Bulk Soy Protein Isolate Powder for Supplement and Food Manufacturing

Soy protein isolate is a fine, off white powder made from dehulled, defatted soybeans (Glycine max (L.) Merr.), with protein stated at 90% or more on a moisture free basis. It is made by dissolving the protein out of defatted soy flakes, separating it from the fiber, then drying it. Soy is a major food allergen in the US, so finished labels must declare it. We supply it in bulk to supplement brands, contract manufacturers, and food formulators. You can request testing documents and samples on the quote form.

Source Soybeans, Glycine max (L.) Merr.
Typical grade NLT 90% protein (N x 6.25, dry basis)
Allergen status Contains soy, a major US food allergen
Pack sizes 5 lb, 11 lb, 25 lb, and 55 lb
Why Soy Protein Isolate

A plant protein with a clear grade system and known label rules

Soy protein isolate is sold on a stated protein number with standard test methods. Makers also sell types that differ in viscosity, density, and dispersibility. That lets you match the grade to your format and compare suppliers on the same footing.

A defined protein level

Isolates are sold at 90% or more protein on a moisture free basis. Protein is measured as nitrogen multiplied by 6.25, usually by Kjeldahl or Dumas combustion.

A simple grade ladder

Defatted soy flour runs about 50 to 54% protein, and soy protein concentrate about 65 to 70%. Isolate sits at the top, so less powder delivers the same protein grams.

Isolate types for each format

Makers sell isolates by viscosity, dispersibility, density, and solubility, plus hydrolyzed grades. Low viscosity types suit shakes, and high density types suit bars and tablets.

Water based isolation

The protein is dissolved out of defatted flakes in mildly alkaline water and separated from fiber by centrifuge. It is then recovered and spray dried. The flakes are usually defatted with hexane, so ask about the solvent.

Neutral color and taste

Good lots are off white to cream with a neutral taste and little odor. Fine grades pass a 100 mesh screen almost completely, which suits drink mixes and scoop filled tubs.

Allergen and GMO paperwork

Soy is a declared major allergen in the US, so the label rule is settled. Buyers who need non-GMO material ask for identity preserved documents that track the beans from field to plant.

Formulation Uses

Where formulators use soy protein isolate

Soy protein isolate fits powder, bar, and food formats where protein grams per serving are measured, including:

  • Protein powders
  • Powdered drink mixes
  • Sports nutrition powders
  • Meal replacement shakes
  • Protein bars
  • Compressed tablets
  • Plant based beverages
  • Baked goods and snacks
  • Plant based meat alternatives
  • Private label programs

Pick the isolate type before you pick the supplier. A low viscosity isolate made for shakes can feel thin in a bar, and a high density bar grade can thicken a drink. Base your protein math on the protein result and basis shown on each COA.

What Commercial Buyers Should Review

What to check before you buy soy protein isolate

Two powders sold as 90% soy protein can differ in basis, isolate type, GMO status, and allergen paperwork. Review these points together, and ask for lot documents before you approve a supplier.

Protein basis and method

Ask for protein as N x 6.25 on a dry basis, with the method named. A figure labeled 'assay' or 'purity' with no basis is not a protein result.

Isolate type

Ask for viscosity, dispersibility, and solubility data, or the maker's grade description. Match the type to your format before you compare prices.

Non-GMO documents

If your label or customer needs non-GMO, ask for the identity preserved certificate chain and a PCR test result for the lot. A non-GMO line on a spec sheet is not proof on its own.

Allergen statement

Ask for a written allergen statement that names soy and lists any other major allergens handled on the same lines. Check it against your own allergen controls.

Solvent and added aids

Ask how the flakes were defatted, and whether lecithin or another processing aid was added for dispersibility. Request residual solvent results if your brand specifies them.

Metals, micro, and origin

Ask for measured lead and cadmium by ICP-MS, microbial results, and the countries where the beans were grown and processed. Spec limits differ widely between makers.

Serving math: Protein powders are used at 20 to 30 g per serving, so small ppm figures add up. At a 30 g serving, each 0.1 ppm of lead equals 3 micrograms per serving. Use measured lot results and your own finished product testing to set your limit.

Specification

Typical specification for soy protein isolate

These values reflect a common 90% isolate grade. Final figures come from the specification sheet and COA for your lot. NLT means not less than, and NMT means not more than.

Storage & Handling

Storage and handling for bulk soy protein

Protein powders keep well when they stay sealed, dry, and away from strong odors. Soy also needs allergen controls in your plant, so plan storage and cleaning around it.

Keep it sealed

Close the inner liner after each use and press out the air. Protein powder picks up moisture from the air and can clump when left open.

Store cool and dry

Keep bags off the floor in a dry room, away from heat and large swings in humidity. Follow the temperature range on the spec sheet.

Separate allergen stock

Store soy apart from materials for soy free products and mark each bag with an allergen tag. Clean scoops, blenders, and fillers between soy runs and soy free runs.

Control dust and rotate stock

Scoop gently and use local dust extraction at the blending station. Record the lot number and retest date for each bag, and use older lots first.

Buyer FAQ

Soy protein isolate buyer FAQ

Quick answers to the questions procurement and quality teams ask most.

What is the difference between soy protein isolate and concentrate?

The difference is protein level. Isolates contain 90% or more protein on a moisture free basis, while concentrates contain about 65 to 70%. Concentrates keep more of the soybean's fiber, so isolates are the usual pick for protein powders.

How is the protein percentage measured?

Protein is measured as total nitrogen multiplied by 6.25, using the Kjeldahl or Dumas method. Check whether the COA reports it on a dry basis or as is, because the as is figure includes the moisture in the powder.

Is soy a major food allergen?

Yes. Soy is one of the nine major food allergens under US law, so finished products must declare it on the label. Ask for the allergen statement and cross contact details for each lot.

Is your soy protein isolate non-GMO?

Non-GMO status depends on the lot and must be backed by documents for that lot. Non-GMO isolate comes from identity preserved soybeans that stay separate from field to plant and are checked by PCR testing. Non-GMO and identity preservation documents may be available depending on the lot, so please confirm with us before you order.

Is soy protein isolate made with hexane?

Most soy protein starts from soybean flakes defatted with hexane, and the isolate itself is then made in water. Ask for the defatting method and residual solvent results if your brand specifies them.

Which grade suits powdered drinks?

Low viscosity, readily dispersible grades are the usual choice for shakes and drink mixes. High density grades with low water binding suit bars and tablets. Test a sample in your own base before you scale up.

What documents can I get with an order?

A certificate of analysis (COA) and a specification sheet ship with every order. An allergen statement and a safety data sheet may also be available, depending on the lot in inventory. Contact us to request them.

Can I get a sample before a bulk order?

You can request one by choosing sample options on the quote form. We will confirm availability, size, and timing.
