Bulk Bacopa Monnieri Extract for Supplement Manufacturing

Bacopa monnieri extract is a dry powder made from the aerial parts of Bacopa monnieri (L.) Wettst., a small creeping herb of damp ground. It is graded by bacosides, and each grade only has meaning next to the method that measured it. We supply it in bulk to supplement brands, contract manufacturers, and formulators.

Botanical name Bacopa monnieri (L.) Wettst.
Plant part Aerial parts (stems and leaves)
Typical grade NLT 20% bacosides (HPLC), with peak list
Pack sizes 5 lb, 11 lb, 25 lb, and 55 lb
Why Bacopa Monnieri Extract

An herb extract graded by bacosides and method

Bacopa extract is specified by its bacoside content and by the method used to measure it. When both match on every COA, you can compare lots and suppliers on the same terms.

Bacosides as markers

Bacosides are dammarane-type triterpenoid saponins, mostly glycosides of jujubogenin and pseudojujubogenin. More than 30 have been reported, and specifications grade the extract by a bacoside total.

Grades follow the method

One published validation measured the same extract at about 10% bacosides by a pharmacopeial HPLC method and about 50% by UV. A 20% HPLC grade and a 20% UV grade cannot be compared directly.

Pharmacopeial methods

The USP and the British Pharmacopoeia added bacopa monographs in 2011, each with an HPLC bacoside assay. The USP assay sums five named saponins, including bacoside A3 and bacopaside II.

A defined plant part

The USP defines bacopa as the dried stems and leaves. Some suppliers extract the whole plant, so the plant part belongs on every specification.

Fine powder for dry blends

Spec sheets describe a fine yellowish brown powder. Mesh specs run from NLT 90% through 40 mesh to 100% through 80 mesh, so confirm the cut that suits your capsule or tablet line.

Named extraction solvents

Suppliers extract with ethanol and water or with methanol and water. Methanol extracts carry a residual solvent limit, such as NMT 3,000 ppm under USP <467>.

Formulation Uses

Where formulators use bacopa monnieri extract

This extract fits measured formats where fill weight and serving size are controlled, including:

  • Capsules
  • Compressed tablets
  • Multiple ingredient botanical blends
  • Single ingredient powders
  • Stick packs and sachets
  • Powdered drink mixes, after taste trials
  • Private label programs

Plan fill weights from the confirmed bacoside assay and method on each COA. A 20% HPLC grade and a 50% UV grade are not interchangeable gram for gram, so recheck your serving math whenever you change grade, method, or supplier.

What Commercial Buyers Should Review

What to check before you buy bacopa monnieri extract

Two powders with the same bacoside percentage can differ in test method, plant part, solvent, and carrier. Review these points together, and ask for lot documents before you approve a supplier.

Species and common name

Confirm Bacopa monnieri (L.) Wettst. on the specification and the certificate of analysis (COA). The common name brahmi is also used for gotu kola (Centella asiatica), so order by the Latin name.

Plant part

Ask whether the extract is made from aerial parts (stems and leaves) or the whole plant. Brands that cite the USP monograph need stems and leaves.

Bacoside method and peaks

Ask whether bacosides are measured by HPLC or UV, and which peaks the HPLC total includes. UV totals run far higher than HPLC totals on the same material, so compare grades only when the methods match.

Identity fingerprint

An HPTLC or TLC fingerprint against a bacopa reference confirms identity. The USP also uses the HPLC saponin pattern, with bacoside A3 as the main peak, as an identity test.

Solvent and carrier

Confirm the extraction solvent and ask for residual solvent results under USP <467>. Ask whether maltodextrin or another carrier is added to reach the stated grade, and at what level.

Contaminant limits

Check heavy metals by ICP-MS, microbial limits by USP methods, and pesticide residues. Compare each limit with your own finished product specification.

Label math: If your label lists bacosides per serving, name the method with the number and keep it the same from lot to lot. Base the figure on each lot's measured assay and your own finished product testing.

Specification

Typical specification for bacopa monnieri extract

These values reflect common HPLC graded bacopa extracts. Final figures come from the specification sheet and COA for your lot. NLT means not less than, NMT means not more than, and ppm means parts per million.

Storage & Handling

Storage and handling for bulk bacopa extract

Herb extract powders hold their flow and assay when they stay sealed, dry, and out of light. These habits help you keep quality steady across several production runs.

Keep it sealed

Close the inner liner after each use and press out the air. Extract powders pick up moisture from the air and can cake when left open.

Store cool and dry

Keep bags off the floor in a dry room, away from heat sources. Follow the temperature range on the spec sheet.

Keep away from light

Leave the powder in its original opaque packaging. The USP asks for bacopa to be kept in well closed containers, protected from light and moisture.

Rotate stock

Record the lot number and retest date for each bag. Send older lots to production first.

Buyer FAQ

Bacopa monnieri extract buyer FAQ

Quick answers to the questions procurement and quality teams ask most.

What does 20% bacosides mean?

It means the extract contains at least 20% bacosides by the method named on the COA. The figure only has meaning with the method, because HPLC and UV give very different totals on the same material. Ask for both the grade and the method.

Why do bacoside results by UV and HPLC differ?

UV methods count a broad group of bacosides, while HPLC methods add up a set list of peaks. One published validation measured the same extract at about 10% by a pharmacopeial HPLC method and about 50% by UV. Counting every bacoside peak by HPLC gave about 30%.

Is bacopa the same as brahmi?

Brahmi is a common name for Bacopa monnieri, but the same name is also used for gotu kola (Centella asiatica). The two plants are different species. Order and specify by the Latin name to avoid confusion.

Which plant part is used for bacopa extract?

Most bacopa extracts use the aerial parts, meaning the stems and leaves. The USP defines bacopa as dried stems and leaves, while some suppliers list the whole plant. Ask for the plant part on the COA.

What documents can I get with an order?

A certificate of analysis (COA) and a specification sheet ship with every order. An allergen statement and a safety data sheet may also be available, depending on the lot in inventory. Contact us to request them.

Can I get a sample before a bulk order?

You can request one by choosing sample options on the quote form. We will confirm availability, size, and timing.

How should I store an opened bag?

Close the liner, press out the air, and keep the bag in a cool, dry place away from light. Use the powder within the shelf life shown on the COA.
