Bulk Bilberry Fruit Extract for Supplement Manufacturing

Bilberry extract is a dry powder made from the ripe fruit of Vaccinium myrtillus L., a low wild shrub of northern and central Europe. It is standardized to anthocyanins, the purple pigments in the fruit, and the most common bulk grade is 25%. We supply it in bulk to supplement brands, contract manufacturers, and formulators.

Botanical name Vaccinium myrtillus L.
Plant part Ripe fruit
Typical grade 25% anthocyanins (HPLC)
Pack sizes 5 lb, 11 lb, 25 lb, and 55 lb
Why Bilberry Extract

A single species fruit extract with a measurable pigment profile

Bilberry extract is specified by species and by anthocyanin content. Both can be checked on every lot with an HPLC profile. That makes supplier comparison clear for buyers and quality teams.

One species, one name

The American Herbal Products Association's Herbs of Commerce gives bilberry as the standard common name for Vaccinium myrtillus L. Your specification can require that name on every COA.

Anthocyanins as the marker

Bilberry fruit carries a pattern of about 15 anthocyanins built on delphinidin, cyanidin, petunidin, peonidin, and malvidin. Grades state the total as a percentage.

A familiar 25% grade

Most bulk listings state 25%, as anthocyanins, anthocyanosides, or anthocyanidins. A 36% anthocyanins grade is also traded. Check which term and method the COA uses.

HPLC profile for identity

An HPLC fingerprint shows each anthocyanin peak and the ratios between them. That pattern confirms bilberry, which a single UV reading of total color cannot do.

Wild harvested fruit

Bilberry is wild harvested, mainly in Scandinavia and Eastern Europe. Extracts are made both in Europe and in China, so ask where the fruit was picked as well as where it was extracted.

Dark violet, water soluble powder

Standard extracts are fine dark violet to purple red powders that pass an 80 mesh screen. They dissolve in water, and the color shifts from red toward blue as pH rises.

Formulation Uses

Where formulators use bilberry extract

This extract fits measured formats where fill weight and serving size are controlled, including:

  • Capsules
  • Compressed tablets
  • Single ingredient powders
  • Multiple ingredient fruit and berry blends
  • Stick packs and sachets
  • Powdered drink mixes
  • Gummies, after color and stability trials
  • Private label programs

Plan fill weights from the measured assay on each COA. A 25% anthocyanidin grade and a 25% anthocyanin grade are not interchangeable gram for gram, so recalculate your serving math whenever you change grades or suppliers.

What Commercial Buyers Should Review

What to check before you buy bilberry extract

Powders sold under this name can differ in species, assay basis, test method, and fruit origin. Review these points together, and ask for lot documents before you approve a supplier.

Species on the COA

Confirm Vaccinium myrtillus L. fruit on the specification and the certificate of analysis (COA). Bog bilberry (V. uliginosum) and lingonberry (V. vitis-idaea) are different species.

Assay by HPLC

Ask for total anthocyanins by HPLC with the chromatogram attached. A single wavelength UV reading counts every compound that shows color at that wavelength, so it cannot show where the color came from.

Anthocyanins or anthocyanidins

Anthocyanins carry a sugar, and anthocyanidins are the same pigments without it. The same powder gives a smaller number on an anthocyanidin basis, so compare grades on one basis.

Solvent and carrier

Confirm the extraction solvent, often ethanol and water. Ask whether any carrier or excipient is added to reach the stated grade.

Contaminant limits

Check heavy metals by ICP-MS, microbial limits by USP methods, pesticide residues, and residual solvents. Compare each limit with your own finished product specification.

Fruit and extraction origin

Ask for the country where the fruit was harvested and the country of extraction. Both belong in your supplier file.

Label math: If your label lists anthocyanins per serving, base the number on each lot's HPLC result. A stated grade is a minimum, so the measured value on the COA is the figure to work from.

Specification

Typical specification for bilberry extract

These values reflect the common 25% anthocyanin grade. Final figures come from the specification sheet and COA for your lot. NLT means not less than, and NMT means not more than.

Storage & Handling

Storage and handling for bulk bilberry extract

Anthocyanins are sensitive to light, heat, and moisture. These habits help you hold color and assay across several production runs.

Keep it sealed

Close the inner liner after each use and press out the air. The powder picks up moisture from the air and can cake when left open.

Store cool

Keep bags in a cool, dry room, away from heat sources. Some makers advise cold storage at 2 to 8 °C, so follow the range on your spec sheet.

Keep away from light

Leave the powder in its original opaque packaging. Light and heat can fade the color and shift the assay over time.

Rotate stock

Record the lot number and retest date for each bag. Send older lots to production first.

Buyer FAQ

Bilberry extract buyer FAQ

Quick answers to the questions procurement and quality teams ask most.

What is bilberry extract standardized to?

Bilberry extract is standardized to anthocyanins, the purple pigments in the fruit. The most common bulk grade is 25%, stated as anthocyanins, anthocyanosides, or anthocyanidins.

What is the difference between anthocyanins and anthocyanidins?

Anthocyanins are the pigments as they occur in the fruit, with a sugar attached. Anthocyanidins are the same pigments without the sugar. A grade stated as anthocyanidins gives a smaller figure than the same powder stated as anthocyanins.

Is bilberry the same as blueberry?

No. Bilberry is Vaccinium myrtillus L., a wild European shrub, while cultivated blueberries are other Vaccinium species. Some European listings translate the German name Heidelbeere as blueberry, so check the Latin name on the COA.

Is HPLC or UV better for bilberry anthocyanins?

HPLC is the better choice for identity and assay. It measures each anthocyanin and shows the full profile. A single UV reading measures total color at one wavelength, so it cannot show where the color came from.

How do you confirm bilberry identity?

An HPLC anthocyanin profile compared with a Vaccinium myrtillus reference confirms identity. Bilberry shows a typical pattern of about 15 anthocyanins, and the peak ratios should match the reference.

What documents can I get with an order?

A certificate of analysis (COA) and a specification sheet ship with every order. An allergen statement and a safety data sheet may also be available, depending on the lot in inventory. Contact us to request them.

Can I get a sample before a bulk order?

You can request one by choosing sample options on the quote form. We will confirm availability, size, and timing.

How should I store an opened bag?

Close the liner, press out the air, and keep the bag in a cool, dry, dark place. Anthocyanins are sensitive to light and moisture, so reseal the bag right after each use.
