Bulk L-Lysine HCl Powder for Supplement Manufacturing

L-lysine HCl is a white crystalline amino acid powder made by microbial fermentation and supplied as the hydrochloride salt, L-lysine monohydrochloride (CAS 657-27-2). It is about 80% L-lysine by weight. We supply it in bulk to supplement brands, contract manufacturers, and formulators. You can request testing documents and samples on the quote form.

Chemical name L-lysine monohydrochloride (CAS 657-27-2)
Lysine content About 80.0% L-lysine by weight (calculated)
Typical assay 98.5 to 101.5% (dried basis)
Pack sizes 5 lb, 11 lb, 25 lb, and 55 lb
Why L-Lysine HCl

The stable, easy to specify form of lysine

L-lysine HCl is the form most supplement specs are written around. It has a CAS number, a USP monograph, and two simple paper checks for identity. That makes lot to lot comparison simple for buyers and quality teams.

A stable salt form

The free base picks up moisture and carbon dioxide from the air, which makes it hard to handle. The hydrochloride salt is a dry, stable crystal that suits capsules, tablets, and powders.

A USP monograph to work from

USP-NF includes a monograph for lysine hydrochloride, and EP and JP have their own. Multicompendial lots are tested against all three.

Two identity checks on paper

Specific rotation, about +20.4° to +21.4°, confirms the L-form. Chloride content, about 19.0 to 19.6%, confirms the monohydrochloride salt.

White powder that dissolves clear

Good lots are white and crystalline. Published sheets call it freely soluble in water and practically insoluble in ethanol.

Fermentation source

Commercial L-lysine is made by microbial fermentation, then purified and crystallized as the HCl salt. Ask your supplier to name the organism and the feedstock.

Simple label math

One gram of L-lysine HCl at a 100% assay holds about 0.80 g of lysine. Work from the measured assay on each COA when you set label amounts.

Formulation Uses

Where formulators use L-lysine HCl

L-lysine HCl fits measured formats where fill weight and serving size are controlled, including:

  • Capsules
  • Compressed tablets
  • Single ingredient powders
  • Multiple ingredient amino acid blends
  • Powdered drink mixes
  • Stick packs and sachets
  • Chewable tablets, after taste trials
  • Private label programs

Plan fill weights from the confirmed assay on each COA. L-lysine base and L-lysine HCl are not interchangeable gram for gram, so recalculate your serving math whenever you switch forms.

What Commercial Buyers Should Review

What to check before you buy L-lysine

Powders sold as lysine can differ in form, grade, purity limits, and intended market. Review these points together, and ask for lot documents before you approve a supplier.

Base or HCl

Confirm the form on both the specification and the certificate of analysis (COA). L-lysine HCl is CAS 657-27-2, and the free base is CAS 56-87-1.

Assay and basis

A typical limit is 98.5 to 101.5% on a dried basis. Ask which method the lab used and whether the lot was tested against the USP monograph.

Rotation and chloride

Check that specific rotation and chloride content both fall inside the stated ranges. Together they confirm the L-form and the salt.

Food grade, not feed grade

Lysine HCl is also made in large volumes for animal feed, under the same name and CAS number. Ask for a statement that your lot was made and packed for food or supplement use.

Impurities and metals

Food grade sheets set total related substances at NMT 1.0%, while some feed sheets allow 2.0%. Ask for lead, arsenic, cadmium, and mercury by ICP-MS as well.

Strain and feedstock

Ask what organism makes the lysine and what it is fed. Any non-GMO, vegan, or allergen statement should cover both.

Label math: To deliver 1,000 mg of L-lysine, you need about 1,250 mg of L-lysine HCl at a 100% assay. At a 99.0% assay, plan about 1,262 mg, and confirm with your own finished product testing.

Specification

Typical specification for L-lysine HCl

These values reflect published USP, EP, and JP grade specifications. Final figures come from the specification sheet and COA for your lot. NLT means not less than, and NMT means not more than.

Storage & Handling

Storage and handling for bulk L-lysine HCl

Amino acid powders stay in good condition when they are sealed, dry, and at room temperature. These steps keep the powder in good condition between production runs.

Keep it sealed

Close the inner liner after each use and press out the air. An open bag can pick up moisture in a humid room and start to clump.

Store dry at room temperature

Keep bags off the floor in a dry, well ventilated room, away from heat sources. Follow the temperature range on the spec sheet.

Keep the base form tightly closed

If you also stock L-lysine base, keep it in airtight containers. The base picks up moisture and carbon dioxide much faster than the HCl salt.

Rotate stock

Record the lot number and retest date for each bag. Send older lots to production first.

Buyer FAQ

L-lysine HCl buyer FAQ

Quick answers to the questions procurement and quality teams ask most.

What is the difference between L-lysine base and L-lysine HCl?

L-lysine HCl is lysine bound to hydrochloric acid as a stable salt, while the base is lysine on its own. The base picks up moisture and carbon dioxide from the air. That is why most supplement specs use the HCl form.

How much lysine is in L-lysine HCl?

L-lysine HCl is about 80.0% lysine by weight. The figure comes from the molecular weights, 146.19 for lysine and 182.65 for the HCl salt. Multiply by the assay on the COA for the exact amount.

Is there a USP monograph for lysine hydrochloride?

Yes. USP-NF publishes a lysine hydrochloride monograph, and EP and JP have their own. Ask whether your lot is tested against it.

Is feed grade lysine the same as food grade lysine?

No. Both are L-lysine HCl, but feed grade lots are made and packed for animal feed and often carry looser impurity and metals limits. Ask for a food or supplement grade statement on every lot.

How is L-lysine made?

L-lysine is made by microbial fermentation, then purified and crystallized as the HCl salt. Ask your supplier to name the organism and the feedstock.

Does L-lysine HCl dissolve in water?

Yes. Published specifications describe it as freely soluble in water, and good lots dissolve to a clear, colorless solution. Run your own trial at your target concentration.

What documents can I get with an order?

A certificate of analysis (COA) and a specification sheet ship with every order. An allergen statement and a safety data sheet may also be available, depending on the lot in inventory. Contact us to request them.

Can I get a sample before a bulk order?

You can request one by choosing sample options on the quote form. We will confirm availability, size, and timing.
