Bulk Ginger Root Extract for Supplement Manufacturing
Ginger root extract is a dry powder made from the dried rhizome of Zingiber officinale Roscoe, the same plant sold as a kitchen spice. It is usually standardized to gingerols measured by HPLC, and 5% is a common grade. We supply it in bulk to supplement brands, contract manufacturers, and formulators. You can request testing documents and samples on the quote form.
A familiar rhizome extract with HPLC measured markers
Ginger root extract is easy to specify. Its pungent compounds have published HPLC methods and commercial reference standards. That makes lot to lot comparison simple for buyers and quality teams.
Named marker compounds
Gingerols, led by 6-gingerol, give ginger its pungent taste. Shogaols form from gingerols when the rhizome is heated or dried, and specs may report them together or apart.
Standard HPLC methods
Gingerols and shogaols are measured by HPLC under the USP monograph method or ISO 13685. Reference solutions for six of these compounds are sold for lab calibration.
Familiar market grades
The 5% gingerols grade is the most widely listed. Ratio extracts such as 10:1 are also sold for formulas that do not need an assay.
Drying shapes the profile
Hot air drying turns part of the gingerols into shogaols. The drying method and temperature therefore show up in the marker ratio on each COA.
Fine, free flowing powder
Spec sheets call for a light brown to beige powder that passes an 80 mesh screen, with a bulk density near 0.45 to 0.55 g/mL. It is partly soluble in water.
Distinct sensory profile
The extract has a hot, pungent taste and a warm, spicy aroma. Plan taste trials for drink mixes and gummies, where pungency carries through at low inclusion.
Where formulators use ginger root extract
This extract fits measured formats where fill weight and serving size are controlled, including:
- Capsules
- Compressed tablets
- Chewable tablets
- Single ingredient powders
- Multiple ingredient botanical blends
- Powdered drink mixes
- Stick packs and sachets
- Gummies, after taste and stability trials
- Private label programs
Plan fill weights from the confirmed assay on each COA. A 5% gingerols extract and a 10:1 ratio extract are not interchangeable gram for gram, so recalculate your serving math whenever you change grades.
What to check before you buy ginger root extract
Two powders sold under the same name can differ in assay method, drying process, carrier, and contaminant screening. Review these points together, and ask for lot documents before you approve a supplier.
Species and plant part
Confirm Zingiber officinale Roscoe rhizome on both the specification and the certificate of analysis (COA). Other plants in the ginger family, such as galangal, are sold as separate ingredients.
Gingerols, shogaols, or both
Ask which compounds the assay adds into its total. A figure for 6-gingerol alone, total gingerols, or gingerols plus shogaols gives a different number for the same lot.
HPLC method and standard
Ask whether the lab follows the USP monograph method, ISO 13685, or an internal method, and which reference standard it uses. A UV result for total phenolics is a different measure.
Drying and processing
Ask how the rhizome was dried and at what temperature. Heat converts gingerols to shogaols, so the drying step shapes the marker ratio on the COA.
Mycotoxins and contaminants
Ask for aflatoxin and ochratoxin A results, since EU rules set aflatoxin limits for dried ginger by name. Also check heavy metals by ICP-MS, microbial limits, pesticide residues, and residual solvents.
Solvent, carrier, and origin
Confirm the extraction solvent, native ratio, and country of harvest. Ask whether any carrier, such as maltodextrin, is added to reach the stated grade.
Label math: If your label lists gingerols per serving, base it on each lot's measured assay and your own finished product testing. Note on your spec whether the figure includes shogaols.
Typical specification for ginger root extract
These values reflect the common 5% gingerols grade. Final figures come from the specification sheet and COA for your lot. NLT means not less than, and NMT means not more than.

Storage and handling for bulk ginger extract
Ginger extract holds its spec longest when it stays sealed, dry, and out of light. These steps keep the powder in good condition between production runs.
Keep it sealed
Close the inner liner after each use and press out the air. Extract powders pick up moisture from the air and can cake when left open.
Store cool, dry, and dark
Keep bags off the floor in a dry room, away from heat sources and light. Heat drives the change from gingerols to shogaols, so follow the temperature range on the spec sheet.
Keep strong aromas apart
Ginger extract has a strong aroma that can carry to nearby materials. Store it apart from flavor neutral ingredients, and clean shared scoops and equipment.
Rotate stock
Record the lot number and retest date for each bag. Send older lots to production first.
Ginger root extract buyer FAQ
Quick answers to the questions procurement and quality teams ask most.
What is ginger root extract standardized to?
It is standardized to gingerols, measured by HPLC, and 5% is the most widely listed grade. Some specifications also report shogaols. Check which compounds are added into the total on the COA.
What is the difference between gingerols and shogaols?
Both are pungent compounds in ginger rhizome. Gingerols dominate in fresh ginger, and heat or drying turns part of them into shogaols. That is why the drying method shows up in the marker ratio.
Is ginger extract the same as ground ginger powder?
No. Ground ginger is dried, milled rhizome. Extract is made by soaking the rhizome in a solvent and drying the liquid into a concentrated powder with a stated gingerol assay.
How are gingerols measured?
HPLC is the standard method. The USP monograph method and ISO 13685 both separate gingerols and shogaols and measure them against reference standards. Ask which method your supplier's lab uses.
Which contaminant checks matter for bulk ginger?
Aflatoxins and ochratoxin A are the main extra checks for ginger, next to heavy metals, microbes, pesticides, and solvents. EU rules name dried ginger with an aflatoxin B1 limit of 5 µg/kg.
What documents can I get with an order?
A certificate of analysis (COA) and a specification sheet ship with every order. An allergen statement and a safety data sheet may also be available, depending on the lot in inventory. Contact us to request them.
Can I get a sample before a bulk order?
You can request one by choosing sample options on the quote form. We will confirm availability, size, and timing.
How should I store an opened bag?
Close the liner, press out the air, and keep the bag in a cool, dry place away from light. Use the powder within the shelf life shown on the COA.
