Bulk Taurine Powder for Supplement Manufacturing

Taurine is a white crystalline powder made by chemical synthesis, commonly from ethylene oxide and sodium bisulfite by way of isethionic acid. Chemically it is 2-aminoethanesulfonic acid, an amino acid with a sulfonic acid group in place of the usual carboxylic acid group. Supplement grades are sold against pharmacopoeia standards such as the Japanese Pharmacopoeia (JP), with purity measured by HPLC. We supply it in bulk to supplement brands, contract manufacturers, and formulators. You can request testing documents and samples on the quote form.

Chemical name Taurine, 2-aminoethanesulfonic acid (CAS 107-35-7)
Source Chemical synthesis, isethionic acid route
Typical grade NLT 98.0% (HPLC), JP grade
Pack sizes 5 lb, 11 lb, 25 lb, and 55 lb
Why Taurine

A stable, water soluble compound for drink mixes and capsules

Taurine is simple to specify. It has one form, pharmacopoeia test methods, and a long industrial production record. That makes lot comparison simple for buyers and quality teams.

One form only

Taurine has no chiral center, so there is no L or D form to specify. Its formula is C2H7NO3S, with a molecular weight of about 125.

A sulfonic amino acid

Taurine carries a sulfonic acid group instead of a carboxylic acid group. Identity is confirmed against a taurine reference standard, for example by HPLC retention time.

Pharmacopoeia grades

Supplement grade taurine is often sold against the Japanese Pharmacopoeia. Typical limits include NLT 98% assay, chloride NMT 0.011%, sulfate NMT 0.010%, and ammonium NMT 0.02%.

Made by synthesis

Commercial taurine is a manufactured compound. The usual route turns ethylene oxide and sodium bisulfite into isethionic acid, then converts it to taurine with ammonia.

Dense crystalline powder

Taurine is a white, odorless crystalline powder. Bulk density on published spec sheets is about 0.7 to 0.8 g/mL, which suits capsule filling and dry blending.

Clear solutions

Taurine dissolves in water to give a clear, colorless solution, and grade specifications include a clarity test. A test solution reads pH 4.1 to 5.6 on JP grade specs.

Formulation Uses

Where formulators use taurine

Taurine fits measured formats where the serving size is controlled, including:

  • Powdered drink mixes
  • Functional beverages
  • Single ingredient powders
  • Capsules
  • Compressed tablets
  • Stick packs and sachets
  • Multiple ingredient amino acid blends
  • Gummies, after taste trials
  • Private label programs

Plan taurine per serving from the confirmed assay on each COA. If your supplier adds a flow agent such as silicon dioxide, account for it in both your assay math and your ingredient list.

What Commercial Buyers Should Review

What to check before you buy taurine

Taurine is one compound, but lots differ in grade, flow agents, impurity limits, and documentation. Review these points together, and ask for lot documents before you approve a supplier.

Grade and standard

Confirm whether the lot meets JP, USP, or another standard, and which edition. The COA should show assay, chloride, sulfate, ammonium, and related substances against those limits.

Assay and identity by HPLC

Ask for the HPLC assay and identity by retention time against a reference standard. One published supplier COA showed 99.21% against an NLT 98% limit.

Flow agents

Ask whether the powder contains silicon dioxide or another flow agent. Some bulk taurine sold online includes one, while other lots are sold with none.

Route and origin

Ask for the production route and the country of manufacture on the COA. Both shape your supplier file and the residue tests your specification should cover.

Heavy metals and iron

Check lead, arsenic, and iron limits and lot results. One published JP grade COA set lead at NMT 0.5 ppm and iron at NMT 10 ppm.

Nutrition data sheet

A single compound powder should list taurine and little else. If a supplier's nutrition sheet shows protein, fat, or fiber, ask for a corrected sheet before you build your label.

Label math: Taurine is sold as the free compound, so 1 g of powder at 99% assay supplies about 0.99 g of taurine. Base your label numbers on each lot's measured assay and your own finished product testing.

Specification

Typical specification for taurine

These values reflect a common JP grade specification for taurine. Final figures come from the specification sheet and COA for your lot. NLT means not less than, and NMT means not more than.

Storage & Handling

Storage and handling for bulk taurine

Taurine is a stable dry powder when it stays sealed, cool, and dark. These steps keep the powder in good condition between production runs.

Keep it sealed

Close the inner liner after each use and press out the air. Crystalline powders pick up moisture from humid air and can cake when left open.

Store cool and dry

Keep bags off the floor in a dry room. Published spec sheets call for storage below 25 °C.

Keep away from light

Store bags in a dark place in their original packaging. Follow the conditions on your spec sheet.

Rotate stock

Record the lot number and retest date for each bag. Send older lots to production first.

Buyer FAQ

Taurine buyer FAQ

Quick answers to the questions procurement and quality teams ask most.

Is taurine an amino acid?

Yes, in the chemical sense. Taurine is 2-aminoethanesulfonic acid, an amino acid with a sulfonic acid group instead of a carboxylic acid group. It has no L or D form, so listings that say 'L-taurine' describe the same compound.

How is taurine made?

Commercial taurine is made by chemical synthesis. The common industrial route reacts ethylene oxide with sodium bisulfite to make isethionic acid, then converts it to taurine with ammonia.

Is supplement taurine made from animals?

No. Commercial taurine comes from chemical synthesis using industrial inputs, not from animal tissue.

Which grade of taurine should I choose?

Choose the grade your finished product specification cites. JP grade taurine is commonly offered and sets NLT 98% assay, with limits for chloride, sulfate, ammonium, and related substances.

Does bulk taurine contain a flow agent?

Some does. Ask whether silicon dioxide or another flow agent is present, and get it in writing on the specification.

What documents can I get with an order?

A certificate of analysis (COA) and a specification sheet ship with every order. An allergen statement and a safety data sheet may also be available, depending on the lot in inventory. Contact us to request them.

Can I get a sample before a bulk order?

You can request one by choosing sample options on the quote form. We will confirm availability, size, and timing.

How should I store an opened bag?

Close the liner, press out the air, and keep the bag in a cool, dry, dark place. Use the powder within the shelf life shown on the COA.
