Bulk Schisandra Fruit Extract for Supplement Manufacturing

Schisandra extract is a dry powder made from the dried ripe fruit of Schisandra chinensis (Turcz.) Baill., a woody vine whose red berries are called northern schisandra. It is graded by lignans such as schisandrin, measured by HPLC, or by extract ratio. We supply it in bulk to supplement brands, contract manufacturers, and formulators.

Botanical name Schisandra chinensis (Turcz.) Baill.
Plant part Dried ripe fruit (berry)
Typical grade 10:1, or NLT 2% schisandrins (HPLC)
Pack sizes 5 lb, 11 lb, 25 lb, and 55 lb
Why Schisandra Fruit Extract

A fruit extract with named lignans and a USP standard

Schisandra fruit has USP monographs that name its marker compounds. That gives buyers and quality teams clear targets for species, grade, and method.

A fruit defined by USP

USP calls Schisandra chinensis fruit northern schisandra. Its monographs define the dried ripe fruit, collected in the fall.

Published lignan minimums

For the dried fruit, USP sets at least 0.40% schisandrin and at least 0.95% total lignans on the dried basis. Extracts concentrate these compounds.

Four named lignans

USP totals schisandrin, schisandrol B, schisandrin A, and schisandrin B. Ask which of these your supplier counts in its grade.

Ratio or lignan grade

Suppliers sell water extracts at 4:1, 10:1, or 20:1, and lignan grades from about 1% to 13%. A ratio and a lignan grade describe different things.

Fine brown powder

Most extracts are brown yellow to red brown powders that pass an 80 mesh screen. That suits capsule filling, tableting, and dry blending.

A sour, complex taste

The fruit's Chinese name, wu wei zi, means five flavor fruit. Expect a sour, bitter taste and plan flavor trials for drink mixes and gummies.

Formulation Uses

Where formulators use schisandra fruit extract

This extract fits measured formats where fill weight and serving size are controlled, including:

  • Capsules
  • Compressed tablets
  • Single ingredient powders
  • Multiple ingredient botanical blends
  • Stick packs and sachets
  • Powdered drink mixes, after taste trials
  • Gummies, after taste and stability trials
  • Private label programs

A 10:1 extract and a lignan graded extract are not interchangeable gram for gram. Plan fill weights from the confirmed values on each COA, and recalculate whenever you change grade or supplier.

What Commercial Buyers Should Review

What to check before you buy schisandra extract

Two powders sold as schisandra can differ in species, grade wording, and assay method. Review these points together, and ask for lot documents before you approve a supplier.

Northern or southern schisandra

Confirm Schisandra chinensis on the specification and certificate of analysis (COA). Schisandra sphenanthera, called southern schisandra, is a separate species with a different lignan profile.

Identity by HPLC or HPTLC

A lignan fingerprint compared with reference standards confirms the species. Anwulignan is a marker of S. sphenanthera, so ask whether the method checks for it.

Minimum, not maximum

A grade should read NLT (not less than). A value written as NMT (not more than) is a ceiling, so the lot could fall well below the number in the product name.

Which lignans count

Suppliers use schisandrins, schizandrin, and total lignans for different measures. Ask which compounds the percentage includes and whether it is measured by HPLC.

Solvent, ratio, and carrier

Confirm the extraction solvent, such as water or ethanol, and the ratio. Ask whether any carrier, such as maltodextrin, is added to the finished powder.

Contaminant limits

Check heavy metals by ICP-MS, microbial limits by USP methods, pesticide residues, and residual solvents for ethanol extracts. Compare each limit with your own finished product specification.

Label math: If your label lists schisandrin or total lignans per serving, base it on each lot's measured assay and your own finished product testing. Use the same lignan definition on your label that the COA uses.

Specification

Typical specification for schisandra fruit extract

These values follow the USP fruit monographs and common supplier sheets for schisandra extract. Final figures come from the specification sheet and COA for your lot. NLT means not less than, and NMT means not more than.

Storage & Handling

Storage and handling for bulk schisandra extract

Fruit extracts hold their quality longest when they stay sealed, dry, and out of light. These steps keep the powder in good condition between production runs.

Keep it sealed

Close the inner liner after each use and press out the air. Fruit extract powders pick up moisture from the air and can cake when left open.

Store cool and dry

Keep bags off the floor in a dry room at room temperature, away from heat sources. Follow the range on the spec sheet.

Keep away from light

Leave the powder in its original opaque packaging. Light and heat can shift color and lignan values over time.

Rotate stock

Record the lot number, grade, and retest date for each bag. Send older lots to production first.

Buyer FAQ

Schisandra extract buyer FAQ

Quick answers to the questions procurement and quality teams ask most.

What is schisandra extract standardized to?

Schisandra extract is standardized to lignans, such as schisandrin or total schisandrins, measured by HPLC. Some suppliers sell by ratio instead, such as 10:1. Ask which compounds the percentage on the COA includes.

What is the difference between Schisandra chinensis and Schisandra sphenanthera?

They are two species with different lignan profiles. S. chinensis is northern schisandra, the species in the USP monographs. S. sphenanthera is southern schisandra, which contains anwulignan and other markers that an HPLC fingerprint can detect.

Is schisandra berry the same as schisandra fruit?

Yes. Berry and fruit name the same dried ripe fruit of Schisandra chinensis. Specifications and USP use the word fruit.

How do you confirm schisandra identity?

An HPLC or HPTLC lignan fingerprint compared with reference standards confirms the species. A check for anwulignan helps rule out southern schisandra.

What does a 10:1 schisandra extract mean?

A 10:1 extract was made from about 10 kg of dried fruit for each 1 kg of finished powder. The ratio describes the process, not the lignan content. Ask for a lignan value on the COA as well.

What does schisandra extract taste like?

Schisandra extract tastes sour and somewhat bitter. Capsules and tablets avoid the issue, while drink mixes and gummies need flavor trials.

What documents can I get with an order?

A certificate of analysis (COA) and a specification sheet ship with every order. An allergen statement and a safety data sheet may also be available, depending on the lot in inventory. Contact us to request them.

Can I get a sample before a bulk order?

You can request one by choosing sample options on the quote form. We will confirm availability, size, and timing.
