Bulk Pine Bark Extract Powder for Supplement Manufacturing

Pine bark extract is a dry powder made from the bark of pine trees, most often maritime pine (Pinus pinaster) or Masson pine (Pinus massoniana). It is standardized to procyanidins, measured by UV or another stated method. We supply it in bulk to supplement brands, contract manufacturers, and formulators, with lot documents for your quality team.

Why Pine Bark Extract

A bark extract you specify by species and procyanidin grade

Pine bark extract is easy to specify once you know the species. Each common grade has a stated procyanidin minimum and a named test method. USP publishes identity tests for maritime pine bark, which gives your quality team a public reference.

Species on the label

Two pines supply most of the market. Maritime pine (Pinus pinaster) is harvested in the Landes forest of southwest France, among other places. Masson pine (Pinus massoniana) is native to central and southern China.

Procyanidins as the marker

Procyanidins are chains of catechin and epicatechin units. Short chains of two to five units are called oligomeric proanthocyanidins, or OPCs.

Grades follow the species

Maritime pine extracts are commonly sold at about 70% procyanidins. Masson pine extracts are commonly listed at 95% proanthocyanidins, so compare species before you compare grades.

Identity by fingerprint

The USP identity test for maritime pine bark is a TLC fingerprint. It shows catechin, procyanidin dimers, and phenolic acids such as caffeic and ferulic acid.

Fine, water soluble powder

Pine bark extract is a fine brownish red powder that dissolves in water. Most spec sheets call for 95% through an 80 mesh screen, which suits capsule filling and dry blending.

Bitter, astringent taste

Like other procyanidin extracts, pine bark extract tastes bitter and astringent. Plan for it in drink mixes and gummies. It is much less of an issue in capsules and tablets.

Formulation Uses

Where formulators use pine bark extract

This extract fits measured formats where fill weight and serving size are controlled, including:

  • Capsules
  • Compressed tablets
  • Single ingredient powders
  • Multiple ingredient botanical blends
  • Stick packs and sachets
  • Powdered drink mixes, after taste trials
  • Gummies, after taste and stability trials
  • Private label programs

Plan fill weights from the confirmed assay on each COA. A 70% maritime pine extract and a 95% Masson pine extract are not interchangeable gram for gram. Recalculate your serving math whenever you change species or grade.

What Commercial Buyers Should Review

What to check before you buy pine bark extract

Two powders sold as pine bark extract can differ in species, assay method, and solvent. Review these points together, and ask for lot documents before you approve a supplier.

Species and plant part

Confirm the pine species and bark as the plant part on both the specification and the certificate of analysis (COA). Ask for the country where the bark was harvested and where it was extracted.

Assay method and basis

Ask whether procyanidins are measured by UV, GPC, or the USP color assay, and whether results are on a dry or as is basis. Each method gives a different number for the same powder.

Identity fingerprint

Ask for a TLC or HPTLC fingerprint compared with a reference standard for the stated species. Grape seed and peanut skin extracts carry similar compounds, so a fingerprint is the reliable check.

Name and trademark

Branded pine bark extracts are sold under trademarks owned by their makers. Sell a generic extract under its common name, and keep brand names off your label and listings.

Solvent and carrier

Confirm the extraction solvent and the residual solvent result. Ask whether any carrier, such as maltodextrin, is added to reach the stated grade.

Contaminant limits

Check heavy metals by ICP-MS, microbial limits by USP methods, and pesticide residues. Compare each limit with your own finished product specification.

Label math: If your label lists procyanidins per serving, base the number on each lot's measured assay and your own finished product testing. State the species on your label as well, because it is part of the ingredient's identity.

Specification

Typical specification for pine bark extract

These values reflect common market grades from published spec sheets. Final figures come from the specification sheet and COA for your lot. NLT means not less than, and NMT means not more than.

Storage & Handling

Storage and handling for bulk pine bark extract

Bark extracts keep best when they stay sealed, dry, and out of light. These steps keep the powder in good condition between production runs.

Keep it sealed

Close the inner liner after each use and press out the air. The powder picks up moisture from the air and can cake when left open.

Store cool and dry

Keep bags off the floor in a dry room, away from heat sources. Follow the temperature range on the spec sheet.

Keep away from light

Leave the powder in its original opaque, tightly closed packaging. Light, air, and heat can shift color and assay over time.

Rotate stock

Record the lot number and retest date for each bag. Send older lots to production first.

Buyer FAQ

Pine bark extract buyer FAQ

Quick answers to the questions procurement and quality teams ask most.

Which pine species is used for pine bark extract?

Most bulk pine bark extract comes from maritime pine (Pinus pinaster) or Masson pine (Pinus massoniana). The species should appear on both the specification and the COA.

What is the difference between 70% and 95% pine bark extract?

The two grades usually come from different species and are often measured by different methods. Maritime pine extracts are commonly sold near 70% procyanidins, and Masson pine extracts near 95%. Compare species and method before you compare price per kg.

Is pine bark extract the same as grape seed extract?

No. Both contain procyanidins, but they come from different plants and give different fingerprints. Pine bark also carries phenolic acids such as caffeic and ferulic acid, which TLC identity tests look for.

Can I use a brand name for a generic pine bark extract?

No. Branded pine bark extracts are trademarks of the companies that make them. Label and list a generic extract under its common name, such as pine bark extract or maritime pine bark extract.

What documents can I get with an order?

Select testing documents on the quote form and we will send what is available for the lot.

Can I get a sample before a bulk order?

Yes. Choose sample options on the quote form and we will confirm size and timing.

How should I store an opened bag?

Close the liner, press out the air, and keep the bag in a cool, dry place away from light. Use the powder within the shelf life shown on the COA.
