Bulk Artichoke Leaf Extract for Supplement Manufacturing
Artichoke leaf extract is a dry powder made from the leaves of globe artichoke (Cynara cardunculus L., also listed as Cynara scolymus L.). Most bulk grades are water extracts sold by cynarin, caffeoylquinic acid, or chlorogenic acid content, or by extract ratio. We supply it in bulk to supplement brands, contract manufacturers, and formulators.
A leaf extract with named markers and a published leaf standard
Artichoke leaf extract is easy to specify. Its marker compounds are well described, and the dried leaf has a European Pharmacopoeia monograph. Grades are sold by assay or by ratio, so buyers have clear numbers to compare between lots.
Named marker compounds
Artichoke leaf contains caffeoylquinic acids, such as chlorogenic acid and cynarin, plus flavonoids led by luteolin glycosides. Specifications usually set a minimum for one of these groups.
A published leaf standard
The European Pharmacopoeia sets a minimum of 0.8% chlorogenic acid and 25% water soluble extractive for dried artichoke leaf. That gives you a reference point for the starting material.
Grades by assay or ratio
Bulk grades are sold by assay, such as 5% cynarin or 2.5% to 7% chlorogenic acids, or by ratio, such as 4:1 and 10:1. Check which basis the COA uses before you compare prices.
Water extraction
Most leaf extracts are made with water, then concentrated and spray dried or vacuum dried. Many grades are dried onto maltodextrin, which should appear on the specification.
Distinct bitter taste
The leaf holds about 0.4% bitter sesquiterpene lactones, mostly cynaropicrin, and the extract tastes strongly bitter. Plan taste trials before you use it in drink mixes.
Fine, water soluble powder
Water extracts are usually yellow brown to brown powders that pass an 80 mesh screen. They mix into water, which suits stick packs and drink mixes as well as capsules.
Where formulators use artichoke leaf extract
This extract fits measured formats where fill weight and serving size are controlled, including:
- Capsules
- Compressed tablets
- Single ingredient powders
- Multiple ingredient botanical blends
- Stick packs and sachets
- Powdered drink mixes, after taste trials
- Herbal tea blends, using cut leaf or leaf powder
- Liquid concentrates, using a water soluble grade
- Private label programs
Plan fill weights from the measured assay on each COA. A 5% cynarin grade by UV and a cynarin grade by HPLC measure different things, so they are not interchangeable gram for gram.
What to check before you buy artichoke leaf extract
Extracts sold under this name can differ in plant part, marker, test method, and carrier. Review these points together, and ask for lot documents before you approve a supplier.
Plant part
Confirm leaf on both the specification and the certificate of analysis (COA). Listings may name leaf, flower head, or whole plant, and these parts differ in composition.
Marker and method
UV reads all caffeoylquinic acids together and often reports the total as cynarin. HPLC separates cynarin, chlorogenic acid, and related compounds. Ask which method the COA uses and which compound it reports.
Identity by TLC or HPTLC
A thin layer chromatography fingerprint compared with a reference leaf sample confirms species and plant part. Ask to see the chromatogram as well as the pass result.
Ratio, solvent, and carrier
Confirm the native extract ratio, the solvent, and whether it started from fresh or dried leaf. A carrier such as maltodextrin dilutes the native extract, so read the ratio and carrier share together.
Contaminant limits
Check heavy metals by ICP-MS, microbial limits by USP methods, pesticide residues, and residual solvents. Compare each limit with your own finished product specification.
Origin and harvest
Ask for the country of origin and the harvest year. Bulk listings name China, France, Italy, and the United States as sources.
Label math: If your label lists caffeoylquinic acids or cynarin per serving, base the number on each lot's measured assay and method. A stated grade is a minimum, so the measured value on the COA is the figure to work from.
Typical specification for artichoke leaf extract
These values reflect common water extracted grades. Final figures come from the specification sheet and COA for your lot. NLT means not less than, and NMT means not more than.

Storage and handling for bulk artichoke leaf extract
Water extracts pick up moisture from the air and can cake once a bag is open. These steps keep the powder in good condition between production runs.
Keep it sealed
Close the inner liner after each use and press out the air. A tight seal keeps humid air away from the powder.
Store cool and dry
Keep bags off the floor in a dry room, away from heat sources. Follow the temperature range on the spec sheet.
Keep away from light
Leave the powder in its original opaque packaging. Light and heat can shift color and assay over time.
Rotate stock
Record the lot number and retest date for each bag. Send older lots to production first.
Artichoke leaf extract buyer FAQ
Quick answers to the questions procurement and quality teams ask most.
What is artichoke leaf extract standardized to?
Most bulk grades are standardized to cynarin, total caffeoylquinic acids, or chlorogenic acid. Common grades run from 1.5% chlorogenic acid by HPLC up to 5% cynarin or 7% chlorogenic acids by UV. Some grades are sold by extract ratio instead.
What is the difference between cynarin and chlorogenic acid?
Both are caffeoylquinic acids, but chlorogenic acid carries one caffeic acid unit and cynarin carries two. Cynarin (1,3-dicaffeoylquinic acid) also forms from related compounds when plant material is processed in hot water. That is why the extraction method affects the cynarin figure.
Why do UV and HPLC give different cynarin results?
UV measures all caffeoylquinic acids together, while HPLC measures each compound on its own. A UV result reported as cynarin is a total figure, so it reads higher than an HPLC cynarin result for the same powder. Ask which method your COA uses.
Is artichoke leaf extract the same as artichoke leaf powder?
No. Leaf powder is dried, milled leaf. Extract is made by steeping the leaf in water or a water and ethanol mix. The liquid is then dried into a concentrated powder with a stated assay or ratio.
Is Cynara scolymus the same as Cynara cardunculus?
Yes, for buying purposes. Current botanical references use Cynara cardunculus L. and list Cynara scolymus L. as a synonym. Many suppliers still print C. scolymus on their COAs.
What documents can I get with an order?
A certificate of analysis (COA) and a specification sheet ship with every order. An allergen statement and a safety data sheet may also be available, depending on the lot in inventory. Contact us to request them.
Can I get a sample before a bulk order?
You can request one by choosing sample options on the quote form. We will confirm availability, size, and timing.
How should I store an opened bag?
Close the liner, press out the air, and keep the bag in a cool, dry place away from light. Use the powder within the shelf life shown on the COA.
