Start with the label, not the box
Most home monitors carry a printed or molded label on the back or underside of the main unit. On some units the label sits inside the battery compartment, so if the outside looks blank, slide the battery cover off and look there. The cuff usually has its own label, and that one matters too. The American Medical Association notes that many devices have the arm circumference range printed directly on the cuff.
The most common mistake is writing down the series name instead of the model number. A marketing name like "5 Series" or "Premium" may cover several different models sold over many years, with different cuffs, memory sizes, and manuals. The model number is a specific code of letters and digits, something like BP7255 or UA 651. That code, not the series name, is what the manufacturer's website and support line will ask for.
Device labels use a standard set of small symbols rather than words, and one manufacturer publishes a glossary of the symbols on its monitors. A symbol described as the catalogue number identifies the model, and a separate serial number symbol identifies your individual unit. A factory icon marks the manufacturer, and a factory icon paired with a date shows when the device was made. An open book icon means consult the instructions for use. An umbrella with raindrops means keep the device dry, and a thermometer or percent symbol beside a range shows the temperature and humidity limits it can tolerate. A cuff symbol with a measurement range shows the arm circumferences that cuff is designed for.
Serial numbers sometimes carry useful information on their own. One manufacturer's manual explains that its serial numbers are built from the year, month, and day of manufacture followed by a unit number, so the first eight digits tell you when the device was made, which matters when you are judging how close it is to the end of its stated service life.
Photograph everything: the back label, the cuff label, the box if you still have it, and the receipt. If the label is worn, write the model number on a piece of tape on the underside of the unit and copy it into the front of your blood pressure log.
Where the manual lives online
Manufacturers generally post manuals as PDF files on the product page for each model. The path is similar across companies, though the wording varies. One large maker's support site asks you to choose a product category, then pick your exact model from a long list, then click a button labeled "View downloads." Its FAQ page confirms that electronic versions of its instruction manuals live in its online product support center. Another maker's FAQ gives this route: search your model in the search bar, click the matching product, and scroll to the Downloads tab to see the manual.
A few habits make this faster.
- Type the complete model number, including any letters at the beginning or end, rather than the series name. Two models that differ by one letter can have different cuffs and different manuals.
- Look for a document called the instruction manual or the instructions for use. Many product pages also offer a quick start guide, a warranty card, or a separate manual for a phone app. The quick start guide is handy, but the full manual is the one with the error code table, the cleaning rules, and the warranty terms.
- Check that the manual matches your unit before you rely on it. Compare the cuff range printed in the technical specifications with the range printed on your cuff. Manufacturers revise manuals, and a downloaded file can describe a later version of the same model.
- Save the file, not just the link. Some manufacturers deliver manuals through buttons that generate a changing link rather than a fixed web address, so a page you bookmark today may not open the same file next year. Save the PDF to your phone, to a computer, or to a cloud folder, and email a copy to yourself.
- Print the two or three pages you are most likely to need in a hurry: the error code table and the cleaning and storage section. Fold them and keep them in the monitor's case or the drawer where it lives.
If the manufacturer's site fails you, a general web search for the model number plus the words "instruction manual" often turns up the PDF by a different route. Be careful with third party manual libraries. They sometimes host outdated revisions, manuals for a different regional version of the device, or scans with missing pages. Check the document number or revision date, usually printed on the last page, against anything you can find on the official site.
When the website does not help
Manufacturers that sell monitors in the United States generally publish a consumer support phone number and hours. One large maker staffs its line Monday through Friday during Central Time business hours, and its FAQ says a representative will talk through the problem and help decide whether the device needs to be sent in for inspection. Another maker offers a phone number and a web contact form.
Before you call, have three things in front of you: the model number, the serial number, and the approximate purchase date. Then ask directly for what you need.
- Can you email me the instruction manual for this exact model?
- Which replacement cuff fits this unit, and what arm range does it cover?
- Does the company offer an accuracy check or recalibration service, what does it cost, and how do I send the device in?
- Is this model still supported, or has it been discontinued?
- What does the warranty cover, and what proof do I need to make a claim?
Product registration is worth doing while you are on the site or on the phone. It puts your model and serial number on file, which makes a later warranty conversation simpler and gives the company a way to reach you if it ever issues a notice about your model.
Store brands and unfamiliar names
Monitors sold under a pharmacy or retailer name are usually made by a different company. The label may show the retailer as the distributor and another company as the manufacturer, or it may show only the retailer. Two free federal databases can help you work out who made the device and find its regulatory record.
The first is AccessGUDID, run by the National Library of Medicine at the National Institutes of Health in partnership with the Food and Drug Administration. Medical devices sold in the United States carry a unique device identifier, or UDI, on the label and package in both plain text and barcode form. The FDA explains that the fixed part of a UDI identifies the company that labeled the device and the specific version or model, while a variable part can carry the lot number, serial number, or manufacturing date. AccessGUDID is a public database of that identification information, open to anyone, including consumers and care partners. You can search by device name, company, or the device identifier printed on your label.
The second is the FDA's 510(k) premarket notification database. Home blood pressure monitors are regulated as noninvasive blood pressure measurement systems under product code DXN, and most reach the market through a 510(k) submission, which the FDA defines as a showing that the new device is substantially equivalent to a device already legally on the market. The database can be searched by applicant name, device name, or product code, and each entry shows which company submitted the paperwork and when the FDA cleared it. That company is often the actual manufacturer behind a store brand, and its website is where the real manual usually lives.
One caution about vocabulary. The FDA uses the word "cleared" for devices that go through the 510(k) pathway, not "approved." Clearance means the device was judged comparable to an earlier device. It is not the same as independent validation of accuracy, which is a separate question that another article in this series covers.
What to look up once you have the manual
A home monitor manual can run dozens of pages, and much of it is safety boilerplate. These are the sections that change what you do.
- Intended use and age range. Manuals state who the device is meant for. One manufacturer's manual says its monitor is intended for people aged 12 years or older and is not intended for children under 12. The American Heart Association separately advises choosing a monitor validated for the person who will use it, including older adults and people who are pregnant. If you are buying for a teenager or during pregnancy, read this section first.
- Cuff range and fit check. The technical specifications list the arm circumference range for the included cuff, and the setup section explains the index mark. One maker's FAQ puts it plainly: wrap the cuff on your arm, and if the index mark points within the proper fit range, you are using the correct cuff size. Fit is not a small detail. In a randomized crossover trial published in JAMA Internal Medicine in 2023, a regular adult cuff used on people who needed an extra large cuff produced systolic readings about 19.5 mm Hg too high, and the same cuff on people who needed a small cuff produced readings about 3.6 mm Hg too low. - The error code table. Codes differ between brands, so the only reliable decoder is your own manual. A separate article in this series walks through troubleshooting.
- Cleaning and storage. Manufacturers disagree here. One manual allows a cloth dampened with water and a neutral detergent and bans alcohol, benzine, and thinner, while another says to clean the device only with a soft, dry cloth. Both give storage temperature and humidity limits. A separate article in this series covers cleaning and storage.
- Batteries and power. The manual lists the battery type and count, usually four AA cells, and states which adapter fits. Some manuals estimate how many readings a set of batteries will deliver; the two manuals reviewed for this article gave figures of about 700 and about 920 readings on alkaline cells.
- Accuracy check interval and service life. This is the section the American Heart Association and the 2025 guideline are pointing to when they say to follow the manufacturer's guidance. One manual recommends an accuracy test every 2 years or after the device has been dropped, and says to contact the company's service center to arrange it. Another lists a service life of 5 years for the monitor when used six times a day, 2 years for the cuff, and 5 years for the adapter. Some manuals give no interval at all, and in that case the AHA's suggestion of an annual check with your care team fills the gap.
- Warranty terms. Warranties are often stated only in the manual. One maker's warranty web page simply says to refer to the instruction manual for warranty information. The manuals and product pages reviewed for this article gave monitor warranties of 2 to 5 years and cuff warranties of 1 to 2 years. Both manuals required proof of the purchase date, one required the original invoice, and one required a return authorization number before the company would accept a shipment. Without the receipt and the manual, a warranty claim is hard to make.
- Cautions specific to blood pressure cuffs. Manuals commonly warn against placing the cuff on an arm with an unhealed wound or an arm receiving an intravenous drip, and they note that a very weak or irregular heartbeat can make it hard for the device to determine blood pressure.
- Memory, averaging, and the clock. The manual explains how many readings the device stores, whether it averages them, how to clear the memory, and how to set the date and time. Timestamps make stored readings far more useful to your health care professional, so check the clock after every battery change.
Keep a one page record with the monitor
Once you have the manual, spend ten minutes building a simple record and keep it with the device. Write down the model number, the serial number, the purchase date and store, the cuff range in centimeters and inches, the battery type, the manufacturer's support phone number, the warranty end dates for the monitor and the cuff, the date you last compared the device with the equipment at your health care professional's office, and where the manual is saved. Staple the receipt to it.
This record tells you when a warranty claim is still possible and when the manufacturer's accuracy check is due. It gives a family member or visiting nurse everything they need without a search. If you cannot find any instructions
Sometimes the trail goes cold. The label is worn off, the retailer brand no longer exists, and the databases turn up nothing. You can still take readings with the device, but you are then relying on a machine whose cuff range, accuracy tolerance, and service life you cannot confirm. The practical response is to bring it to your next appointment and compare it against the office equipment, and to check whether the model appears on the validated device listing at validatebp.org, which the 2025 guideline cites as the vetted list for the United States. If a monitor malfunctions in a way that could affect someone's care, consumers can report the problem to the FDA through MedWatch, the agency's safety reporting program for health professionals and the public, which accepts reports about medical device malfunctions. Having the model number, serial number, and manufacturer name at hand makes that report useful, which is one more reason the label photo you took at the start is worth the minute it cost.
