Bulk Saffron Extract for Supplement Manufacturing

Saffron extract is a dry powder made from the dried red stigmas of the saffron crocus, Crocus sativus L. It is graded by crocins, measured by HPLC, and by safranal, measured by UV or HPLC. We supply it in bulk to supplement brands, contract manufacturers, and formulators.

Botanical name Crocus sativus L.
Plant part Stigma
Typical grade 3% crocins (HPLC), 1% safranal
Pack sizes 5 lb, 11 lb, 25 lb, and 55 lb
Why Saffron Extract

A stigma extract with three named marker compounds

Saffron has a clear chemical profile and a published trade standard. Each marker ties to a property you can see, taste, or smell, which makes lot checks practical for buyers and quality teams.

Stigma only

Saffron is the dried red stigma of the Crocus sativus flower. Petals, whole flowers, and the yellow style are different materials with a different profile.

Three named markers

Crocins give saffron its color, picrocrocin its bitter taste, and safranal its aroma. Specifications name one or more of them with a stated method.

A published trade standard

ISO 3632 grades dried saffron spice by UV-Vis for color, bitterness, and aroma. Extract grades usually rely on HPLC, which measures single compounds.

A range of grades

Suppliers list crocins up to 7.5% by HPLC and safranal up to 3% by UV. A grade of 3% crocins with 1% safranal by HPLC is also offered.

Water soluble color

Crocins dissolve in water and give an orange red color. Plan for that color in drink mixes, gummies, and clear capsules.

Several growing regions

Suppliers list origins across Europe, Asia, and North Africa, including Spain, Greece, and Morocco. Harvest runs from October to December, so lot timing follows the crop year.

Formulation Uses

Where formulators use saffron extract

Saffron extract is used at small fill weights in measured formats, including:

  • Capsules
  • Compressed tablets
  • Multiple ingredient botanical blends
  • Powdered drink mixes
  • Functional beverages, after color and stability trials
  • Gummies, after color and stability trials
  • Stick packs and sachets
  • Private label programs

Saffron extract is used in milligram amounts, so blend uniformity matters. Premix it with a carrier before adding it to a large batch. Plan fill weights from the confirmed crocin and safranal values on each COA.

What Commercial Buyers Should Review

What to check before you buy saffron extract

Saffron is a high value crop, so identity and purity checks deserve the most attention. Review these points together, and ask for lot documents before you approve a supplier.

Stigma on every document

Confirm Crocus sativus L. stigma on the specification and the certificate of analysis (COA). Petal, flower, and style extracts are different materials.

Identity by HPLC fingerprint

An HPLC profile of crocins and picrocrocin compared with a reference standard confirms saffron. A UV-Vis grade under ISO 3632 measures color, taste, and aroma compounds, but it cannot name a foreign plant.

Purity screens

Ask for tests that rule out added colorants and other plants, such as safflower, marigold, and turmeric. HPLC with a diode array detector or a DNA test can name them.

Marker, method, and basis

Crocins are usually measured by HPLC, and safranal by UV or HPLC. A UV value and an HPLC value are not comparable, so compare grades only within one method.

Solvent, ratio, and carrier

Confirm whether the extract is made with water or ethanol and water. Ask whether a carrier, such as maltodextrin, is added to reach the stated grade.

Country of harvest

Ask for the country where the saffron was grown as well as the country of extraction. US import rules depend on the country of origin, so keep origin documents in your supplier file.

Origin documents: Ask for a country of origin statement for each lot that names where the stigmas were harvested. Your customs broker can then confirm that the origin meets current US import rules before you place a bulk order.

Specification

Typical specification for saffron extract

These values reflect common supplier grades for saffron stigma extract. Final figures come from the specification sheet and COA for your lot. NLT means not less than, and NMT means not more than.

Storage & Handling

Storage and handling for bulk saffron extract

Saffron color and aroma compounds change with light, heat, and air. These steps keep the powder in good condition between production runs.

Keep it sealed

Close the foil bag after each use and press out the air. Extract powders pick up moisture from the air and can cake when left open.

Keep away from light

Leave the powder in its original foil packaging. Crocins fade with light exposure, which shifts color and assay values.

Store cool and dry

Keep bags in a cool, dry room away from heat sources. Safranal is the aroma compound, and heat can drive it off over time.

Track small lots

Saffron extract often ships in small bags. Record the lot number, grade, and retest date for each bag, and send older lots to production first.

Buyer FAQ

Saffron extract buyer FAQ

Quick answers to the questions procurement and quality teams ask most.

What is saffron extract standardized to?

Saffron extract is standardized to crocins, safranal, or both. Crocins are usually measured by HPLC and safranal by UV or HPLC. Ask which method each value on the COA uses.

Is saffron extract made from the stigma or the petals?

True saffron extract is made from the stigma, the dried red threads of the flower. Petal and whole flower extracts are different materials. Your specification and COA should both say stigma.

What is ISO 3632?

ISO 3632 is the international trade standard for dried saffron spice. It grades color, bitterness, and aroma by UV-Vis, which tracks crocins, picrocrocin, and safranal. Extract grades usually use HPLC instead.

How do you test saffron extract for identity and purity?

An HPLC fingerprint of crocins and picrocrocin confirms saffron. Purity screens check for added colorants and other plants such as safflower, marigold, and turmeric. HPLC with a diode array detector or a DNA test can name them.

Is saffron extract water soluble?

Yes. Crocins dissolve in water and give an orange red color. That makes saffron extract easy to disperse in drink mixes, but it will tint the finished product.

Is this a branded saffron extract?

No. Branded saffron extracts are trademarked ingredients sold by their owners under their own specifications. This listing is a saffron stigma extract sold under its own grade and COA.

What documents can I get with an order?

A certificate of analysis (COA) and a specification sheet ship with every order. An allergen statement and a safety data sheet may also be available, depending on the lot in inventory. Contact us to request them.

Can I get a sample before a bulk order?

You can request one by choosing sample options on the quote form. We will confirm availability, size, and timing.
