Bulk Valerian Root Extract for Supplement Manufacturing
Valerian root extract is a dry powder made from the root of Valeriana officinalis L., a perennial herb native to Europe and Asia. It is usually standardized to valerenic acids, measured by HPLC. We supply it in bulk to supplement brands, contract manufacturers, and formulators.
A root extract specified by valerenic acids, ratio, and odor
Valerian root extract is specified by its valerenic acid content, its extract ratio, and its odor profile. When all three match on every COA, you can compare lots and suppliers on the same terms.
Defined species and part
Valeriana officinalis L. root is the standard source for commercial extract. Other Valeriana species are traded too, so the species belongs on every specification.
Valerenic acids as markers
Valerenic acid and two related compounds, acetoxyvalerenic acid and hydroxyvalerenic acid, are the markers most specs name. All three are sesquiterpenic acids measured by HPLC.
A USP reference
The USP monograph for Powdered Valerian Extract describes a hydroalcoholic extract at a 4:1 to 7:1 ratio. It sets NLT 0.3% valerenic acid and NLT 0.6% total valerenic acids on an anhydrous basis.
Common market grades
Listings offer 0.4% and 0.8% grades by HPLC, and some go higher. Ask whether the figure is valerenic acid alone or total valerenic acids, because the two are reported differently.
A strong natural odor
Valerian root has a strong, characteristic odor that carries into the extract. Some suppliers sell deodorized grades for formulas where odor matters.
Fine, light brown powder
Spec sheets describe a light brown fine powder with NLT 95% through a 200 to 300 micron sieve. Many grades are dried onto maltodextrin at up to 30%.
Where formulators use valerian root extract
This extract fits measured formats where fill weight and serving size are controlled, including:
- Capsules
- Coated tablets
- Softgels, after suspension and stability trials
- Multiple ingredient botanical blends
- Stick packs and sachets, after odor and taste trials
- Private label programs
Plan fill weights from the confirmed assay on each COA. A 0.4% grade and a 0.8% grade are not interchangeable gram for gram, and carrier levels up to 30% change the math too. Recalculate whenever you change grade, ratio, or supplier.
What to check before you buy valerian root extract
Two powders sold as 0.8% valerian extract can differ in which acids they count, extract ratio, carrier, and odor. Review these points together, and ask for lot documents before you approve a supplier.
Species and plant part
Confirm Valeriana officinalis L. root on the specification and the certificate of analysis (COA). Other species, such as the Himalayan Valeriana jatamansi, are traded in the same markets.
Identity fingerprint
An HPLC or HPTLC fingerprint against a reference root confirms the species. Published multiwavelength HPLC fingerprints can pick up as little as 5% of a related herb.
Which acids are counted
Ask whether the grade counts valerenic acid alone or total valerenic acids. Also ask whether results are on an anhydrous or as is basis, as the USP uses the anhydrous basis.
Ratio, solvent, and carrier
The USP extract is hydroalcoholic at a 4:1 to 7:1 ratio. Some commercial grades run 8 to 10:1 with up to 30% maltodextrin, so confirm all three for each lot.
Odor and deodorized grades
Ask for an odor description and whether the grade is deodorized. Keep a retained sample from your approved lot so you can compare odor on each new delivery.
Contaminant limits
Check heavy metals by ICP-MS, microbial limits by USP methods, pesticide residues, and residual ethanol. Compare each limit with your own finished product specification.
Label math: If your label lists valerenic acids per serving, say whether the figure is valerenic acid or total valerenic acids. Keep that choice the same from lot to lot. Base the number on each lot's measured assay and your own finished product testing.
Typical specification for valerian root extract
These values reflect the common 0.8% valerenic acid grade. Final figures come from the specification sheet and COA for your lot. NLT means not less than, and NMT means not more than.

Storage and handling for bulk valerian extract
Valerian extract is sensitive to moisture, which can change its flow and loss on drying. These habits help you keep quality steady across several production runs.
Keep it sealed
Close the inner liner after each use and press out the air. The extract picks up moisture from the air and can cake when left open.
Store cool and dry
Keep bags off the floor in a dry room, away from heat sources. Follow the temperature range on the spec sheet.
Contain the odor
Store bags in a closed outer container, apart from ingredients that can take on odors. Valerian's smell travels and can transfer to open powders nearby.
Rotate stock
Record the lot number and retest date for each bag. Send older lots to production first.
Valerian root extract buyer FAQ
Quick answers to the questions procurement and quality teams ask most.
What is valerian root extract standardized to?
Valerian root extract is usually standardized to valerenic acids, measured by HPLC. Common grades are 0.4% and 0.8%. The USP monograph for Powdered Valerian Extract sets NLT 0.3% valerenic acid and NLT 0.6% total valerenic acids.
What is the difference between valerenic acid and total valerenic acids?
Valerenic acid is a single compound, while total valerenic acids also count acetoxyvalerenic and hydroxyvalerenic acids. On the same lot, the total reads higher than valerenic acid alone. Ask which figure your COA reports.
Why does valerian extract smell so strong?
Valerian root has a strong natural odor, and the extract keeps much of it. Some suppliers offer deodorized grades. Coated tablets, capsules, and sealed packaging keep the odor contained in finished products.
What extract ratio does the USP describe?
The USP monograph describes a hydroalcoholic extract made at 4 to 7 parts root to 1 part extract. Commercial grades outside that range exist, such as 8 to 10:1 on a maltodextrin carrier. Confirm the native ratio on your spec sheet.
What documents can I get with an order?
A certificate of analysis (COA) and a specification sheet ship with every order. An allergen statement and a safety data sheet may also be available, depending on the lot in inventory. Contact us to request them.
Can I get a sample before a bulk order?
You can request one by choosing sample options on the quote form. We will confirm availability, size, and timing.
How should I store an opened bag?
Close the liner, press out the air, and keep the bag in a cool, dry place inside a closed outer container. Use the powder within the shelf life shown on the COA.
