Bulk Lemon Balm Leaf Extract for Supplement Manufacturing

Lemon balm extract is a dry powder made from the leaves of Melissa officinalis L., a perennial herb in the mint family (Lamiaceae). It is usually standardized to rosmarinic acid, measured by HPLC, or sold as a ratio extract such as 4:1. We supply it in bulk to supplement brands, contract manufacturers, and formulators.

Botanical name Melissa officinalis L.
Plant part Leaf
Typical grade 5% rosmarinic acid (HPLC)
Pack sizes 5 lb, 11 lb, 25 lb, and 55 lb
Why Lemon Balm Extract

A leaf extract with one main marker and published specs

Lemon balm extract is easy to specify. It has one main marker compound, standard HPLC methods, and published specs to compare against. That makes lot to lot comparison simple for buyers and quality teams.

Rosmarinic acid as the marker

Rosmarinic acid is the main phenolic acid in lemon balm leaf. Specs state a minimum measured by HPLC, which gives you a clear target for every lot.

Graded and ratio extracts

Suppliers list rosmarinic acid grades such as 5% and 7%. Ratio extracts, such as 4:1, state how much leaf went into each part of extract instead.

Two ways to measure

Supplier grades usually give rosmarinic acid alone by HPLC. Pharmacopoeial methods measure a wider group, total hydroxycinnamic derivatives, and express it as rosmarinic acid.

Water and ethanol extraction

One published spec uses 30% ethanol in water at a native ratio of 4 to 8:1. The extract is dried onto maltodextrin with up to 1% silica as a flow agent.

Fine, free flowing powder

Spec sheets call for a fine brown powder, with NLT 95% passing a 200 micron screen. That suits capsule filling, tableting, and dry blending.

Field crop origins

Supplier listings name France, Germany, Poland, and the United States as producing countries. Lemon balm is grown as a field crop and harvested from May to September.

Formulation Uses

Where formulators use lemon balm extract

This extract fits measured formats where fill weight and serving size are controlled, including:

  • Capsules
  • Compressed tablets
  • Single ingredient powders
  • Multiple ingredient botanical blends
  • Powdered drink mixes
  • Stick packs and sachets
  • Gummies, after taste and stability trials
  • Tea blends, using cut leaf
  • Private label programs

Plan fill weights from the confirmed assay on each COA. A 5% and a 7% rosmarinic acid grade are not interchangeable gram for gram, and a 4:1 ratio extract has no assay at all. Recalculate your serving math whenever you change grades.

What Commercial Buyers Should Review

What to check before you buy lemon balm extract

Two powders sold as lemon balm extract can differ in plant part, assay method, carrier, and starting material. Review these points together, and ask for lot documents before you approve a supplier.

Species and plant part

Confirm Melissa officinalis L. on both the specification and the certificate of analysis (COA). Ask whether it is leaf only or aerial parts with stems, since both are sold.

Assay method and basis

Ask whether the grade is rosmarinic acid by HPLC or total hydroxycinnamic derivatives by UV. Confirm the basis (dried or as is), and compare quotes only when the methods match.

Identity fingerprint

An HPLC or TLC fingerprint compared with a reference standard confirms lemon balm. Rosmarinic acid and caffeic acid are the usual reference markers.

Solvent, ratio, and carrier

Confirm the extraction solvent and native extract ratio. Ask for the carrier and any flow agent by name and percentage, such as maltodextrin and silica.

Starting material

Ask whether the extract is made from whole dried leaf or from leaf already steam distilled for its oil. Both can be extracted, so it belongs on the spec.

Contaminant limits

Check heavy metals by ICP-MS, microbial limits by USP methods, pesticide residues, and residual ethanol. Compare each limit with your own finished product specification.

Label math: If your label lists rosmarinic acid per serving, base the number on each lot's measured assay and your own finished product testing. A carrier and flow agent add to the powder weight but not to the assay.

Specification

Typical specification for lemon balm extract

These values reflect a common 5% rosmarinic acid grade. Final figures come from the specification sheet and COA for your lot. NLT means not less than, and NMT means not more than.

Storage & Handling

Storage and handling for bulk lemon balm extract

Botanical extracts hold their quality when they stay sealed, dry, and out of light. Published lemon balm specs give a 2 year shelf life when sealed and stored as directed.

Keep it sealed

Close the inner liner after each use and press out the air. Spray dried extract powders pick up moisture from the air and can cake when left open.

Store cool and dry

Keep bags off the floor in a dry room, away from heat sources. Follow the temperature range on the spec sheet.

Keep away from light

Leave the powder in its original opaque packaging. Light and heat can shift color and assay over time.

Rotate stock

Record the lot number and retest date for each bag. Send older lots to production first.

Buyer FAQ

Lemon balm extract buyer FAQ

Quick answers to the questions procurement and quality teams ask most.

What is lemon balm extract standardized to?

It is usually standardized to rosmarinic acid, measured by HPLC. Listed grades include 5% and 7%. Some suppliers sell ratio extracts such as 4:1 instead, which state the leaf to extract ratio without an assay.

What is the difference between rosmarinic acid by HPLC and total hydroxycinnamic derivatives?

They measure different things. HPLC measures rosmarinic acid by itself. Pharmacopoeial methods measure a wider group of related compounds by UV and express the total as rosmarinic acid, so check which one your COA reports.

Is lemon balm extract made from the leaf or the whole herb?

Both are sold. Some extracts use leaf only, and others use the aerial parts, including stems. The specification should name the part, so ask before you compare grades.

Does lemon balm extract smell like lemon?

Not strongly. The fresh leaf has a lemony odor from a small amount of essential oil, about 0.02 to 0.3%. Extract powders are specified by color and a characteristic odor, so smell a sample before you plan a flavor system.

How is lemon balm identity confirmed?

Identity is confirmed with an HPLC or TLC fingerprint compared against a reference standard. Rosmarinic acid and caffeic acid are the usual reference markers. Ask for the identity result on each COA.

What documents can I get with an order?

A certificate of analysis (COA) and a specification sheet ship with every order. An allergen statement and a safety data sheet may also be available, depending on the lot in inventory. Contact us to request them.

Can I get a sample before a bulk order?

You can request one by choosing sample options on the quote form. We will confirm availability, size, and timing.

How should I store an opened bag?

Close the liner, press out the air, and keep the bag in a cool, dry place away from light. Use the powder within the shelf life shown on the COA.
