Bulk Pea Protein Isolate Powder for Supplement and Food Manufacturing

Pea protein isolate is a cream colored powder made from dried yellow peas (Pisum sativum L.), with protein usually stated at 80% or more on a dry basis. It is made by separating the protein from the starch and fiber of the pea, then drying it to a fine powder. We supply it in bulk to supplement brands, contract manufacturers, and food formulators, with lot documents for your quality team.

Why Pea Protein Isolate

A plant protein that is simple to specify and blend

Pea protein isolate is sold on a clear protein number with standard test methods. It has a pale color and a mild taste that fit many powder formats. That makes supplier comparison straightforward for buyers and quality teams.

A defined protein number

Protein is measured as nitrogen multiplied by 6.25, usually by Kjeldahl or Dumas combustion. Specs state it on a dry basis, so you can compare lots and suppliers on the same footing.

Isolate and concentrate grades

Isolates are typically sold at 80% to 85% minimum protein on a dry basis. Concentrates usually test near 60%. The grade you pick sets how much powder each serving needs.

Water based processing

Isolates are made by wet processing that separates protein from starch and fiber, then spray drying. Major makers state that no solvents such as hexane are used. Confirm the process for your lot.

Pale color and mild taste

Good lots are cream to light beige with a bland taste with a slight pea note. Some makers select pea varieties for fewer off notes. Ask for a sample to judge flavor in your base.

Fine, blendable powder

Most spec sheets call for about 90% through a 100 mesh screen. Bulk density is often near 0.5 g/mL, which suits scoop filled tubs, pouches, and stick packs.

Clear allergen position

Pea is not one of the nine major food allergens under US law. It is still named on the ingredient statement, and cross contact with soy or gluten depends on the plant.

Formulation Uses

Where formulators use pea protein isolate

Pea protein isolate fits powder and food formats where protein grams per serving are measured, including:

  • Protein powders
  • Powdered drink mixes
  • Sports nutrition powders
  • Meal replacement shakes
  • Protein bars
  • Plant based beverages
  • Baked goods and snacks
  • Private label programs

Base your protein claim math on the confirmed protein result and basis on each COA. An 80% isolate measured on a dry basis delivers a little less protein per gram as packed, because the powder holds some moisture. Recalculate scoop size when you change grade or supplier.

What Commercial Buyers Should Review

What to check before you buy pea protein isolate

Two powders sold as pea protein can differ in protein level, basis, origin, and trace metal results. Review these points together, and ask for lot documents before you approve a supplier.

Protein basis and method

Ask whether protein is reported on a dry basis or as is, and whether it was measured by Kjeldahl or Dumas with a 6.25 factor. An 80% dry basis result reads as a smaller number as is.

Isolate or concentrate

Confirm the grade name matches the protein result. Isolates usually test at 80% or more on a dry basis, while concentrates often sit near 60%.

Lead and cadmium results

Peas take up trace minerals from the soil they grow in, so lead and cadmium are routine checks. Ask for the measured ICP-MS result on each lot as well as the spec limit.

Sodium and pH

Sodium differs from grade to grade and from maker to maker. Ask for sodium per 100 g and pH so your nutrition panel and drink base stay consistent.

Allergen and cross contact

Ask for a written allergen statement that names pea and lists any shared lines with soy, gluten, or milk. Check that it matches your own allergen controls.

Country of origin and duties

Ask where the peas were grown and where the protein was made. Since August 2024, US antidumping and countervailing duties apply to pea protein from China.

Serving math: Protein powders are used at 20 to 30 g per serving, so small ppm figures add up. At a 30 g serving, each 0.1 ppm of lead equals 3 micrograms per serving. Use measured lot results and your own finished product testing to set your limit.

Specification

Typical specification for pea protein isolate

These values reflect a common 80% isolate grade. Final figures come from the specification sheet and COA for your lot. NLT means not less than, and NMT means not more than.

Storage & Handling

Storage and handling for bulk pea protein

Protein powders keep well when they stay sealed, dry, and away from strong odors. These habits help you hold color, flavor, and flow across production runs.

Keep it sealed

Close the inner liner after each use and press out the air. Protein powder picks up moisture from the air and can clump when left open.

Store cool and dry

Keep bags off the floor in a dry room, away from heat and large swings in humidity. Follow the temperature range on the spec sheet.

Keep away from odors

Store pea protein apart from spices, flavors, and cleaning chemicals. Fine protein powders can pick up odors through open liners.

Control dust and rotate stock

Scoop gently and use local dust extraction at the blending station. Record the lot number and retest date for each bag, and use older lots first.

Buyer FAQ

Pea protein isolate buyer FAQ

Quick answers to the questions procurement and quality teams ask most.

What is the difference between pea protein isolate and concentrate?

The difference is protein level. Isolates are usually sold at 80% to 85% minimum protein on a dry basis, while concentrates often sit near 60%. Isolates are the usual choice for protein powders, because each serving needs less powder.

How is the protein percentage measured?

Protein is measured as total nitrogen multiplied by 6.25, using the Kjeldahl or Dumas method. Check whether the COA reports it on a dry basis or as is, because the as is figure includes the moisture in the powder.

Is pea a major food allergen?

No. Pea is not one of the nine major food allergens defined under US law. It is still named on the ingredient statement, so ask for the allergen statement and cross contact details for each lot.

What heavy metal results should I ask for?

Ask for measured lead, cadmium, arsenic, and mercury results by ICP-MS for each lot. Then convert lead and cadmium to micrograms per serving at your scoop size, and compare them with your finished product limits.

Does country of origin matter for pea protein?

Yes. Since August 2024, the US has applied antidumping and countervailing duties to pea protein from China with at least 65% protein on a dry basis. Ask for the country of origin on each lot.

How does pea protein isolate taste and mix?

It has a bland taste with a slight pea note and a cream color. It disperses well in shakes and drink mixes, and some grades are thicker in water than others. Test a sample in your own base before you scale up.

What documents can I get with an order?

Select testing documents on the quote form and we will send what is available for the lot.

Can I get a sample before a bulk order?

Yes. Choose sample options on the quote form and we will confirm size and timing.
