Bulk Cranberry Fruit Extract for Supplement Manufacturing

Cranberry extract is a dry powder made from the fruit of Vaccinium macrocarpon Aiton, the American cranberry. It is usually standardized to proanthocyanidins (PACs), and each grade is tied to the method that measured it. We supply it in bulk to supplement brands, contract manufacturers, and formulators, with lot documents for your quality team.

Why Cranberry Extract

A fruit extract specified by PAC content and method

Cranberry extract is specified by its PAC content and by the method used to measure it. When both match on every COA, you can compare lots and suppliers on the same terms.

Defined source fruit

Commercial extract comes from the fruit of Vaccinium macrocarpon, the large American cranberry. Most of the world's crop is grown in the United States and Canada.

A named marker class

Proanthocyanidins (PACs) are flavan-3-ol compounds found in cranberry fruit. Cranberry PACs include a high share of A-type links, a structural detail that identity methods look for.

Grades stated by method

Market grades include 15% PACs by UV-VIS, 25% PACs by UV, and 20% PACs by BL-DMAC. These figures come from different tests, so they cannot be ranked against each other.

Fine, spray dried powder

Most extracts are spray dried to a purplish red powder that passes an 80 mesh screen. Published spec sheets set loss on drying at 5 to 8% maximum.

Water and ethanol extraction

Standard extracts use water and ethanol, then dry the liquid, often onto maltodextrin. Spec sheets name the solvent and set a limit for residual solvent.

Methods recognized by AOAC

AOAC lists DMAC with a cranberry PAC standard as First Action Official Method 2019.06 for soluble PACs. AOAC also approved a MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry method for identity in 2019.

Formulation Uses

Where formulators use cranberry extract

This extract fits measured formats where fill weight and serving size are controlled, including:

  • Capsules
  • Compressed tablets
  • Single ingredient powders
  • Stick packs and sachets
  • Powdered drink mixes
  • Soft chews, after taste and stability trials
  • Gummies, after taste and stability trials
  • Multiple ingredient fruit extract blends
  • Private label programs

Plan fill weights from the confirmed PAC assay and method on each COA. A 15% UV grade and a 20% DMAC grade are not interchangeable, so recheck your serving math whenever you change grade, method, or supplier.

What Commercial Buyers Should Review

What to check before you buy cranberry extract

Two powders with the same PAC percentage can differ in test method, reference standard, carrier, and source. Review these points together, and ask for lot documents before you approve a supplier.

Species and plant part

Confirm Vaccinium macrocarpon Aiton fruit on both the specification and the certificate of analysis (COA). Ask for the country where the fruit was grown.

PAC method and standard

Ask which method produced the PAC figure. DMAC results also depend on the reference standard: cranberry PAC (c-PAC), as in AOAC 2019.06, or procyanidin A2, as in BL-DMAC.

Identity beyond the assay

A PAC number alone does not confirm cranberry. Ask for a fingerprint, such as HPTLC or MALDI-TOF, that can tell cranberry apart from other PAC sources like grape seed or peanut skin.

Allergen statement

Peanut skin is a commercial PAC source. Ask for an allergen statement that covers peanut, and keep it with the identity results in your supplier file.

Solvent, ratio, and carrier

Confirm the extraction solvent and native extract ratio. Ask whether maltodextrin or another carrier is added to reach the stated grade, and at what level.

Contaminant limits

Check heavy metals by ICP-MS, microbial limits by USP methods, pesticide residues, and residual solvents. Compare each limit with your own finished product specification.

Label math: If your label lists PACs per serving, name the method with the number and keep it the same from lot to lot. Base the figure on each lot's measured assay and your own finished product testing.

Specification

Typical specification for cranberry extract

These values reflect common spray dried cranberry extract grades. Final figures come from the specification sheet and COA for your lot. NLT means not less than, and NMT means not more than.

Storage & Handling

Storage and handling for bulk cranberry extract

Fruit extract powders hold their color and flow when they stay sealed, dry, and out of light. These habits help you keep quality steady across several production runs.

Keep it sealed

Close the inner liner after each use and press out the air. Fruit extract powders pick up moisture from the air and can cake when left open.

Store cool and dry

Keep bags off the floor in a dry room, away from heat sources. Follow the temperature range on the spec sheet.

Keep away from light

Leave the powder in its original opaque packaging. Light and heat can shift the red color and the assay over time.

Rotate stock

Record the lot number and retest date for each bag. Send older lots to production first.

Buyer FAQ

Cranberry extract buyer FAQ

Quick answers to the questions procurement and quality teams ask most.

What are PACs in cranberry extract?

PACs are proanthocyanidins, a group of flavan-3-ol compounds found in cranberry fruit. Cranberry PACs include a high share of A-type links. Specifications state PACs as a minimum percentage, together with the test method.

Why do PAC results differ between suppliers?

PAC results differ mainly because suppliers use different test methods. UV, Folin-Ciocalteu, and DMAC each measure PACs in their own way. DMAC values also shift with the reference standard: a cranberry PAC standard reads about 2.2 times higher than procyanidin A2 on the same samples.

What is AOAC Official Method 2019.06?

AOAC 2019.06 is a First Action Official Method for soluble PACs in cranberry foods and dietary supplements. It uses the DMAC color reaction on a 96-well plate reader with a cranberry PAC reference standard. Ask whether your supplier's PAC result follows it.

Is cranberry extract the same as cranberry fruit powder?

No. Fruit powder is dried, milled cranberry, while extract is made by steeping the fruit in water and ethanol and drying the liquid. Extracts list higher PAC grades per gram, often on a maltodextrin carrier. Compare the two only when both use the same PAC method.

Does bulk cranberry extract contain a carrier?

Many spray dried cranberry extracts do, and maltodextrin is the usual choice. Ask for the carrier name and percentage on the spec sheet so your label and supplier file stay accurate.

What documents can I get with an order?

Select testing documents on the quote form and we will send what is available for the lot.

Can I get a sample before a bulk order?

Yes. Choose sample options on the quote form and we will confirm size and timing.

How should I store an opened bag?

Close the liner, press out the air, and keep the bag in a cool, dry place away from light. Use the powder within the shelf life shown on the COA.
