Bulk Garlic Bulb Extract for Supplement Manufacturing
Garlic extract powder is a dry powder made from the bulb, or cloves, of Allium sativum L., the garlic used in cooking. It is usually standardized to allicin or alliin measured by HPLC, and it is sold in regular and deodorized grades. We supply it in bulk to supplement brands, contract manufacturers, and formulators. You can request testing documents and samples on the quote form.
A bulb extract defined by its sulfur compounds
Garlic extract powder is specified by a small set of sulfur compounds with published HPLC methods. Once you know which compound a grade refers to, lots compare cleanly. That makes supplier qualification simple for buyers and quality teams.
Alliin and alliinase
Intact garlic holds alliin and a separate enzyme, alliinase. When the material is crushed or wetted, the enzyme turns alliin into allicin, the compound behind garlic's sharp odor.
Allicin potential
Because allicin forms on contact with water, many specs report allicin potential: the allicin a sample yields under test conditions. One testing program calculates it as 45% of the alliin content.
A compendial reference
The USP monograph for Powdered Garlic sets minimums for alliin and a second sulfur compound. It also calls for drying at no more than 65 °C, since alliinase is sensitive to heat.
Regular and deodorized grades
Grades are sold with the usual garlic odor or in deodorized form. Ask how odor was handled, because the process can change which sulfur compounds remain.
Familiar market grades
Allicin grades of 1% and 5% appear on supplier pages, next to ratio products such as 100:1 garlic oil extract powder. Each grade describes a different material.
Fine, free flowing powder
Spec sheets call for a white to light yellow powder that passes an 80 mesh screen, with a bulk density near 0.30 to 0.60 g/mL. That suits capsule filling, tableting, and dry blending.
Where formulators use garlic extract powder
This extract fits measured formats where fill weight and serving size are controlled, including:
- Capsules
- Compressed tablets
- Coated tablets
- Single ingredient powders
- Multiple ingredient botanical blends
- Stick packs and sachets
- Gummies, after taste and odor trials
- Private label programs
Plan fill weights from the confirmed assay on each COA. A 1% allicin grade, a 5% deodorized grade, and a garlic oil powder are not interchangeable gram for gram. Recalculate your serving math whenever you change grades.
What to check before you buy garlic extract powder
Two powders sold under the same name can differ in the compound they measure, how they were dried, and how odor was handled. Review these points together, and ask for lot documents before you approve a supplier.
Species and plant part
Confirm Allium sativum L. bulb on both the specification and the certificate of analysis (COA). Garlic is also sold as aged, black, and oil products, which are different materials.
Allicin, alliin, or allicin potential
Ask exactly which compound the grade names. Free allicin, alliin, and allicin potential give different numbers for the same lot, so compare like with like.
HPLC method and standard
Ask for the HPLC method and reference standard behind the assay. A TLC result confirms identity, but it does not measure content.
Drying temperature
Ask how the bulbs were dried and at what temperature. Heat can switch off alliinase, and the USP powdered garlic monograph sets a 65 °C ceiling for drying.
Odor handling and carrier
For deodorized grades, ask how odor was handled and whether any carrier or coating was added. Ask the same carrier question for oil based garlic powders.
Contaminants and origin
Check heavy metals by ICP-MS, microbial limits by USP methods, pesticide residues, and residual solvents. Ask for the country of harvest, since suppliers name origins from China and India to Spain and Argentina.
Test the finished product: Allicin results can shift after tableting. Published dissolution testing linked low allicin release to tablet excipients and slow disintegration, so test your finished tablets as well as the raw powder.
Typical specification for garlic extract powder
These values reflect a common 1% allicin grade. Final figures come from the specification sheet and COA for your lot. NLT means not less than, and NMT means not more than.

Storage and handling for bulk garlic extract
Garlic extract holds its spec longest when it stays sealed, dry, and out of light. Keep it dry as well, because water starts the alliinase reaction.
Keep it sealed and dry
Close the inner liner after each use and press out the air. Moisture lets the enzyme start converting alliin, and the powder can cake when left open.
Store cool and dark
Keep bags off the floor in a cool room, away from heat sources and light. Follow the temperature range on the spec sheet.
Keep strong odors apart
Garlic powder has a strong odor that can carry to nearby materials. Store it apart from flavor neutral ingredients, and clean shared scoops and equipment.
Rotate stock
Record the lot number and retest date for each bag. Send older lots to production first.
Garlic extract powder buyer FAQ
Quick answers to the questions procurement and quality teams ask most.
What is garlic extract powder standardized to?
It is usually standardized to allicin, often 1%, or to alliin, measured by HPLC. Many specs report allicin potential, the allicin a sample yields under test. Check which figure your COA states.
What is the difference between allicin, alliin, and allicin potential?
Alliin is the stable compound stored in intact garlic. Allicin forms from alliin when the enzyme alliinase acts on it after crushing or wetting. Allicin potential is the amount of allicin a sample can yield under test conditions.
Is garlic extract powder the same as garlic powder?
Not always. Garlic powder is dried, milled bulb, and the USP monograph sets alliin minimums for it. Extract powders go through a solvent or other process and carry a stated assay, so read the process line on the spec.
What does deodorized garlic extract mean?
It is garlic extract processed to carry little of the usual garlic odor. Ask how the odor was handled and which compound the assay then measures, since processing can change the sulfur profile.
Is aged garlic extract the same product?
No. Aged garlic extract is a separate product made from garlic aged over a long period, and it is specified by S-allylcysteine rather than allicin. Branded aged extracts belong to their owners, so their names do not apply to a generic lot.
What documents can I get with an order?
A certificate of analysis (COA) and a specification sheet ship with every order. An allergen statement and a safety data sheet may also be available, depending on the lot in inventory. Contact us to request them.
Can I get a sample before a bulk order?
You can request one by choosing sample options on the quote form. We will confirm availability, size, and timing.
How should I store an opened bag?
Close the liner, press out the air, and keep the bag in a cool, dry place away from light. Use the powder within the shelf life shown on the COA.
