Bulk St. John's Wort Extract for Supplement Manufacturing
St. John's wort extract is a dry powder made from the flowering tops of Hypericum perforatum L., a yellow flowered plant in the Hypericaceae family. It is usually standardized to 0.3% total hypericins by UV, and some specifications also state hyperforin by HPLC. We supply it in bulk to supplement brands, contract manufacturers, and formulators, with lot documents for your quality team.
A well documented herb extract for capsule and powder formulas
St. John's wort extract has named marker compounds and published USP test methods. Most of the market trades one standard grade, so supplier quotes are easy to compare. Your quality team gets clear targets for every lot.
Named marker compounds
Hypericin and pseudohypericin are red plant pigments found in the flowers and leaves. Hyperforin is a separate compound in the same tissue. Specifications name one or both as the assay target.
One standard market grade
The most widely listed grade is 0.3% total hypericins, measured by UV. Some suppliers add a hyperforin figure measured by HPLC for buyers who need it.
Published USP standards
USP has monographs for the herb, the powdered herb, and the powdered extract. They set identity tests, content ranges, and label details such as solvent and extract ratio.
Fine, dark powder
Published specs describe a brown to brownish black powder where 95% passes an 80 mesh screen. That suits capsule filling, tableting, and dry blending.
Ethanol and water extraction
Standard extracts use ethanol and water, then dry the liquid to a powder. One published spec lists 70% ethanol at a native ratio of about 10 parts herb to 1 part extract.
Cultivated supply
Published specs name cultivated, hand harvested plants from China and extract made in India. The herb is cut shortly before or during flowering.
Where formulators use St. John's wort extract
This extract fits measured formats where fill weight and serving size are controlled, including:
- Capsules
- Compressed tablets
- Single ingredient powders
- Multiple ingredient botanical blends
- Stick packs and sachets
- Gummies, after color, taste, and stability trials
- Private label programs
Plan fill weights from the confirmed assay on each COA. The powder is dark brown to black, so check how it looks through a clear capsule shell before you pick a shell color.
What to check before you buy St. John's wort extract
Two powders sold under the same name can differ in species, plant part, solvent, and assay method. Review these points together, and ask for lot documents before you approve a supplier.
Species and plant part
Confirm Hypericum perforatum L. flowering tops on both the specification and the certificate of analysis (COA). Several related Hypericum species grow in the same regions.
Identity by HPTLC
An HPTLC fingerprint compared with a reference standard confirms the species. Viewing the plate under white light as well as UV light also shows any colorant that does not belong to the plant.
UV or HPLC assay
A UV result gives one total for all hypericin-type pigments. HPLC separates hypericin and pseudohypericin and measures each one. Ask which method sits behind the stated grade, and whether results are on a dry basis.
Solvent, ratio, and carrier
Confirm the extraction solvent and the native extract ratio. Ask whether a carrier, such as maltodextrin, is added to reach the stated grade.
Contaminant limits
Check heavy metals by ICP-MS, microbial limits by USP methods, pesticide residues, and residual ethanol. If you sell into Europe, add pyrrolizidine alkaloids to the list.
Origin and harvest
Ask for the country of origin and whether the herb was cultivated or wild collected. Cultivated herb gives more consistent pigment levels from lot to lot.
Label math: If your label lists hypericin per serving, base the number on each lot's measured assay and your own finished product testing. A UV figure and an HPLC figure for the same lot are not the same number, so keep one method throughout.
Typical specification for St. John's wort extract
These values reflect the common 0.3% hypericin grade. Final figures come from the specification sheet and COA for your lot. NLT means not less than, and NMT means not more than.

Storage and handling for bulk St. John's wort extract
The USP text for St. John's wort calls for tight containers kept away from light and moisture. These steps keep the powder in good condition between production runs.
Keep it sealed
Close the inner liner after each use and press out the air. Extract powders pick up moisture from the air and can cake when left open.
Store cool and dry
Keep bags off the floor in a dry room, away from heat sources. Follow the temperature range on the spec sheet.
Keep away from light
Leave the powder in its original opaque packaging. Hyperforin in particular breaks down with light, heat, and air.
Rotate stock
Record the lot number and retest date for each bag. If your spec names hyperforin, retest older lots before they go to production.
St. John's wort extract buyer FAQ
Quick answers to the questions procurement and quality teams ask most.
What is St. John's wort extract standardized to?
Most bulk St. John's wort extract is standardized to 0.3% total hypericins, measured by UV. Some specifications also state a hyperforin figure measured by HPLC. Check which compounds and which method your label and finished product spec rely on.
What is the difference between hypericin by UV and by HPLC?
UV reports one total for all hypericin-type pigments, while HPLC separates hypericin and pseudohypericin and measures each one. A UV reading cannot tell a plant pigment from an added colorant. That is why many quality teams pair a UV assay with an HPTLC identity test.
Which part of the plant is used?
The flowering tops, meaning the upper stems, leaves, and flowers of Hypericum perforatum. USP describes the herb as aerial parts gathered shortly before or during flowering. Roots are not used.
Is St. John's wort extract the same as St. John's wort herb powder?
No. Herb powder is dried, milled flowering tops. Extract is made by soaking the herb in ethanol and water and drying the liquid into a concentrated powder with a stated assay. Extract is the usual choice when a label needs a standardized amount.
Can St. John's wort products be sold in every country?
No, rules differ by market. Ireland, for example, allows St. John's wort only on prescription. The EU sets a pyrrolizidine alkaloid limit of 400 µg/kg for herbal food supplements. Check the rules in each country before you export.
What documents can I get with an order?
Select testing documents on the quote form and we will send what is available for the lot.
Can I get a sample before a bulk order?
Yes. Choose sample options on the quote form and we will confirm size and timing.
How should I store an opened bag?
Close the liner, press out the air, and keep the bag in a cool, dry place away from light. Use the powder within the shelf life shown on the COA.
