Bulk Tart Cherry Extract Powder for Supplement Manufacturing

Tart cherry extract powder is a dry powder made from the fruit of the sour cherry, Prunus cerasus L., often the Montmorency variety. Grades are sold by extract ratio or by anthocyanin content, measured by HPLC or a pH differential method. We supply it in bulk to supplement brands, contract manufacturers, and formulators. You can request testing documents and samples on the quote form.

Botanical name Prunus cerasus L.
Plant part Fruit
Typical grade 4:1 extract, anthocyanins stated with method
Pack sizes 5 lb, 11 lb, 25 lb, and 55 lb
Why Tart Cherry Extract

A fruit powder you can specify by form, variety, and anthocyanins

Tart cherry powder comes in several forms, and each one reads differently on a spec sheet. Once the form, variety, and anthocyanin method are fixed for each lot, buyers and quality teams can compare lots directly.

Three forms under one name

Juice powder is spray dried juice, usually on a carrier such as maltodextrin. Whole fruit powder is dried, milled fruit. Extract is concentrated by ratio, such as 4:1 or 10:1, or graded by anthocyanin content.

Named varieties

Montmorency is the most common tart cherry variety in the US trade. Balaton is a darker variety with a higher anthocyanin content, so ask which one your lot uses.

A clear anthocyanin profile

The main tart cherry anthocyanins are cyanidin-3-glucosylrutinoside and cyanidin-3-rutinoside. Bilberry, cranberry, and elderberry carry a different set, so an HPLC profile works as a fingerprint for the fruit.

Two ways to measure anthocyanins

The pH differential method (AOAC 2005.02) reads total monomeric anthocyanins as one number. HPLC separates and measures each anthocyanin. The two methods give different figures for the same powder.

Color and taste you can plan for

The powder ranges from deep red to purple. It gives water a red color and a sour fruit taste, which suits drink mixes and gummies after trials.

Water dispersible powder

Juice powders and most extracts dissolve or disperse readily in water. Whole fruit powder keeps its fiber, so it leaves a cloudy suspension in drinks.

Formulation Uses

Where formulators use tart cherry extract

This powder fits measured formats where fill weight and serving size are controlled, including:

  • Capsules
  • Compressed tablets, after flow trials
  • Single ingredient powders
  • Powdered drink mixes
  • Functional beverages, after color and taste trials
  • Stick packs and sachets
  • Gummies, after taste and stability trials
  • Multiple ingredient fruit and berry blends
  • Private label programs

Plan fill weights from the confirmed assay on each COA. A juice powder on a carrier, a whole fruit powder, and a 4:1 extract are not interchangeable gram for gram. Recalculate your serving math whenever you change form or grade.

What Commercial Buyers Should Review

What to check before you buy tart cherry extract

Two powders sold as tart cherry can differ in form, carrier, variety, and assay method. Review these points together, and ask for lot documents before you approve a supplier.

Species, part, and variety

Confirm Prunus cerasus L. fruit on both the specification and the certificate of analysis (COA). Ask which variety was used, such as Montmorency or Balaton.

Form and carrier

Ask whether the powder is juice powder, whole fruit powder, or extract. If a carrier such as maltodextrin or dextrin is added, get its percentage and its plant source for your allergen file.

Anthocyanin method and basis

Ask whether anthocyanins are measured by HPLC or by the pH differential method, and on a dry or as is basis. A total polyphenol result by Folin-Ciocalteu is a different measure again.

Identity by HPLC profile

Ask for an HPLC anthocyanin profile compared with a tart cherry reference. Cyanidin-3-glucosylrutinoside should be one of the main peaks.

Country where the fruit grew

Tart cherries are grown in the US, Turkey, Poland, and other countries. Ask for the country where the fruit was harvested as well as where it was dried and packed.

Contaminant limits

Check heavy metals by ICP-MS, microbial limits by USP methods, and pesticide residues. Compare each limit with your own finished product specification.

Label math: If your label states anthocyanins or fruit equivalent per serving, start from each lot's measured assay. Then account for the native extract ratio and the carrier percentage. A ratio that counts the carrier is not the same as the native ratio.

Specification

Typical specification for tart cherry extract powder

These values reflect a common ratio extract. Final figures come from the specification sheet and COA for your lot. NLT means not less than, and NMT means not more than.

Storage & Handling

Storage and handling for bulk tart cherry powder

Fruit powders carry natural sugars, so they pick up moisture quickly once a bag is open. These habits help you hold color and flow across several production runs.

Keep it sealed

Close the inner liner right after each use and press out the air. Juice powders pick up moisture from the air and can cake within hours in a humid room.

Store cool and dry

Keep bags off the floor in a dry room at controlled room temperature. Follow the range on the spec sheet.

Keep away from light

Leave the powder in its original opaque packaging. Anthocyanins fade with light and heat, which shows up as a color shift.

Rotate stock

Record the lot number and retest date for each bag. Send older lots to production first.

Buyer FAQ

Tart cherry extract buyer FAQ

Quick answers to the questions procurement and quality teams ask most.

What is the difference between tart cherry juice powder, fruit powder, and extract?

Juice powder is dried juice, usually on a carrier. Fruit powder is the whole dried fruit, milled. Extract is concentrated by ratio or graded by anthocyanins, so it gives you a stated assay to plan around.

How are anthocyanins in tart cherry measured?

Anthocyanins are measured by HPLC or by the pH differential method, AOAC 2005.02. HPLC reports each anthocyanin, while pH differential gives one total. Check which method the COA names before you compare offers.

Does tart cherry powder contain a carrier?

Many juice powders and some extracts do, most often maltodextrin or dextrin. The carrier helps the juice dry into a free flowing powder.

Which tart cherry variety is used?

Montmorency is the most common variety in the US trade, and Balaton is a darker variety. The country of manufacture for each lot is provided with your quote.

Is tart cherry extract water soluble?

Yes, most tart cherry extracts and juice powders dissolve or disperse in water. They give a red color and a sour taste. Whole fruit powder leaves fiber suspended in the drink.

What documents can I get with an order?

A certificate of analysis (COA) and a specification sheet ship with every order. An allergen statement and a safety data sheet may also be available, depending on the lot in inventory. Contact us to request them.

Can I get a sample before a bulk order?

You can request one by choosing sample options on the quote form. We will confirm availability, size, and timing.

How should I store an opened bag?

Close the liner right away, press out the air, and keep the bag in a cool, dry place away from light. Use the powder within the shelf life shown on the COA.
