Bulk L-Tyrosine Powder for Supplement Manufacturing

L-tyrosine is a free form amino acid powder made by microbial fermentation or other industrial routes, sold as fine white crystals (CAS 60-18-4). It is a different compound from N-acetyl-L-tyrosine. We supply it in bulk to supplement brands, contract manufacturers, and formulators. You can request testing documents and samples on the quote form.

Chemical name L-tyrosine (CAS 60-18-4)
Source Microbial fermentation, no animal derived raw materials
Typical assay 98.5 to 101.5% (dried basis)
Pack sizes 5 lb, 11 lb, 25 lb, and 55 lb
Why Free Form L-Tyrosine

A single amino acid with a clear specification

L-tyrosine is easy to specify. It is one named compound with a CAS number, a USP grade market, and standard tests for identity and purity. That makes lot to lot comparison simple for buyers and quality teams.

One named compound

L-tyrosine has the formula C9H11NO3 and a molecular weight of 181.19. It is sold without a salt partner, so a 99% assay means about 99% of the powder is tyrosine.

Optical identity you can check

Specific rotation confirms the L-form. Published specifications call for about −9.8° to −11.2°, and a racemic DL material would read near zero.

Not the same as NALT

N-acetyl-L-tyrosine (CAS 537-55-3) is a separate compound with an acetyl group added. By weight it is about 81% tyrosine, so the two are not swapped gram for gram.

Low water solubility

L-tyrosine dissolves poorly in plain water and stays as a fine suspension. That suits capsules, tablets, and dry blends, while drink mixes need suspension trials.

White crystals for dry blending

Good lots are white crystalline powder or fine needles. Ask for the mesh size that suits your capsule filler or tablet press.

A listed food additive

21 CFR 172.320 lists L-tyrosine for use in conventional foods, up to 4.3% of total protein, with Food Chemicals Codex specs. Dietary supplements follow separate rules.

Formulation Uses

Where formulators use L-tyrosine powder

Free form L-tyrosine fits measured formats where fill weight and serving size are controlled, including:

  • Capsules
  • Compressed tablets
  • Single ingredient powders
  • Multiple ingredient amino acid blends
  • Sports nutrition powders
  • Stick packs and sachets
  • Powdered drink mixes, after suspension trials
  • Private label programs

Plan fill weights from the confirmed assay on each COA. L-tyrosine and N-acetyl-L-tyrosine are not interchangeable gram for gram, so recalculate your serving math whenever you switch forms.

What Commercial Buyers Should Review

What to check before you buy L-tyrosine

Powders sold as tyrosine can differ in compound, source, purity limits, and how carefully the spec was written. Review these points together, and ask for lot documents before you approve a supplier.

L-tyrosine or NALT

Confirm that the specification and certificate of analysis (COA) both name L-tyrosine, CAS 60-18-4. N-acetyl-L-tyrosine, CAS 537-55-3, is often listed beside it under similar names.

Specific rotation

Check that the rotation falls inside the stated range, often −9.8° to −11.2°. It is the quickest paper check that you are buying the L-form.

Production route

Ask whether the lot was made by fermentation or by another route, and what raw materials went in. Vegan and animal origin statements depend on the answer.

A spec written for amino acids

Amino acid sheets usually set loss on drying near 0.3%. A 5% limit or a 100,000 cfu/g plate count points to a botanical template, so ask for a corrected spec.

Other amino acids

Ask for the result for other amino acids and related substances by chromatography. Good sheets report them as not detectable or give a single impurity limit.

Contaminant limits

Check lead, arsenic, cadmium, and mercury by ICP-MS, plus microbial limits by USP methods. Compare each limit with your own finished product specification.

Label math: If you move a formula from N-acetyl-L-tyrosine to L-tyrosine, the gram weight changes. For example, 500 mg of tyrosine from NALT takes about 616 mg of NALT powder. Free form L-tyrosine at a 99% assay takes about 505 mg.

Specification

Typical specification for L-tyrosine

These values reflect published USP grade specifications. Final figures come from the specification sheet and COA for your lot. NLT means not less than, and NMT means not more than.

Storage & Handling

Storage and handling for bulk L-tyrosine

Amino acid powders stay in good condition when they are sealed, dry, and at room temperature. These steps keep the powder in good condition between production runs.

Keep it sealed

Close the inner liner after each use and press out the air. An open bag can pick up moisture in a humid room and start to clump.

Store cool and dry

Keep bags off the floor in a dry room, away from heat and direct sunlight. Follow the temperature range on the spec sheet.

Control fine dust

Fine crystals can drift when you scoop or pour. Use local dust extraction and the protective equipment listed on the safety data sheet.

Rotate stock

Record the lot number and retest date for each bag. Send older lots to production first.

Buyer FAQ

L-tyrosine buyer FAQ

Quick answers to the questions procurement and quality teams ask most.

What is the difference between L-tyrosine and N-acetyl-L-tyrosine?

L-tyrosine is the amino acid on its own, while N-acetyl-L-tyrosine (NALT) has an acetyl group attached. NALT is about 81% tyrosine by weight and dissolves more readily in water. This page covers free form L-tyrosine only.

Does L-tyrosine dissolve in water?

Only poorly. Published sheets describe L-tyrosine as very slightly soluble in plain water, so it stays as a fine suspension. Capsules, tablets, and dry blends are the easiest formats, and drink mixes need your own suspension trials.

What specific rotation should L-tyrosine have?

Published specifications call for about −9.8° to −11.2°. A result inside that range confirms the L-form, while a racemic DL material would read near zero.

How is L-tyrosine made?

L-tyrosine is made by microbial fermentation or by older extraction and synthesis routes, then purified and crystallized. Ask your supplier to name the route and any animal derived raw material.

Is there a USP monograph for tyrosine?

Yes. USP grade L-tyrosine is sold against the USP monograph, and spec sheets use its assay and rotation ranges. Ask whether your lot is tested against it.

What documents can I get with an order?

A certificate of analysis (COA) and a specification sheet ship with every order. An allergen statement and a safety data sheet may also be available, depending on the lot in inventory. Contact us to request them.

Can I get a sample before a bulk order?

You can request one by choosing sample options on the quote form. We will confirm availability, size, and timing.
