Bulk Betaine Anhydrous (TMG) for Supplement Manufacturing
Betaine anhydrous is a white crystalline powder of trimethylglycine (TMG), made from sugar beet molasses or by chemical synthesis. Anhydrous means it holds no water of crystallization, and it is a different ingredient from betaine HCl. We supply it in bulk to supplement brands, contract manufacturers, and formulators. You can request testing documents and samples on the quote form.
A near neutral, highly soluble powder that is easy to specify
Betaine anhydrous is one defined compound with a published CAS number and a simple HPLC assay. It dissolves readily and has a mild taste, which keeps formulation work simple.
One defined compound
Betaine is N,N,N-trimethylglycine, formula C5H11NO2, molecular weight 117.15. The anhydrous grade carries no bound water, so assay and label math are direct.
Different from betaine HCl
Betaine HCl is the hydrochloride salt, CAS 590-46-5, and is about 76% betaine by weight. It is acidic and very sour, while betaine anhydrous gives a near neutral solution.
Very high water solubility
Published COAs list solubility of about 160 g per 100 mL of water at 20°C. That suits powdered drink mixes and stick packs that need to dissolve quickly.
Mild taste
Product notes describe a mild, slightly sweet and tart taste. In blends it is easier to flavor than the very sour HCl salt.
Natural or synthetic source
Betaine is recovered from sugar beet molasses or made from trimethylamine and chloroacetic acid. Both routes give the same molecule, and suppliers can state which one they use.
Simple identity and assay
Good certificates of analysis (COAs) confirm identity by HPLC retention time against a reference standard. They also assay purity by HPLC, with published specs at NLT 98%.
Where formulators use betaine anhydrous
This powder fits measured formats where fill weight and serving size are controlled, including:
- Capsules
- Compressed tablets
- Single ingredient powders
- Sports nutrition powders
- Powdered drink mixes
- Stick packs and sachets
- Functional beverages, after stability trials
- Private label programs
Betaine anhydrous picks up moisture from the air, so plan capsule filling and blending in a room with controlled humidity. If you switch from betaine HCl, recalculate: about 1,310 mg of the HCl salt supplies 1,000 mg of betaine.
What to check before you buy betaine anhydrous
Powders sold as betaine or TMG can differ in form, source, and test method. Review these points together, and ask for lot documents before you approve a supplier.
Anhydrous, not HCl
Confirm betaine anhydrous, CAS 107-43-7, on both the specification and the COA. Betaine HCl, CAS 590-46-5, is a separate material with less betaine per gram.
Source and route
Ask whether the lot comes from sugar beet or from chemical synthesis. If it is synthetic, ask for results on the starting materials named in the route statement.
Assay method and basis
Check that purity is measured by HPLC, and whether results are on a dry or as is basis. With a loss on drying limit near 2%, the basis can move the number.
Moisture on arrival
This powder is hygroscopic. Check the loss on drying result and the bag seal on receipt, and look for caking before you release the lot.
Contaminant limits
Check heavy metals by ICP-MS and microbial limits by USP methods. Some published COAs set lead at NMT 0.3 ppm, well inside the common 3 ppm ceiling.
Origin and supplier file
Ask for the country of manufacture and the producing plant. A named site and route statement make your supplier approval faster.
Label math: If your label lists betaine or TMG per serving, work from the measured assay on each COA. One gram of a 98% anhydrous lot supplies about 980 mg of betaine. One gram of betaine HCl supplies about 763 mg.
Typical specification for betaine anhydrous
These values reflect a published COA for food and supplement grade betaine anhydrous. Final figures come from the specification sheet and COA for your lot. NLT means not less than, and NMT means not more than.

Storage and handling for bulk betaine anhydrous
Betaine anhydrous picks up moisture from the air, so it keeps best sealed, dry, and at controlled room temperature. These steps keep the powder in good condition between production runs.
Keep it sealed
Close the inner liner right after each use and press out the air. This powder is hygroscopic and can cake or turn sticky in humid air.
Store dry at room temperature
Keep bags off the floor at 15 to 25°C (59 to 77°F) in a dry room, unless your spec sheet says otherwise.
Weigh in low humidity
Weigh and blend in a low humidity area, and keep open time short. Reseal partial bags with a desiccant pack if your quality system allows it.
Rotate stock
Record the lot number and retest date for each bag. Send older lots to production first.
Betaine anhydrous buyer FAQ
Quick answers to the questions procurement and quality teams ask most.
What is the difference between betaine anhydrous and betaine HCl?
Betaine anhydrous is betaine on its own, while betaine HCl is betaine bound to hydrochloric acid. The HCl salt is about 76% betaine by weight, acidic, and very sour. Betaine anhydrous is NLT 98% betaine in published specs and gives a near neutral solution.
Is betaine anhydrous the same as TMG?
Yes. TMG stands for trimethylglycine, the chemical name of betaine. Labels and specs use betaine, betaine anhydrous, and TMG for the same compound.
Is betaine anhydrous natural or synthetic?
It can be either. Natural betaine is recovered from sugar beet molasses, and synthetic betaine is made from trimethylamine and chloroacetic acid. Ask which route your lot uses.
Is betaine anhydrous hygroscopic?
Yes. It picks up moisture from the air, so keep bags sealed and handle the powder in a dry room. Run capsule filling and tableting at controlled humidity.
How well does betaine anhydrous dissolve in water?
It dissolves very readily. Published COAs list about 160 g per 100 mL of water at 20°C, and a 10% solution has a pH of about 5 to 7.
What documents can I get with an order?
A certificate of analysis (COA) and a specification sheet ship with every order. An allergen statement and a safety data sheet may also be available, depending on the lot in inventory. Contact us to request them.
Can I get a sample before a bulk order?
You can request one by choosing sample options on the quote form. We will confirm availability, size, and timing.
How should I store an opened bag?
Close the liner, press out the air, and keep the bag in a cool, dry place. Use the powder within the shelf life shown on the COA.
