Bulk Chlorella Powder for Supplement Manufacturing
Chlorella powder is a spray dried powder made from Chlorella, a single celled freshwater green alga, most often Chlorella vulgaris. The cell walls are cracked during processing, and the powder is specified by species, broken cell rate, protein, chlorophyll, and contaminant limits. We supply it in bulk to supplement brands, contract manufacturers, and formulators. You can request testing documents and samples on the quote form.
A green microalga you can specify by species, cell wall processing, and pigment
Buyers define chlorella by species, cell wall processing, protein, chlorophyll, and a short list of contaminant tests. Each has an established check, so lots are easy to compare.
A green alga
Chlorella is a single celled green alga. It belongs to a different group from blue green algae such as spirulina, which are cyanobacteria.
Species names on COAs
Most commercial material is sold as Chlorella vulgaris. Some suppliers still use Chlorella pyrenoidosa, a name taxonomists consider poorly defined, and some spec sheets now relabel it Chlorella sorokiniana.
Broken cell wall processing
Chlorella has a tough cell wall, so most food and supplement grades are processed to crack it before spray drying. Specs report the share of broken cells, such as 85%.
Measurable composition
Spec sheets report protein as nitrogen times 6.25, commonly 50% to 63%, and chlorophyll as a minimum, such as 1%. Use each lot's COA for any label math.
Fine powder or tablets
Chlorella is sold as a fine green powder, often 95% through 80 mesh, and as pressed tablets. The powder has a mild seaweed odor and taste.
Controlled cultivation
Chlorella is grown in open ponds or closed photobioreactors. Listings name Taiwan, China, Japan, South Korea, and India as the main origins.
Where formulators use chlorella powder
Chlorella powder fits dry formats where color, taste, and serving size are planned up front, including:
- Pressed tablets
- Capsules
- Green powder blends
- Powdered drink mixes and smoothie powders
- Protein powders
- Nutrition bars
- Stick packs and sachets
- Private label programs
Plan fill weights and tablet weights from the protein and chlorophyll results on each COA. Lots from different farms and species vary, so recheck your label values when you change suppliers.
What to check before you buy chlorella powder
Two powders sold as chlorella can differ in species, cell wall processing, chlorophyll breakdown, and contaminant results. Review these points together, and ask for lot documents before you approve a supplier.
Species and DNA identity
Confirm the species on the spec and COA. Chlorella cells look alike under a microscope, so ask whether identity is confirmed by ITS DNA barcoding.
Broken cell rate
Ask for the broken cell rate and the process used to crack the walls, such as milling or a pressure step. A stated rate, such as NLT 85%, lets you compare lots.
Pheophorbide result
Pheophorbides are chlorophyll breakdown products. Ask for a result and its method, because a spectrophotometric method counts all forms and reads 1.7 to 2.4 times higher than HPLC.
Heavy metals and PAH
Check lead, arsenic, cadmium, and mercury by ICP-MS. If you sell into the EU, also ask for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), which some chlorella specs limit.
Cultivation and origin
Ask for the country, the farm, and whether the alga grew in open ponds or closed systems. Open ponds call for a microcystin check on each lot.
Microbial limits
Check total aerobic count, yeast and mold, and pathogens by USP methods. One published sheet sets total aerobic count at NMT 100,000 cfu/g, with E. coli negative in 10 g and Salmonella negative in 25 g.
Label naming: Chlorella is a green alga, so keep the term blue green algae out of your product name and Supplement Facts panel. Use the species named on the COA.
Typical specification for chlorella powder
These values reflect a broken cell wall, spray dried powder. Final figures come from the specification sheet and COA for your lot. NLT means not less than, and NMT means not more than.

Storage and handling for bulk chlorella powder
Keep chlorella powder sealed, cool, dry, and out of light. These habits help you hold color and quality across several production runs.
Keep it sealed
Close the inner liner after each use and press out the air. Chlorella powder picks up moisture from the air and can cake when left open.
Store cool and dry
Keep bags off the floor in a cool, dry room, away from heat sources. Follow the temperature range on the spec sheet.
Keep away from light
Leave the powder in its original opaque packaging. Light breaks down chlorophyll and dulls the green color, and published guidance says this can start within weeks.
Rotate stock
Record the lot number and retest date for each bag. Send older lots to production first.
Chlorella powder buyer FAQ
Quick answers to the questions procurement and quality teams ask most.
What does broken cell wall chlorella mean?
It means the tough outer wall of each chlorella cell has been cracked during processing, usually by a mechanical or pressure step before spray drying. Specs state the share of broken cells, for example NLT 85%.
Is chlorella the same as spirulina?
No. Chlorella is a single celled green alga, while spirulina is a filamentous cyanobacterium, often called a blue green alga. They differ in species, color, cultivation, and the contaminant tests buyers ask for.
What is the difference between Chlorella vulgaris and Chlorella pyrenoidosa?
Chlorella vulgaris is a recognized species and the most common name on spec sheets. Chlorella pyrenoidosa is an older trade name that taxonomists consider poorly defined, and some suppliers now relabel that material Chlorella sorokiniana. Ask for DNA identity if the species matters to your label.
Why do chlorella specs list pheophorbides?
Pheophorbides are chlorophyll breakdown products, and a COA result lets you compare how lots were processed and handled. Japan has set limits for chlorella since 1981: 100 mg per 100 g free pheophorbide and 160 mg per 100 g total. Ask for the method too, because spectrophotometric and HPLC methods give different numbers.
Can chlorella be pressed into tablets?
Yes. Pressed tablets are a common chlorella format. Run a compression trial, since mesh, moisture, and any flow aid change tablet hardness.
What documents can I get with an order?
A certificate of analysis (COA) and a specification sheet ship with every order. An allergen statement and a safety data sheet may also be available, depending on the lot in inventory. Contact us to request them.
Can I get a sample before a bulk order?
You can request one by choosing sample options on the quote form. We will confirm availability, size, and timing.
How should I store an opened bag?
Close the liner, press out the air, and keep the bag in a cool, dry place away from light. Use the powder within the shelf life shown on the COA.
