Bulk L-Leucine Powder for Supplement Manufacturing

L-leucine is a free form amino acid powder made by microbial fermentation of plant sugars and purified to white crystals (CAS 61-90-5). This listing is L-leucine on its own, not a BCAA blend. We supply it in bulk to supplement brands, contract manufacturers, and formulators. You can request testing documents and samples on the quote form.

Chemical name L-leucine (CAS 61-90-5)
Source Fermentation of plant sugars, no animal derived raw materials
Typical assay 98.5 to 101.5% (dried basis), plain grade
Pack sizes 5 lb, 11 lb, 25 lb, and 55 lb
Why Single Ingredient L-Leucine

One amino acid you can specify and blend on your own terms

Buying L-leucine on its own lets you set your own ratios and fill weights. It is one named compound with a CAS number, pharmacopeia monographs, and standard tests for identity and purity. That makes lot to lot comparison simple for buyers and quality teams.

One named compound

L-leucine has the formula C6H13NO2 and a molecular weight of 131.17. It is sold here on its own, so the COA covers one amino acid rather than a blend ratio.

Optical identity you can check

Specific rotation confirms the L-form. A published USP, EP, and JP grade sheet calls for +14.9° to +17.3° at 25 °C.

Plain or instantized

Plain crystals tend to float and clump in cold liquids. Instantized grades are agglomerated with a small amount of dispersing agent, often sunflower lecithin, so they wet and mix faster.

Fermentation source

Commercial L-leucine is made by fermenting plant sugars such as corn starch, sugarcane, or molasses. It is then purified, filtered, crystallized, and dried.

Three pharmacopeias

USP, EP, and JP each publish a leucine monograph. Multicompendial lots are tested against all three, which helps if you sell in several markets.

A listed food additive

21 CFR 172.320 lists L-leucine for US conventional foods at up to 8.8% of total protein, with Food Chemicals Codex specs. Dietary supplements follow separate rules.

Formulation Uses

Where formulators use L-leucine powder

L-leucine fits measured formats where fill weight and serving size are controlled, including:

  • Sports nutrition powders
  • Protein powders
  • Powdered drink mixes, usually with an instantized grade
  • Single ingredient powders
  • Amino acid blends you build in house
  • Stick packs and sachets
  • Capsules
  • Compressed tablets
  • Private label programs

Plan fill weights from the confirmed assay on each COA. Plain, instantized, and granulated grades carry different assays, so recalculate your serving math whenever you change grade or supplier.

What Commercial Buyers Should Review

What to check before you buy L-leucine

Powders sold as leucine can differ in grade, added carriers, source, and purity limits. Review these points together, and ask for lot documents before you approve a supplier.

Single amino acid, not a blend

Confirm that the specification and certificate of analysis (COA) both name L-leucine only, CAS 61-90-5. BCAA blends are separate products with their own ratio and assay.

Plain, instantized, or granulated

Ask which grade you are quoted. Granulated grades can include a binder such as HPMC and carry an assay near 95%, while plain crystals run near 99%.

Lecithin source and allergens

Instantized grades usually contain lecithin. Ask whether it is sunflower or soy, since soy is a major food allergen that your label must declare.

Source and animal origin

Ask whether the lot was made by fermentation of plant sugars or by another route, such as protein hydrolysis. Vegan and animal origin statements depend on the answer.

Assay and rotation

A typical plain grade limit is 98.5 to 101.5% on a dried basis, with rotation inside the stated range. Check both on every COA.

Contaminant limits

Check lead, arsenic, cadmium, and mercury by ICP-MS, plus microbial limits by USP methods. Compare each limit with your own finished product specification.

Label math: Grades with lecithin or binder hold less leucine per gram than plain crystals. For example, 5.0 g of a 95% granulated grade holds about 4.75 g of leucine, while 5.0 g of a 99% plain grade holds about 4.95 g.

Specification

Typical specification for L-leucine

These values reflect a published USP, EP, and JP grade specification for plain crystals. Final figures come from the specification sheet and COA for your lot. NLT means not less than, and NMT means not more than.

Storage & Handling

Storage and handling for bulk L-leucine

Amino acid powders stay in good condition when they are sealed, dry, and at room temperature. These steps keep the powder in good condition between production runs.

Keep it sealed

Close the inner liner after each use and press out the air. An open bag can pick up moisture in a humid room and start to clump.

Store at room temperature

Keep bags off the floor in a dry room, away from heat sources. One published sheet gives 15 °C to 30 °C, so follow the range on your spec sheet.

Control fine dust

Plain leucine is a light, fluffy powder that can drift when you pour it. Use local dust extraction and the protective equipment listed on the safety data sheet.

Rotate stock

Record the lot number and retest date for each bag. Send older lots to production first.

Buyer FAQ

L-leucine buyer FAQ

Quick answers to the questions procurement and quality teams ask most.

Is L-leucine the same as a BCAA blend?

No. L-leucine is one amino acid, while a BCAA blend combines leucine, isoleucine, and valine at a set ratio. This listing is L-leucine only, so you can set your own ratios.

What is instantized leucine?

Instantized leucine is L-leucine that has been agglomerated with a small amount of dispersing agent, often sunflower lecithin. It wets and mixes into liquids faster than plain crystals, and its assay sits a little under that of plain crystals.

Does L-leucine dissolve in water?

Only slowly. Plain L-leucine tends to float and clump in cold liquids, so drink mixes usually use an instantized grade. Run your own trial at your target concentration.

What specific rotation should L-leucine have?

A published USP, EP, and JP grade sheet calls for +14.9° to +17.3° at 25 °C. A result inside that range confirms the L-form.

How is L-leucine made?

L-leucine is made by fermenting plant sugars with bacteria, then purifying and crystallizing it. Protein hydrolysis is another route, so ask your supplier to name the source.

Is L-leucine powder vegan?

It depends on the route and any lecithin. Fermented leucine made from plant sugars, with sunflower lecithin or none, usually has no animal derived inputs. A vegan statement and an allergen statement may be available depending on the lot, so please confirm with us before you order.

What documents can I get with an order?

A certificate of analysis (COA) and a specification sheet ship with every order. An allergen statement and a safety data sheet may also be available, depending on the lot in inventory. Contact us to request them.

Can I get a sample before a bulk order?

You can request one by choosing sample options on the quote form. We will confirm availability, size, and timing.
