Bulk Olive Leaf Extract for Supplement Manufacturing

Olive leaf extract is a dry powder made from the leaves of the olive tree, Olea europaea L. It is usually standardized to oleuropein, measured by HPLC. We supply it in bulk to supplement brands, contract manufacturers, and formulators.

Botanical name Olea europaea L.
Plant part Leaf
Typical grade 20% oleuropein (HPLC)
Pack sizes 5 lb, 11 lb, 25 lb, and 55 lb
Why Olive Leaf Extract

A leaf extract with one clear marker and a wide grade range

Olive leaf extract is simple to specify. One marker compound, oleuropein, sets the grade, and HPLC is the standard way to measure it. That makes lot comparison straightforward for buyers and quality teams.

One named marker

Oleuropein is the compound most olive leaf specifications name. It gives you a single measurable target for every lot.

A published reference standard

The European Pharmacopoeia olive leaf monograph sets a minimum of 5% oleuropein for the dried leaf. A separate monograph covers olive leaf dry extract.

Grades from 10% to 40%

Suppliers list 10%, 18%, 20%, 30%, and 40% oleuropein grades. Higher grades let you use less powder per capsule.

Ethanol and water extraction

Standard extracts are made with ethanol and water, then dried to a powder. European reference extracts use ratios of about 8 to 12 parts leaf to 1 part extract.

Color and taste

Most grades are yellow brown to brown powders. Oleuropein is the bitter compound in olives and their leaves, so the extract tastes bitter.

Leaves from olive growing

Olive leaves come from the same orchards that grow olives for fruit and oil. Cultivar and harvest season both shift oleuropein content, so they belong in your supplier file.

Formulation Uses

Where formulators use olive leaf extract

This extract fits measured formats where fill weight and serving size are controlled, including:

  • Capsules
  • Compressed tablets
  • Single ingredient powders
  • Multiple ingredient botanical blends
  • Stick packs and sachets
  • Powdered drink mixes, after taste trials
  • Gummies, after taste and stability trials
  • Private label programs

Plan fill weights from the confirmed oleuropein assay on each COA. A 20% extract and a 40% extract are not interchangeable gram for gram, so recalculate your serving math whenever you change grades.

What Commercial Buyers Should Review

What to check before you buy olive leaf extract

Two powders sold under the same name can differ in grade, solvent, and assay method. Review these points together, and ask for lot documents before you approve a supplier.

Species and plant part

Confirm Olea europaea L. leaf on both the specification and the certificate of analysis (COA). The extract should come from leaves, not from olive fruit or oil byproducts.

Identity by TLC or HPTLC

A thin layer chromatography fingerprint compared with an oleuropein reference standard confirms identity. Microscopy of the leaf before extraction can add a second check.

Grade on paper and in the lab

Check that the oleuropein value on the spec sheet matches the grade in the product name. Some listings name one grade while the spec states a smaller minimum.

Assay method and basis

Ask whether oleuropein is measured by HPLC, and whether results are on a dry or as is basis. A UV result for total polyphenols is a different measure.

Solvent, ratio, and carrier

Confirm the extraction solvent and ratio, and ask for the residual ethanol limit. Ask whether any carrier, such as maltodextrin, is added to reach the stated grade.

Origin and harvest

Ask for the country of origin, the olive cultivar if known, and the harvest month. Each one can shift oleuropein content from lot to lot.

Label math: If your label lists oleuropein per serving, base the number on each lot's measured assay and your own finished product testing. A stated grade is a minimum, so the measured value on the COA is the figure to work from.

Specification

Typical specification for olive leaf extract

These values reflect the common 20% oleuropein grade and published supplier sheets. Final figures come from the specification sheet and COA for your lot. NLT means not less than, and NMT means not more than.

Storage & Handling

Storage and handling for bulk olive leaf extract

Leaf extracts hold their quality longest when they stay sealed, dry, and out of light. These steps keep the powder in good condition between production runs.

Keep it sealed

Close the inner liner after each use and press out the air. Extract powders pick up moisture from the air and can cake when left open.

Store cool and dry

Keep bags off the floor in a dry room, away from heat sources. Follow the temperature range on the spec sheet.

Keep away from light

Leave the powder in its original opaque packaging. Light, heat, and moisture can shift color and oleuropein values over time.

Rotate stock

Record the lot number, grade, and retest date for each bag. Send older lots to production first.

Buyer FAQ

Olive leaf extract buyer FAQ

Quick answers to the questions procurement and quality teams ask most.

What is olive leaf extract standardized to?

Olive leaf extract is standardized to oleuropein, measured by HPLC. Common grades are 10%, 20%, and 40%, and some suppliers sell 18% or 30%. Ask whether the COA reports the result on a dry or as is basis.

Which oleuropein grade should I choose, 20% or 40%?

The 20% grade is the most widely listed and costs less per kilogram. A 40% grade lets you use less powder per serving. Choose based on your label target, capsule size, and cost per finished serving.

Is olive leaf extract the same as olive leaf powder?

No. Olive leaf powder is dried, milled leaf, which the European Pharmacopoeia expects to hold at least 5% oleuropein. Extract is made by soaking the leaf in ethanol and water and drying the liquid into a concentrated powder with a stated grade.

How do you confirm olive leaf identity?

A TLC or HPTLC fingerprint compared with an oleuropein reference standard confirms identity. For whole leaf, microscopy can show the leaf's typical shield shaped hairs. An oleuropein assay alone shows grade, not species.

Does olive leaf extract taste bitter?

Yes. Oleuropein is a bitter compound, and higher grades carry more of it. Capsules and tablets avoid the issue, while drink mixes and gummies need flavor trials.

What documents can I get with an order?

A certificate of analysis (COA) and a specification sheet ship with every order. An allergen statement and a safety data sheet may also be available, depending on the lot in inventory. Contact us to request them.

Can I get a sample before a bulk order?

You can request one by choosing sample options on the quote form. We will confirm availability, size, and timing.

How should I store an opened bag?

Close the liner, press out the air, and keep the bag in a cool, dry place away from light. Use the powder within the shelf life shown on the COA.
