Bulk Black Seed Extract for Supplement Manufacturing
Black seed extract is a dry powder made from the seeds of Nigella sativa L., an annual flowering plant in the buttercup family (Ranunculaceae). It is usually standardized to thymoquinone, measured by HPLC, or sold by extract ratio such as 10:1. We supply it in bulk to supplement brands, contract manufacturers, and formulators.
A seed extract with one clear marker compound
Black seed extract is easy to specify once you name the marker. Thymoquinone gives a single number to test, and HPLC methods for it are well established. The main buying decisions are grade, extraction route, and storage.
Many names, one species
Nigella sativa is sold as black seed, black cumin, kalonji, and black caraway. The Latin name on the COA is what fixes the identity.
Thymoquinone as the marker
Thymoquinone is the compound most specifications name. Extract grades of 5% and 10% are common, and higher grades up to 20% are also sold.
Ratio or marker grade
Some extracts are sold only by ratio, such as 10:1, with no thymoquinone figure. A marker grade measured by HPLC is easier to compare between suppliers.
Extraction route
Extracts are made with ethanol and water or with supercritical CO2, then dried to a powder. The route shapes color, oil content, and thymoquinone level, so ask which one you are buying.
Fine, free flowing powder
Published specs call for 95% passing an 80 mesh screen and a bulk density of 0.30 to 0.60 g/mL. Color runs from brownish yellow to dark orange.
A light sensitive marker
Thymoquinone breaks down with light and moisture. Opaque, sealed packaging and a clear retest date keep the assay close to the COA figure.
Where formulators use black seed extract
This extract fits measured formats where fill weight and serving size are controlled, including:
- Capsules
- Compressed tablets
- Single ingredient powders
- Multiple ingredient botanical blends
- Stick packs and sachets
- Softgel fills, blended into a carrier oil
- Private label programs
Plan fill weights from the confirmed thymoquinone assay on each COA. A 5% grade and a 10% grade are not interchangeable gram for gram, so recalculate your serving math whenever you change grades.
What to check before you buy black seed extract
Two powders sold as black seed extract can differ in grade, solvent, and freshness. Review these points together, and ask for lot documents before you approve a supplier.
Species and plant part
Confirm Nigella sativa L. seed on both the specification and the certificate of analysis (COA). The name black cumin is also used for other seeds, such as Bunium persicum.
Thymoquinone by HPLC
Ask for thymoquinone measured by HPLC against a reference standard, and whether the result is on a dry basis. A ratio such as 10:1 alone does not tell you the thymoquinone content.
Solvent, ratio, and carrier
Confirm the extraction route (ethanol and water, or CO2), the native extract ratio, and whether a carrier is added to reach the stated grade.
Stability and retest date
Ask for stability data and a retest date. Because thymoquinone breaks down with light, compare the assay on receipt with the COA figure.
Contaminant limits
Check heavy metals by ICP-MS, microbial limits by USP methods, residual solvents, and pesticide residues. Compare each limit with your own finished product specification.
Origin and documents
Ask for the country of origin for the seed and the extraction. Bulk listings often name India or China.
Label math: If your label lists thymoquinone per serving, base the number on each lot's measured assay and your own finished product testing. Retest older stock, since the figure can drift with light and time.
Typical specification for black seed extract
These values reflect a common 5% thymoquinone grade. Final figures come from the specification sheet and COA for your lot. NLT means not less than, and NMT means not more than.

Storage and handling for bulk black seed extract
Thymoquinone is sensitive to light and moisture, so this extract needs more care than most powders. These habits help you hold the assay across several production runs.
Keep it sealed
Close the inner liner after each use and press out the air. Extract powders pick up moisture from the air and can cake when left open.
Keep it dark
Leave the powder in its original opaque packaging and weigh it out away from direct sunlight. Light is the main cause of thymoquinone loss.
Store cool and dry
Keep bags off the floor in a dry room, away from heat sources. Follow the temperature range on the spec sheet.
Retest before use
Record the lot number and retest date for each bag. Retest thymoquinone on older lots before they go to production.
Black seed extract buyer FAQ
Quick answers to the questions procurement and quality teams ask most.
What is black seed extract standardized to?
Most graded black seed extract is standardized to thymoquinone, commonly 5% or 10%, measured by HPLC. Some extracts are sold only by ratio, such as 10:1. Check which figure your label and finished product spec rely on.
Is black seed the same as black cumin?
Yes, when the seed is Nigella sativa, which is often called black cumin. The same name is also used for Bunium persicum, a different plant, and ordinary cumin is Cuminum cyminum. The Latin name on the COA settles it.
What is the difference between black seed powder, extract, and oil?
Seed powder is whole seed, ground. Extract is a concentrated powder with a stated thymoquinone grade or ratio. Oil is a cold pressed liquid used in softgels and liquid formats. Thymoquinone levels vary widely between products, so ask for an HPLC figure whatever form you buy.
Is a 10:1 extract the same as a 5% thymoquinone extract?
No. A 10:1 ratio says about 10 kg of seed went into 1 kg of extract. It does not state how much thymoquinone the powder holds, so only an HPLC result lets you compare the two.
How should black seed extract be stored?
Keep it sealed, dry, and dark, in its original opaque packaging. Thymoquinone breaks down with light and moisture, so retest older lots before use.
Where is bulk black seed grown?
Black seed is grown in many regions, including India, the Middle East, and North and East Africa. Bulk extract listings most often name India or China. Ask for the country of origin of both the seed and the extraction on each lot. The country of origin for each lot is provided with your quote.
What documents can I get with an order?
A certificate of analysis (COA) and a specification sheet ship with every order. An allergen statement and a safety data sheet may also be available, depending on the lot in inventory. Contact us to request them.
Can I get a sample before a bulk order?
You can request one by choosing sample options on the quote form. We will confirm availability, size, and timing.
