Bulk Nattokinase Enzyme Powder for Supplement Manufacturing

Nattokinase is an enzyme powder made from soybeans fermented with Bacillus subtilis var. natto, the culture used for the Japanese food natto. Each grade is defined by enzyme activity in FU per gram rather than by weight. We supply it in bulk to supplement brands, contract manufacturers, and formulators, with lot documents for your quality team.

Why Nattokinase Powder

A defined enzyme ingredient for capsule and tablet formulas

Nattokinase is specified by activity, not by percentage. A clear unit, a named assay, and a public benchmark specification make lot to lot comparison straightforward for buyers and quality teams.

Graded by activity

Specifications state nattokinase in FU (fibrin degradation units) per gram. The most widely listed grade is 20,000 FU/g, so a 100 mg fill carries about 2,000 FU.

A well characterized protein

Nattokinase is a serine protease of the subtilisin family, about 275 amino acids and 27.7 kDa. Its enzyme classification number is EC 3.4.21.62.

Fermentation origin

Producers ferment soybean with Bacillus subtilis var. natto, recover the enzyme by filtration, and dry it to a powder. The powder is then standardized to its stated activity, often with a dextrin carrier.

Vitamin K2 removed

Natto naturally contains vitamin K2 (menaquinone-7). Ingredient grade nattokinase is processed to remove it, and good specifications set a limit measured by HPLC.

Light, mild powder

Typical lots are off white to pale yellow with a faint odor. Carrier standardized grades dissolve or disperse readily in water for blending and testing.

Public benchmark specification

The EU authorized one branded fermented soybean extract in 2017 at 20,000 to 28,000 FU/g, with vitamin K2 NMT 0.1 mg/kg. That gives buyers a published reference for activity and composition.

Formulation Uses

Where formulators use nattokinase powder

This enzyme fits dry, measured formats where fill weight and activity per unit are controlled, including:

  • Capsules
  • Delayed release or acid resistant capsules
  • Compressed tablets, including enteric coated tablets
  • Softgels, as an oil suspension
  • Single ingredient powders for encapsulation
  • Multiple ingredient capsule blends
  • Private label programs

Plan fill weights from the FU result on each COA. Published stability data show activity holds well in dry powder. It drops in solutions below pH 5.0, so acidic liquid bases and gummies need their own trials. Many brands add an overage based on supplier stability data.

What Commercial Buyers Should Review

What to check before you buy nattokinase powder

Two powders labeled 20,000 FU/g can differ in assay method, carrier, and source. Review these points together, and ask for lot documents before you approve a supplier.

Activity unit and method

Confirm the result is in FU per gram and ask which assay produced it. The fibrin degradation method reads UV absorbance at 275 nm. Fibrin plate, synthetic substrate, and IU results do not convert directly to FU.

Activity over shelf life

Ask for stability data showing FU at release and at the end of the stated shelf life. Use it to set your overage and retest dates.

Carrier and composition

Ask what carrier is used to reach the stated activity, and at what percentage. Resistant dextrin and maltodextrin from corn are both common.

Vitamin K2 result

Confirm that vitamin K2 (menaquinone-7) was removed and that each COA reports a result by HPLC. A limit of NMT 0.1 mg/kg is the published EU benchmark.

Soy source and allergen statement

Nattokinase is usually fermented on soybean. Make sure the allergen statement matches the substrate named on the specification, and ask for a non-GMO soybean declaration if you need one.

Microbial and metals limits

Check heavy metals by ICP-MS, microbial limits by USP methods, and a limit for spore forming bacteria. The production organism is a spore former, so check this row closely for enzyme powders.

Label math: If your label lists FU per capsule, base it on each lot's measured activity. Confirm it with your own finished product testing at the end of shelf life. Enzyme activity can drift in storage, so plan your overage from stability data rather than the release COA alone.

Specification

Typical specification for nattokinase powder

These values reflect the common 20,000 FU/g grade. Final figures come from the specification sheet and COA for your lot. NLT means not less than, and NMT means not more than.

Storage & Handling

Storage and handling for bulk nattokinase

Enzyme powders hold their activity longest when they stay sealed, dry, and cool. These habits help you hold activity across several production runs and keep your blending room clean.

Keep it sealed

Close the inner liner after each use and press out the air. Enzyme powders pick up moisture from the air, and damp powder loses activity faster.

Store cool and dry

Keep bags off the floor in a dry room, away from heat sources. Follow the temperature range on the spec sheet, and keep the powder in its original foil packaging.

Control dust

Protease enzyme dust can sensitize workers who breathe it over time. Use local dust extraction, respiratory protection, and gentle transfer when you weigh and blend.

Rotate stock

Record the lot number and retest date for each bag. Send older lots to production first, and retest FU on any lot held past its retest date.

Buyer FAQ

Nattokinase powder buyer FAQ

Quick answers to the questions procurement and quality teams ask most.

What does FU mean on a nattokinase specification?

FU stands for fibrin degradation units, the activity unit used for nattokinase. The assay incubates the enzyme with a fibrin substrate at 37 °C and reads the released fragments by UV absorbance at 275 nm. A higher FU per gram means more enzyme activity in each gram of powder.

Which grade should I choose?

Most buyers choose 20,000 FU/g, the most widely listed grade. At that grade, 100 mg of powder carries about 2,000 FU. Choose based on your label target per capsule, capsule size, and cost per finished unit.

Can I compare FU values from two suppliers?

Only when both use the same assay method and reference standard. Results from fibrin plate, synthetic substrate, or IU methods do not convert directly to FU. Ask each supplier to name the method on the COA.

Is nattokinase made from soy?

Yes, it is usually produced by fermenting soybeans with Bacillus subtilis var. natto. Soy is a major food allergen in the US, so confirm the allergen statement for your lot.

Has the vitamin K2 been removed?

Ingredient grade nattokinase is normally processed to remove vitamin K2, and each COA should report the result. The published EU benchmark limit is NMT 0.1 mg/kg.

What documents can I get with an order?

Select testing documents on the quote form and we will send what is available for the lot.

Can I get a sample before a bulk order?

Yes. Choose sample options on the quote form and we will confirm size and timing.

How should I store an opened bag?

Close the liner, press out the air, and keep the bag in a cool, dry place. Weigh it under dust extraction, and retest FU on any lot held past its retest date.
