Bulk Holy Basil (Tulsi) Leaf Extract for Supplement Manufacturing
Holy basil extract is a dry powder made from the leaves of Ocimum tenuiflorum L. (syn. O. sanctum), the plant known as tulsi. It is a member of the mint family (Lamiaceae) and is usually standardized to ursolic acid, measured by HPLC. We supply it in bulk to supplement brands, contract manufacturers, and formulators.
A leaf extract with a clear species name and a measurable marker
Holy basil extract is simple to specify once species and plant type are fixed. It has an accepted botanical name, an HPLC marker, and a fingerprint test for identity. That makes lot to lot comparison easy for buyers and quality teams.
One accepted species name
The accepted name is Ocimum tenuiflorum L., and older documents use O. sanctum L. for the same plant. Sweet basil (O. basilicum) is a different species.
Green and purple types
Holy basil is traded as a green type and a purple type of the same species, often sold as Rama and Krishna tulsi. The types differ in color and aroma compounds, so name the type on the spec.
Ursolic acid by HPLC
Most extracts are standardized to ursolic acid. Listings run from 1% to 2.5%, and 2% is the grade seen most often.
Leaf or leaf with flowering tops
Extracts are made from the leaf, and some include the flowering tops. The plant part belongs on the spec, because it shifts the marker profile.
Aromatic, greenish brown powder
Listings describe a light to dark greenish brown powder with an aromatic, herbaceous odor. Color varies with plant type and harvest.
Extraction method on the spec
Powders are made by solvent extraction, then concentrated and spray dried. Water soluble grades are offered for drink mixes, so ask which solvent your lot uses.
Where formulators use holy basil extract
This extract fits measured formats where fill weight and serving size are controlled, including:
- Capsules
- Compressed tablets
- Single ingredient powders
- Multiple ingredient botanical blends
- Powdered drink mixes, using water soluble grades
- Stick packs and sachets
- Tea blends, using cut leaf
- Private label programs
Plan fill weights from the confirmed assay on each COA. A 1% and a 2.5% ursolic acid grade are not interchangeable gram for gram, so recalculate your serving math whenever you change grades.
What to check before you buy holy basil extract
Two powders sold as tulsi extract can differ in species, plant type, assay method, and solvent. Review these points together, and ask for lot documents before you approve a supplier.
Species and origin
Confirm Ocimum tenuiflorum on both the specification and the certificate of analysis (COA), along with the country of origin. O. gratissimum, a related species, turns up in some tulsi powder markets.
Green or purple type
Ask which type the lot is made from, or whether it is a mix. Purple tulsi tends to carry more methyl eugenol, which brands selling in California may want measured for Proposition 65 review.
Identity beyond one number
Ursolic acid occurs in many plants and is also sold as its own ingredient. An HPTLC fingerprint compared with a reference standard confirms that the lot is holy basil.
Assay method and basis
Ask whether ursolic acid is measured by HPLC, and whether results are on a dry or as is basis. Compare quotes only when the methods match.
Solvent, ratio, and carrier
Confirm the extraction solvent and native extract ratio. Ask whether a carrier, such as maltodextrin, is added to reach the stated grade.
Contaminant limits
Check heavy metals by ICP-MS, microbial limits by USP methods, pesticide residues, and residual solvents. Compare each limit with your own finished product specification.
Label math: If your label lists ursolic acid per serving, base the number on each lot's measured assay and your own finished product testing. A stated grade is a minimum, so the measured value on the COA is the figure to work from.
Typical specification for holy basil extract
These values reflect the common 2% ursolic acid grade. Final figures come from the specification sheet and COA for your lot. NLT means not less than, and NMT means not more than.

Storage and handling for bulk holy basil extract
Botanical extracts hold their quality when they stay sealed, dry, and out of light. Aromatic leaf extracts also keep their odor better in a closed, cool space.
Keep it sealed
Close the inner liner after each use and press out the air. Spray dried extract powders pick up moisture from the air and can cake when left open.
Store cool and dry
Keep bags off the floor in a dry room, away from heat sources. Follow the temperature range on the spec sheet.
Keep away from light
Leave the powder in its original opaque packaging. Light and heat can shift color, aroma, and assay over time.
Rotate stock
Record the lot number and retest date for each bag. Send older lots to production first.
Holy basil extract buyer FAQ
Quick answers to the questions procurement and quality teams ask most.
What is holy basil extract standardized to?
It is usually standardized to ursolic acid, measured by HPLC. Listings range from 1% to 2.5%, and 2% is the most common grade. Check the method and basis on the COA before you compare prices.
Is holy basil the same as tulsi?
Yes. Tulsi is the Hindi name for holy basil, Ocimum tenuiflorum. Older documents call the same plant O. sanctum. Sweet basil, O. basilicum, is a different species.
What is the difference between green and purple tulsi?
They are two types of the same species, often sold as Rama (green) and Krishna (purple) tulsi. They differ in leaf color and in aroma compounds, including methyl eugenol. Name the type on your spec so every lot matches.
How is holy basil identity confirmed?
Identity is confirmed with an HPTLC fingerprint compared against a reference standard. An ursolic acid result alone is not enough, because many plants contain ursolic acid.
Is holy basil extract water soluble?
Some grades are. Solubility depends on the extraction solvent, so ask for a water soluble grade if you plan a drink mix. Run a small mixing test with your other ingredients before you scale up.
What documents can I get with an order?
A certificate of analysis (COA) and a specification sheet ship with every order. An allergen statement and a safety data sheet may also be available, depending on the lot in inventory. Contact us to request them.
Can I get a sample before a bulk order?
You can request one by choosing sample options on the quote form. We will confirm availability, size, and timing.
How should I store an opened bag?
Close the liner, press out the air, and keep the bag in a cool, dry place away from light. Use the powder within the shelf life shown on the COA.
