Bulk Glycine Powder for Supplement Manufacturing
Glycine is a white crystalline powder made by chemical synthesis, for example from monochloroacetic acid and ammonia. It is the simplest amino acid and the only common one with no L or D form. Supplement grades are sold against USP or FCC (Food Chemicals Codex) monographs, with purity measured by HPLC. We supply it in bulk to supplement brands, contract manufacturers, and formulators. You can request testing documents and samples on the quote form.
A simple, water soluble amino acid for powder and capsule formulas
Glycine is one of the easiest amino acids to specify. It has one form, published compendial limits, and a mild taste. That makes lot comparison simple for buyers and quality teams.
One form only
Glycine has no chiral center, so it has no L or D form. Labels that say 'L-glycine' describe the same compound, CAS 56-40-6.
Compendial grades
Supplement grade glycine is usually sold against the USP or FCC monograph. Typical limits are NLT 98.5% assay, with chloride, sulfate, and iron each held below 0.01%.
Dense, free flowing crystals
Glycine is often sold as 20 to 80 mesh crystals with a bulk density near 0.8 g/mL. That density suits capsule filling and stick pack lines.
Mild, clean taste
Glycine has no odor and tastes mildly sweet. It blends easily into unflavored and flavored powders.
Dissolves readily
About 25 g dissolves in 100 mL of water at 25 °C, and a 1 molar solution has a pH near 6. Powders stirred into water clear quickly.
Documented trade rules
US imports of glycine from China, India, and Japan carry antidumping duty orders. The country of manufacture on the COA sets the duty, so keep that document on file.
Where formulators use glycine
Glycine fits measured formats where the serving size is controlled, including:
- Single ingredient powders
- Capsules
- Compressed tablets
- Powdered drink mixes
- Stick packs and sachets
- Multiple ingredient amino acid blends
- Protein powders and blends
- Gummies, after taste trials
- Private label programs
Glycine is used by the gram, so plan fill weights and scoop sizes from the confirmed assay. If you sell a conventional food or beverage instead of a supplement, check the US food additive rules for glycine before you set a use level.
What to check before you buy glycine
Glycine is one compound, but lots differ in grade, impurity limits, crystal size, and origin. Review these points together, and ask for lot documents before you approve a supplier.
Grade and monograph
Confirm whether the lot meets USP or FCC, and which edition. The COA should show assay, chloride, sulfate, iron, and residue on ignition against those limits.
Assay method and result
Ask whether assay is by HPLC or titration, and for the measured value. One published supplier COA showed 99.17% against an NLT 98.5% limit.
Synthesis route
Ask for the route and starting materials. One published COA named monochloroacetic acid and ammonia water. The route tells you which residues the specification should cover.
Country of manufacture
Ask for the country of manufacture on the COA. US antidumping orders cover glycine of all purity levels from China, India, and Japan, so origin also sets the import duty.
Heavy metal limits
Check lead, arsenic, cadmium, and mercury by ICP-MS. Published limits run as high as 3 ppm lead, and glycine is used by the gram, so ask for lot results as well as limits.
Crystal size and density
Ask for the mesh range and bulk density. Crystal size affects flow, blend uniformity, and how fast the powder dissolves.
Naming on labels: Use 'glycine' on your label and specification. Because glycine has no L or D form, 'L-glycine' adds nothing and can confuse a reviewer who compares your COA with the monograph.
Typical specification for glycine
These values reflect common USP grade specifications for glycine. Final figures come from the specification sheet and COA for your lot. NLT means not less than, and NMT means not more than.

Storage and handling for bulk glycine
Glycine is a stable dry powder when it stays sealed and cool. These steps keep the powder in good condition between production runs.
Keep it sealed
Close the inner liner after each use and press out the air. Crystalline powders pick up moisture from humid air and can cake when left open.
Store cool and dry
Keep bags off the floor in a dry room. Published spec sheets call for storage below 25 °C.
Keep away from heat and light
Leave the powder in its original packaging, away from heaters and direct sun. Follow the conditions on your spec sheet.
Rotate stock
Record the lot number and retest date for each bag. Send older lots to production first.
Glycine buyer FAQ
Quick answers to the questions procurement and quality teams ask most.
Is glycine the same as L-glycine?
Yes. Glycine has no chiral center, so there is no L or D form. 'L-glycine' on a label or COA describes the same compound, CAS 56-40-6.
What grade of glycine should I buy for supplements?
Most supplement brands buy glycine that meets the USP or FCC monograph. Published USP grade COAs set an assay minimum of 98.5%, with limits for chloride, sulfate, and iron. Match the grade to the standard your finished product specification cites.
How is glycine made?
Commercial glycine is made by chemical synthesis. One route named on a published COA reacts monochloroacetic acid with ammonia water. Ask your supplier to state the route on the specification sheet.
Does glycine dissolve in water?
Yes, readily. About 25 g dissolves in 100 mL of water at 25 °C, and a 1 molar solution has a pH near 6.
Is imported glycine subject to antidumping duties?
Yes, from several countries. US orders cover glycine of all purity levels from China, India, and Japan, so check the country of manufacture before you order. The country of manufacture for each lot is provided with your quote.
What documents can I get with an order?
A certificate of analysis (COA) and a specification sheet ship with every order. An allergen statement and a safety data sheet may also be available, depending on the lot in inventory. Contact us to request them.
Can I get a sample before a bulk order?
You can request one by choosing sample options on the quote form. We will confirm availability, size, and timing.
How should I store an opened bag?
Close the liner, press out the air, and keep the bag in a cool, dry place. Use the powder within the shelf life shown on the COA.
