Bulk Cinnamon Bark Powder for Supplement Manufacturing

Cinnamon bark powder is a ground spice made from the dried bark of Cinnamomum trees. Two groups of species are sold under the name: Ceylon cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum) and cassia (C. cassia, C. burmannii, and C. loureiroi). We supply it in bulk to supplement brands, contract manufacturers, and formulators. Name the species you need when you request a quote.

Why Cinnamon Bark Powder

A familiar spice that is easy to specify once you name the species

Cinnamon is one of the most widely traded spices, and its chemistry is well mapped. The main buying decision is species, because Ceylon and cassia differ in color, flavor, and coumarin. Once the species is on paper, lot to lot checks are straightforward.

Two species groups, one name

Ceylon cinnamon comes from Cinnamomum verum, grown mainly in Sri Lanka. Cassia comes from C. cassia, C. burmannii, or C. loureiroi, grown in China, Indonesia, and Vietnam. All are sold as cinnamon in the US.

Coumarin sets them apart

Coumarin is a natural aroma compound in cinnamon bark. Ceylon bark contains only traces, while cassia bark contains much more. That single number is the clearest way to tell the two apart on a COA.

Clear chemical markers

Coumarin, cinnamaldehyde, eugenol, and cinnamic acid give each species a distinct profile. An HPLC method that measures all four can identify Ceylon cinnamon and estimate how much cassia is in a mixed powder.

Fine, free flowing powder

Bark powders mill to a fine, dry powder that suits capsule filling, tableting, and dry blending. Ceylon is light tan and cassia is darker reddish brown, so color is a quick first check.

Distinct flavor by species

Ceylon has a mild, sweet flavor. Cassia is stronger and hotter. Pick the species that fits the taste of your powder or drink mix, then run trials in the finished format.

Established spice trade

Cinnamon moves through longstanding spice export chains, with graded quills, bark pieces, and powder. Ceylon quills are graded by diameter under names such as Alba and Continental.

Formulation Uses

Where formulators use cinnamon bark powder

This powder fits measured formats and flavor uses, including:

  • Capsules
  • Compressed tablets
  • Single ingredient powders
  • Multiple ingredient botanical blends
  • Powdered drink mixes
  • Protein powders, as a flavor ingredient
  • Stick packs and sachets
  • Private label programs

Plan fill weights and flavor levels from the confirmed species and coumarin result on each COA. Ceylon and cassia are not interchangeable gram for gram in taste or in coumarin, so recheck your formula whenever you change species.

What Commercial Buyers Should Review

What to check before you buy cinnamon bark powder

Two powders sold as cinnamon can come from different species, origins, and processing. Review these points together, and ask for lot documents before you approve a supplier.

Species on paper

Ask for the Latin species name on both the specification and the certificate of analysis (COA). 'Cinnamon' alone does not tell you whether the bark is C. verum or one of the cassia species.

Coumarin result per lot

Ask for coumarin measured by HPLC on each lot, reported in mg per gram or as a percentage. If a powder is sold as Ceylon, the coumarin figure is the simplest proof.

Identity testing

An HPLC marker profile or an NMR fingerprint confirms the species. Standard DNA tests can struggle with ground bark because the DNA is broken into short pieces, so ask which method the lab used.

Lead and chromium results

FDA has posted public alerts on lead in some retail ground cinnamon since March 2024. Ask for an ICP-MS result for lead on every lot, and add chromium to the panel.

Sterilization method

Spices are often steam sterilized before sale. Ask which method was used, whether it is stated on the COA, and how micro counts compare with your finished product limits.

Origin and raw grade

Ask for the country of origin and whether the powder was milled from quills or from smaller bark pieces. Both shape color, flavor, and price.

Species on your label: If your label says Ceylon cinnamon, file the supplier's species declaration and an HPLC coumarin result for every lot. That record backs the species name on your label. In the EU, Ceylon Cinnamon is a protected geographical indication. There the name is reserved for Sri Lankan cinnamon that meets the registered specification.

Specification

Typical specification for cinnamon bark powder

These values show what a complete cinnamon specification covers. Final figures come from the specification sheet and COA for your lot. NLT means not less than, and NMT means not more than.

Storage & Handling

Storage and handling for bulk cinnamon powder

Ground cinnamon keeps its aroma best when it stays sealed, cool, and dark. These steps keep the powder in good condition between production runs.

Keep it sealed

Close the inner liner after each use and press out the air. Ground spice loses aroma to open air and picks up moisture, which can cause caking.

Store cool and dry

Keep bags off the floor in a dry room, away from heat sources. Follow the temperature range on the spec sheet.

Keep away from light

Leave the powder in its original opaque packaging. Light and heat fade both color and aroma over time.

Keep species apart

If you stock Ceylon and cassia, label and store them separately, and clean scoops between them. A mixed bag cannot be sold as either one.

Buyer FAQ

Cinnamon bark powder buyer FAQ

Quick answers to the questions procurement and quality teams ask most.

What is the difference between Ceylon and cassia cinnamon?

They come from different Cinnamomum species. Ceylon cinnamon is C. verum, grown mainly in Sri Lanka, while cassia is C. cassia, C. burmannii, or C. loureiroi from China, Indonesia, or Vietnam. Ceylon is lighter in color, milder in flavor, and contains only traces of coumarin.

How much coumarin is in cinnamon powder?

It depends on the species. Ceylon bark contains only traces, while cassia bark contains much more, and one 2024 lab analysis measured up to 9.2 mg per gram in cassia samples. Ask for an HPLC coumarin result on each lot.

How do you confirm which species is in the powder?

An HPLC profile of coumarin, cinnamaldehyde, eugenol, and cinnamic acid identifies Ceylon cinnamon and can estimate how much cassia is in a mix. NMR fingerprinting does the same job. Short DNA markers designed for processed bark can add a second check.

Why do buyers ask for lead results on cinnamon?

Because FDA has posted public alerts on lead in some retail ground cinnamon since March 2024. A lot specific ICP-MS result for lead, and often chromium, gives your quality team a number to check against your own limit.

Is cinnamon bark powder the same as cinnamon extract?

No. Bark powder is dried bark, milled to a fine powder. Extract is made by soaking bark in water or ethanol and drying the liquid into a concentrated powder. Ask which one a quote covers, because specs and prices differ.

What documents can I get with an order?

A certificate of analysis (COA) and a specification sheet ship with every order. An allergen statement and a safety data sheet may also be available, depending on the lot in inventory. Contact us to request them.

Can I get a sample before a bulk order?

You can request one by choosing sample options on the quote form. We will confirm availability, size, and timing.

How should I store an opened bag?

Close the liner, press out the air, and keep the bag in a cool, dry place away from light. Ground cinnamon loses aroma faster than whole quills, so use the oldest lot first.
