Bulk Grape Seed Extract Powder for Supplement Manufacturing

Grape seed extract is a dry powder made from the seeds of wine grapes, Vitis vinifera L., extracted with water or ethanol and then dried. It is usually standardized to proanthocyanidins, often called OPCs, measured by UV or HPLC. We supply it in bulk to supplement brands, contract manufacturers, and formulators, with lot documents for your quality team.

Why Grape Seed Extract

A seed extract with a measurable marker class

Grape seed extract is specified by its proanthocyanidin content. A USP monograph sets out identity tests and assay methods, so your quality team has a public reference to work from. Pin down the grade, the assay method, and the solvent for each lot.

Proanthocyanidins as the marker

Proanthocyanidins are chains of catechin and epicatechin units found in grape seed. Short chains of two to five units are called oligomeric proanthocyanidins, or OPCs.

Two common assay methods

Most bulk listings state OPC content by UV, a spectrophotometric method. The USP monograph measures oligomers by HPLC and sets a minimum of 75.0%, so the two numbers are not directly comparable.

Identity by fingerprint

The USP identity test is an HPTLC fingerprint that shows dimer, trimer, and epicatechin gallate bands. Matching that pattern against a reference standard confirms grape seed as the source.

Familiar market grades

The most widely listed grade is 95% OPC by UV. Suppliers also sell 95% polyphenol grades and grades up to 98% OPC, so match the grade name to the method on the COA.

Fine, water soluble powder

Grape seed extract is a fine reddish brown to dark brown powder that dissolves in water. Most spec sheets call for 95% through an 80 mesh screen, which suits capsule filling and dry blending.

Water and ethanol extraction

Seeds are extracted with hot water, ethanol, or a mix of the two, then purified and dried. The USP monograph also allows acetone, methanol, and ethyl acetate, so ask which solvent your lot used.

Formulation Uses

Where formulators use grape seed extract

This extract fits measured formats where fill weight and serving size are controlled, including:

  • Capsules
  • Compressed tablets
  • Single ingredient powders
  • Multiple ingredient botanical blends
  • Stick packs and sachets
  • Powdered drink mixes, after taste trials
  • Functional beverages, after color and taste trials
  • Gummies, after taste and stability trials
  • Private label programs

Grape seed extract has a bitter, astringent taste and gives water a dark reddish brown color. Plan taste and color trials for drinks and gummies, and base fill weights on the confirmed assay on each COA.

What Commercial Buyers Should Review

What to check before you buy grape seed extract

Two powders sold as 95% OPC can differ in source, assay method, and solvent. Review these points together, and ask for lot documents before you approve a supplier.

Species and plant part

Confirm Vitis vinifera L. seed on both the specification and the certificate of analysis (COA). Grape pomace extract, which includes skins, is a different ingredient with a different profile.

Assay method and basis

Ask whether the OPC figure comes from UV, HPLC, or another method, and whether it is on a dry or as is basis. A total polyphenol result by Folin-Ciocalteu is a different measure again.

Identity fingerprint

Ask for an HPTLC or HPLC fingerprint compared with a grape seed reference standard. Peanut skin and pine bark carry similar compounds, so a fingerprint is the reliable way to confirm the source.

Allergen statement

Ask for a written allergen statement that covers peanut. Keep it in your supplier file with the identity data for the same lot.

Solvent and carrier

Confirm the extraction solvent and the residual solvent result. Ask whether any carrier, such as maltodextrin, is added to reach the stated grade.

Contaminant limits

Check heavy metals by ICP-MS, microbial limits by USP methods, and pesticide residues. Compare each limit with your own finished product specification.

Label math: If your label lists proanthocyanidins per serving, base the number on each lot's measured assay and your own finished product testing. Note the method too, because a UV result and an HPLC result for the same powder are different numbers.

Specification

Typical specification for grape seed extract

These values reflect the common 95% OPC grade by UV, with USP monograph limits shown for comparison. Final figures come from the specification sheet and COA for your lot. NLT means not less than, and NMT means not more than.

Storage & Handling

Storage and handling for bulk grape seed extract

Seed extracts keep best when they stay sealed, dry, and out of light. These steps keep the powder in good condition between production runs.

Keep it sealed

Close the inner liner after each use and press out the air. The powder picks up moisture from the air and can cake when left open.

Store cool and dry

Keep bags off the floor in a dry room at controlled room temperature. Follow the range on the spec sheet.

Keep away from light

Leave the powder in its original opaque packaging. The USP monograph calls for storage away from light and moisture.

Rotate stock

Record the lot number and retest date for each bag. Send older lots to production first.

Buyer FAQ

Grape seed extract buyer FAQ

Quick answers to the questions procurement and quality teams ask most.

What does 95% OPC mean on grape seed extract?

It means the assay for that lot found not less than 95% proanthocyanidins, usually by a UV method. Check which method the COA names, because the figure depends on it.

Is a 95% UV grade the same as a USP grade?

No. The USP monograph measures oligomeric proanthocyanidins by HPLC and sets a minimum of 75.0% on an anhydrous basis. A UV method reads a broader group of compounds, so the two results are not directly comparable.

How do you confirm grape seed identity?

A chromatographic fingerprint compared with a reference standard confirms the source. HPTLC is the USP identity test, and LC-MS can pick up the A-type proanthocyanidins typical of peanut skin.

Is grape seed extract water soluble?

Yes, grape seed extract dissolves in water. The USP monograph allows NMT 2% water insoluble matter. Expect a dark reddish brown color and an astringent taste in drinks.

What documents can I get with an order?

Select testing documents on the quote form and we will send what is available for the lot.

Can I get a sample before a bulk order?

Yes. Choose sample options on the quote form and we will confirm size and timing.

How should I store an opened bag?

Close the liner, press out the air, and keep the bag in a cool, dry place away from light. Use the powder within the shelf life shown on the COA.
