Bulk Boswellia Serrata Extract for Supplement Manufacturing
Boswellia serrata extract is a dry powder made from the gum resin of Boswellia serrata Roxb. ex Colebr., a tree native to India also known as Indian frankincense or salai guggal. Bulk grades are standardized to boswellic acids, measured by titration, HPLC, or both. We supply it in bulk to supplement brands, contract manufacturers, and formulators.
A resin extract with named acid markers and a species fingerprint
Boswellia serrata extract is specified by its boswellic acid content and checked by species fingerprint. Both have published methods. That gives buyers and quality teams clear numbers to compare between lots.
Gum resin as the source
The extract is made from the gum resin of the Boswellia serrata tree. The resin is the plant part named on the specification, not bark or leaf.
Six boswellic acid markers
The usual markers are KBA (11-keto-beta-boswellic acid) and AKBA, its 3-O-acetyl form. The other four are alpha and beta boswellic acid and their acetyl forms, and HPLC reports each one.
A familiar 65% grade
The most widely listed bulk grade is 65% boswellic acids by titration. Specialty grades enriched in AKBA are also traded, with AKBA stated as its own figure.
Two test methods
Titration measures total acid content and is quick to run. HPLC measures each boswellic acid on its own and is the method for stating AKBA or KBA.
A species fingerprint
A published TLC method separates B. serrata from other frankincense species. B. serrata shows a strong serratol spot and lacks the incensole acetate and caryophyllene oxide spots of the others.
Fine powder, not water soluble
Common grades are off white to light brown powders that pass an 80 mesh screen. Boswellic acids do not dissolve in water, so the powder suits capsules and tablets better than clear drinks.
Where formulators use boswellia serrata extract
This extract fits measured dry formats where fill weight and serving size are controlled, including:
- Capsules
- Compressed tablets
- Softgels, using an oil suspension
- Single ingredient powders
- Multiple ingredient botanical blends
- Stick packs and sachets
- Pet supplement chews, after palatability trials
- Private label programs
Plan fill weights from the measured assay on each COA. A 65% titration grade and an AKBA standardized grade are not interchangeable gram for gram, so recalculate your serving math whenever you change grades.
What to check before you buy boswellia serrata extract
Extracts sold under this name can differ in species, test method, solvent, and origin. Review these points together, and ask for lot documents before you approve a supplier.
Species and plant part
Confirm Boswellia serrata gum resin on the specification and the certificate of analysis (COA). Other frankincense species, such as B. sacra, B. carterii, and B. frereana, have different acid profiles.
Titration or HPLC
A titration result counts all the acids in the resin, including tirucallic acids. Ask for an HPLC profile alongside the titration figure, so you can see the individual boswellic acids.
AKBA and KBA values
If your formula or label names AKBA or KBA, require an HPLC value for each on every COA. Titration cannot report them separately.
Solvent and residuals
Confirm the extraction solvent and the residual solvent result by GC. Resin extracts can be made with several different solvents, so the result belongs in your supplier file.
Contaminant limits
Check heavy metals by ICP-MS, microbial limits by USP methods, and pesticide residues. Compare each limit with your own finished product specification.
Resin origin
Ask for the country where the resin was collected and the country of extraction. The two can differ, and both belong in your supplier file.
Label math: If your label lists boswellic acids or AKBA per serving, base the number on each lot's measured result. Note which method produced it. A stated grade is a minimum, so the measured value on the COA is the figure to work from.
Typical specification for boswellia serrata extract
These values reflect the common 65% boswellic acid grade. Final figures come from the specification sheet and COA for your lot. NLT means not less than, and NMT means not more than.

Storage and handling for bulk boswellia extract
Resin extracts hold their quality when they stay sealed, cool, and dry. These steps keep the powder in good condition between production runs.
Keep it sealed
Close the inner liner after each use and press out the air. A tight seal keeps humid air away from the powder.
Store cool and dry
Keep bags off the floor in a dry room, away from heat sources. Resin powders can soften and clump in warm rooms.
Keep away from light
Leave the powder in its original opaque packaging. Light and heat can shift color and assay over time.
Rotate stock
Record the lot number and retest date for each bag. Send older lots to production first.
Boswellia serrata extract buyer FAQ
Quick answers to the questions procurement and quality teams ask most.
What is boswellia serrata extract standardized to?
Most bulk grades are standardized to total boswellic acids, and 65% by titration is the most common listing. Some grades also state AKBA or KBA by HPLC.
What is the difference between titration and HPLC for boswellic acids?
Titration measures all the acid in a sample, while HPLC separates and measures each boswellic acid. The resin also holds other triterpene acids, such as tirucallic acids, and titration counts them too. Ask for both results when your label names individual acids.
What is AKBA in boswellia extract?
AKBA is 3-O-acetyl-11-keto-beta-boswellic acid, one of the six boswellic acids used as markers for Boswellia serrata resin. It is measured by HPLC, and some specialty extracts state it as a separate grade.
Is Indian frankincense the same as frankincense?
Not quite. Indian frankincense is the common name for Boswellia serrata. Frankincense from Arabia and Africa comes from other species, such as B. sacra, B. carterii, and B. papyrifera, which have different chemical profiles.
Is boswellia extract water soluble?
No. Boswellic acids are triterpene acids that do not dissolve in water. The powder suits capsules, tablets, and dry blends, and softgel makers suspend it in oil.
What documents can I get with an order?
A certificate of analysis (COA) and a specification sheet ship with every order. An allergen statement and a safety data sheet may also be available, depending on the lot in inventory. Contact us to request them.
Can I get a sample before a bulk order?
You can request one by choosing sample options on the quote form. We will confirm availability, size, and timing.
How should I store an opened bag?
Close the liner, press out the air, and keep the bag in a cool, dry place away from light. Use the powder within the shelf life shown on the COA.
