprint against reference standards confirms the species. The quassinoid pattern also separates E. longifolia from E. harmandiana.
Solvent and carrier
Ask whether the extract is made with water or ethanol, and whether a carrier such as maltodextrin is added. Get the full composition in percent.
Lead and other metals
Root extracts can carry lead and other metals from soil. Check lead, mercury, arsenic, and cadmium by ICP-MS on every lot, and compare the results with your own finished product specification.
Origin and standard
Ask for the country of harvest and whether the extract is made to MS 2409:2011. Malaysian origin with an MS 2409 statement gives you a documented reference point.
Label math: If your label lists eurycomanone per serving, base it on each lot's measured HPLC result and your own finished product testing. A stated grade is a minimum, so the COA value is the figure to work from.
Typical specification for tongkat ali root extract

Quality standards for tongkat ali extract
The main published standard for tongkat ali is Malaysian Standard MS 2409. It defines a dried water extract of the root by four composition figures, with eurycomanone as the marker.
MS 2409 composition ranges
MS 2409:2011 covers the dried water extract of tongkat ali root. It sets eurycomanone at 0.8 to 1.5% and total protein at 22 to 45%. Polysaccharides must read 30 to 55%, and glycosaponins 40 to 65%. A lot outside any of these ranges does not match the standard, even if its eurycomanone looks right.
Methods behind the numbers
One branded water extract measures eurycomanone by HPLC with diode array detection and protein by the Lowry method. It measures polysaccharides by UV and glycosaponins by gravimetry. Ask your supplier to name the method for each figure, since results by different methods do not compare directly.
A validated HPLC method
A published RP-HPLC method uses a C18 column at 40 °C and an acetonitrile and 0.1% formic acid gradient. Detection is by UV at 254 nm, and eurycomanone elutes near 5.6 minutes. The limit of quantitation is 0.887 µg/mL. Ask for the chromatogram and the reference standard lot with each COA.
Identity, root, and stem
HPTLC fingerprints with sulfuric acid or anisaldehyde reagents show clear differences between root and stem. One validated method detects adulterant material from 5% w/w. Near infrared screening could not reliably separate root from stem in the same work. DNA methods suit raw root chips better than a refined water extract.
Contaminant limits to build on
USP <2232> sets component limits of 0.5 µg/g for lead and cadmium and 1.5 µg/g for inorganic arsenic and total mercury. Malaysia caps mercury at 0.5 ppm for registered traditional products. One branded water extract specifies lead under 2.0 ppm, mercury under 0.05 ppm, and cadmium under 0.3 ppm. Its published batch results read under 0.10 mg/kg for lead.
Sourcing and processing practices for tongkat ali extract
Eurycomanone content traces back to where the root grew and how it was extracted. These practices give QA teams specific points to ask about and verify.
Qualify the growing area
Water extracts of roots from five Malaysian states differed more than threefold in eurycomanone by HPLC. Selangor material read 3.28% and Kelantan material 0.89%. Ask for the state or province of harvest, and set your assay range from several lots, not one.
Know the water extraction
One branded process extracts dried root chips in hot purified water. The extract is filtered, concentrated by evaporation, sterilized, dried, and milled, with no carriers added. In lab work, a 15:1 water to root ratio with three 4-hour reflux cycles gave the most eurycomanone. Ask for the water ratio, extraction time, and drying method for your grade.
Read a ratio as a process note
Some sheets list a ratio such as 200:1 as the assay, with TLC as the method. TLC confirms identity but does not measure a ratio. Ask for an HPLC eurycomanone figure on every COA in its place.
Ask for real time stability data
One branded extract ran stability at 30 °C and 75% relative humidity for up to 36 months, plus 6 months at 40 °C. Those data backed a 24-month shelf life, stored below 30 °C and 60% relative humidity. Ask for data at conditions like yours before you accept a longer date.
Document wild collection
Many branded water extracts start from wild collected roots. One maker identifies source plants by DNA fingerprinting (PCR-RAPD) and replants seedlings. Ask how the supplier records collection sites and confirms the species before extraction.
Formulator tips for tongkat ali extract
Use these points when you set label amounts, fill weights, and incoming tests. Most figures below come from MS 2409, published supplier sheets, and validated methods.
- Do not swap solvents or grades gram for gram. In one method paper, an ethanol extract of the same root read above the MS 2409 eurycomanone range, while the water extract fell inside it. Give each solvent and grade its own specification.
- Expect some sediment in water. Lab work found a branded water extract only partly soluble, with a sediment left behind. Run dispersion trials before you commit to a clear drink or a liquid.
- Plan for a bitter taste. Specifications describe the powder as bitter, so capsules and tablets are the easiest formats. In stick packs, run taste trials with your flavor system.
- Weigh and blend in a low humidity room and keep open time short. Water extracts pick up moisture and cake quickly.
- Set an incoming test plan. Run HPLC eurycomanone and an HPTLC fingerprint against a root reference on every lot. Add the four MS 2409 figures, metals by ICP-MS, and microbial counts for each new supplier. Recheck eurycomanone and loss on drying (NMT 8.0%) at retest.
Helping shoppers read a tongkat ali label
Brands and their customer service teams field the same label questions again and again. These answers stick to what the ingredient is and how it is labeled.
What the label line means
A typical line reads tongkat ali root extract (Eurycoma longifolia), standardized to 1% eurycomanone. Long Jack and pasak bumi are other common names for the same plant. The plant part should read root.
How to read the percentage
Multiply the extract amount by the percentage. 150 mg at 2% gives 3 mg of eurycomanone. A ratio such as 100:1 describes processing, not content, so look for a percentage.
Independent quality programs
Programs such as the USP Dietary Supplement Verification Program and NSF/ANSI 173 certification check finished products against their labels and contaminant limits. Some labels also state that the extract meets Malaysian Standard MS 2409.
Normal look, taste, and home storage
The powder is light brown to brown and tastes bitter. Keep the bottle tightly closed in a cool, dry place below 30 °C, since water extracts pick up moisture.
Storage and handling for bulk tongkat ali extract
Water extracts pick up moisture quickly, so keep them sealed and dry. These steps keep the powder in good condition between production runs.
Keep it sealed
Close the inner liner after each use and press out the air. Water extracts pick up moisture from the air and can cake or harden when left open.
Store cool and dry
Keep bags off the floor in a dry room, away from heat sources. Follow the temperature range on the spec sheet.
Keep away from light
Leave the powder in its original opaque packaging. Light and heat can shift color and assay over time.
Rotate stock
Record the lot number and retest date for each bag. Send older lots to production first.
Tongkat ali extract buyer FAQ
Quick answers to the questions procurement and quality teams ask most.
What is tongkat ali extract standardized to?
Tongkat ali extract is standardized to eurycomanone, measured by HPLC. Some water extracts also state minimums for protein, polysaccharides, and glycosaponin.
Is a 100:1 extract more concentrated than a 1% eurycomanone extract?
Not necessarily. A ratio tells you how much root went into each kilogram of extract. Only an HPLC assay tells you the eurycomanone content, so ask for that figure whatever ratio is quoted.
How do you confirm tongkat ali identity?
Tongkat ali identity is confirmed with an HPLC or HPTLC fingerprint against reference standards. The profile should be led by eurycomanone, which separates Eurycoma longifolia from the related E. harmandiana.
What is MS 2409?
MS 2409:2011 is the Malaysian Standard for freeze dried water extract of tongkat ali roots. It sets commercial quality requirements for that extract type, and an amendment followed in 2014. Ask whether your lot is made to it.
Where does tongkat ali come from?
Tongkat ali grows in Southeast Asia, mainly Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand. Ask for the country of harvest and the extraction site, since they can differ. The country of manufacture for each lot is provided with your quote.
How can I confirm a tongkat ali extract is root only?
Ask for an HPTLC fingerprint against an authenticated root reference. Validated methods show clear root and stem differences and detect other plant material from about 5% w/w. Pair it with an HPLC eurycomanone result.
How much extract do I need for a 2.5 mg eurycomanone label amount?
You need 250 mg of a 1.0% extract, or 125 mg of a 2.0% extract, before any overage. Divide the label amount by the assay: 2.5 mg divided by 0.01 equals 250 mg. Use the HPLC value from each lot's COA.
What documents can I get with an order?
A certificate of analysis (COA) and a specification sheet ship with every order. An allergen statement and a safety data sheet may also be available, depending on the lot in inventory. Contact us to request them.
